Fig. 10 zeigt eine ortsfeste Bauart des Apparates.
Fig. 17 stellt eine besonders vorteilhafte Stiftform dar.
Method and apparatus for welding metal pins and the like to metal bodies by means of an electric arc.
The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for welding metal pins and the like to metal bodies, such as forged or cast plates, rods, blocks, by means of an electric arc.
The method according to the invention consists in that the pin moves in the direction of the arc formed between it and the metal body against the body and pressed against it and the circuit of the welding current passing through the pin and the body is closed until the welding is complete kept really
According to a preferred exercise of the method, the pin is removed from this body after the welding circuit through it and the metal body has been closed, e.g. B. by the electromagnetic effect of a solenoid to form an arc between it and the metal body, which is then maintained for a certain time, whereupon the pin before the interruption of the welding circuit in the direction of the arc against the metal li body moves and by using me chanical means, such as. B. spring pressure, air pressure, water pressure or electromagnetic means is pressed against the metal body.
The apparatus for carrying out the method is characterized by a welding current circuit going through the pin and the metal body, means for closing and opening this welding circuit, means for holding the pin, means for removing the pin from the metal body, means for pressing the Pen on the metal body and a device for automatic control of the sequence of work processes,
Some embodiments of such an apparatus are shown in the accompanying drawings. For the sake of simplicity, the metal body to which the pin is to be welded is referred to below as the plate.

Fig. 10 is an elevational view of a fixed or non-portable embodiment of the apparatus; 11 and 12 show the solenoid used in this embodiment for arcing and the circuit used: and in the vertical section;
Fig. 16 shows the solenoid operated valve of the embodiment of Figs. 14 and 15 in elevation, partly in section, and Fig. 17 is a perspective view of an advantageous form of the pins used in practicing the invention. l (Fig. 1) is the plate to which the pin 2 is to be welded. 3 is a solenoid, the core 4 of which can serve as a holder for the pin 2, in that either the core end is designed as a slotted conical clamping chuck or such a chuck is removably attached to it.
The solenoid 3 carrying the pin 2 is held in its position opposite the plate 1 by holding pot magnets 5 and 6 which are arranged on either side of the solenoid and the windings of which are excited by any suitable source of electricity.
7 generally indicates an automatic regulating device which is described in more detail below. This device consists of a thumb shaft 8, four thumbs 9, 10, 11 and 12 and four pole levers or F; ngern 13, 14, 15 and 16, which come into contact with the mentioned thumbs as the shaft 8 rotates. The shaft 8 can be set in rotation by a clockwork, as described below with reference to Figures 6, 7 and 8, or it can be driven electrically.
The rotation of the Dau menwelle is usually prevented by a brake 17 (Fig. 6 and 8), which is released when a solenoid 18 (Fig. 1, 6, 7 and 8) is excited.
19 and 20 are the main positive and negative leads. 21 is a double-pole switch for switching on the apparatus in the main circuit. Of course, the polarity of the lines 19 and 20 can be changed and, if alternating current is used, no specific polarity can be assumed for the main apparatus conductors 22 and 23. In the conductor 23, which is connected to the pen holder, a contact device 24 moved by a solenoid 25 and, between this and the pen holder, a choke coil 26 and a variable resistor 27 are connected in series, while the conductor 22 is connected directly to the plate 1.
In Fig. 1, the main supply lines and the welding circuit to distinguish them from the other circuits of the apparatus are drawn in thick black lines. The choke coil 26 has the purpose of dampening violent current surges.
By means of the variable resistor 27, the value of the main current can be regulated and different sizes and materials of the pen and the plate and other variable factors, e.g. B. the temperature can be adjusted.
The conductors leading to the solenoid 3, the holding pot magnets 5 and 6 and the main regulating switch 28 shown as a contact bulb are combined into a common flexible cable 29 which is provided with a plug 30; on this sit four contact plugs 31,32,33 and 34, which can be inserted into matching contact sleeves 35,36,37 and 38; the latter are attached to a box (not shown) which contains the regulating device 7. The variable resistor 27, the choke coil 26, the contact device 24 and the solenoid 25 moving them can also be accommodated in this box.
At the most Ka a contact terminal 39 for closing the circuit through the solenoid 25 is also attached. 40, 41 and 42 are lamp resistors, and 43 is an induction-free resistor. The lamp 40 lights up when the push-button switch 28 is actuated and thereby shows that it remains switched on during the welding via the regulating device 7, that it is in operation.
The conductors which correspond to the contact sleeves 35,36,37 and 38 and lead from the plugs 31,32,33 and 34 to the solenoid 3, the holding pot magnets 5 and 6 and the main switch 28 are provided with the same reference numerals as Contact sleeves themselves. In Fig. 1, a part of the cable 29 is shown in dotted lines under the plug 30 carrying the plugs 31,32,33 and 34, and the arrangement and connection of the conductors with the plugs and the latter with the sleeves 35,36, 37 and 38 to show clearly. The circuit through the stop pot magnets 5 and 6 can be closed by means of a switch 44, which is shown as a tumbler switch, but can also have any other type.
The circuits through the main switch 28 and the pot magnets 5 and 6 are branched off from the conductor 35 at 45, the circuit through the solenoid coil 3 also from the conductor 35 at 46.
The conductor 35 is electrically connected to the thumb shaft 8 through the contact sleeve 35 and a wire 47, the conductor 36 through the sleeve 36 and a wire 48 with the fingers 13 and 14, and the conductor 37 through the
Sleeve 37 and a wire 49 with your finger
15 and through the induction-free resistor
43 and a wire 49 ′ with the contact device 24 and the negative conductor 23.
The conductor 38 is through the sleeve 38, the
Wire 50, lamps 41 and 42 and the
Wire 51 to the common negative
Contact terminal 52 connected and this through the wire 53 to the negative conductor 23.
The circuit through which the Kontaktvor device 24 moving solenoid 25 is through the branched off from the positive conductor 22 wire 54, the sleeve 35, the wire 47, the thumb shaft 8, the thumb 12, the finger 16 and the wire 55 with the terminal 39 and from there connected to the conductor 23 by the wire 56. The circuit through the solenoid 18 releasing the brake is through the wire 54 branching off from the conductor 22, the sleeve 35, the wire 47, the thumb shaft 8, the thumb 9 (or 10), the contact finger 13 (or 14), the wire 57 , brake release solenoid 18, wire 58, lamp 40, wire 59,
the common negative terminal 52 and thence connected to the negative conductor 23 by the wire 53. The circuit through the push button switch 28 bridges the gap between the thumbs 9 and 10 and the contact fingers 1 and 14 in the circuit of the brake release solenoid 18, which gap is open when the regulating device is inactive or idle.
The circuit through the push button switch 28 is from the conductor 22 through the wire 54, the sleeve 35, the plug 31, the wire 35 via point 45, the push button clip 28, the wire 36, the plug 32, the sleeve 36, the wire 48, the wire 57, the brake release solenoid 18, the wire 58, the lamp 40, the wire 59, the negative contact terminal 5) and from there connected by the wire 53 to the negative apparatus conductor 23.
The pen holder solenoid 3 (Fig.2,3,4 and 5) and the holding pot magnets 5 and 6 are attached to a common support frame 60; A flat iron bracket 61 is attached to this, which is provided with a handle 62 made of hard rubber, fiber or other insulating material. The pen holder solenoid and the holding pot magnets thus form a single whole that can be easily carried from place to place. The pen holder solenoid has a lid 63 (Fig.
5), which is attached to the support frame 60 by angles 64 and 65. This cover has an eye 66 in the middle, onto which a copper tube 67 is screwed; this is surrounded by a form sleeve 68 on which the coil 69 is wound; Insulating material 70 lies between the sleeve 68 and the coil 69. The sleeve 68 is held in its position by a washer 71 which is screwed onto the free or outer end of the copper tube 67. A pin 72, which carries the lenoid core 4, engages through the eye 66. The coil 69 is surrounded by a steel housing 73 which is fastened to the support frame 60 by screws 74 (FIGS. 3 and 4).
On the upper or rear end of the pin 72 sits a contact pin 75 which is provided with a collar 76 and is pressed with this by a spring 77 against the solenoid cover 63; the spring 77 is located in a capsule 78 which sits loosely in a locking sleeve 79. A ball bearing 80 may be mounted between the opposing surfaces of the capsule 78 and the sleeve 79. A clamp 81 is attached to the upper or rear end of the contact pin 75 which protrudes from the locking sleeve 79. There is a bow on the socket 79! 82 which carries a device for setting the correct length of the arc.
This adjusting device consists of a hollow screw plug 83 in which a helical spring 84 sits, which is held in place by a screw plug 86. The inner end of this spring presses on a displaceable piston 85 which is dimensioned so that the part protruding from the screw plug 83 determines its correct length when the arc is formed. By turning the screw plug 83 in such a way that the piston 85 just comes into contact with the contact pin 75 when the apparatus is put on for welding, the correct length of the arc can be set.
The outer end of the solenoid core 4 is equipped with a slotted conical clamping chuck for clamping the pin 2; the parts of this lining are denoted by 87 and 88. An iron or steel disk 89 is inserted between this lining and the core 4 in order to reduce the magnetic scattering from the core 4 after the arc. In Fig. 13, another embodiment of the pen holder is shown.
In this embodiment, the outer end of the core 4 is provided with an axial bolting 90 and a transverse bore 91.
In the latter sits a pierced pin 92, which engages with a square 93 in a suitable hole 94 in the wall of the core 4 and at the end of the bore 91, and by means of which one can clamp the pin 2 in the axial bore.
The welding current can be fed to the clamp 81; or the cable carrying the welding current can be connected to the disk 89 in a suitable manner.
In the former, central type of feed, the pin 72 is made of brass, and it is therefore superfluous to attach a special tube, such as 89 '(FIG. 5) between the core 4 of the solenoid 3 and the adjacent housing wall; rather, the core 4 can be displaceable directly in the copper tube 67, as is shown in FIG. 11. If, on the other hand, the welding current is supplied through the disk 89, the pin 72 and the tube 89 ′ consist of a suitable insulating material, so that only the disk 89, the core 4 and the pin holder carry the welding current.
Between the inner conical end of the core 4 and the correspondingly recessed eye 66 of the solenoid cover 63 there is sufficient leeway for the movement of the core during the setting and the formation of the arc.
The holding pot magnets 5 and 6 are carried by the support frame 60 by means of screws 90 'and 91'; these are adjustable in insulating sleeves 92 ′ and 93 ′, which are seated in bores in the frame 60. Knurled nuts 94 'and 95 and wing nuts 96 and 97 are used for adjustment. At the lower end of the screws 90' and 91 ', covers 98 and 99 (FIG. 5) are attached, which are screwed into housings 100 and 101 made of soft steel.
These housings are open at the lower end and surround the coils 102 and 103 of the pot magnets 5 and 6. Each of these coils is wound onto a molded sleeve 104 or 105 and separated from this by an insulating intermediate layer 106 or 107. The lids carry the cores 108 and 109, which are part of a piece with them and which protrude through the shaped sleeves and above their outer flanges. Mcssing disks 110 and 111 are attached to these cores and have the form sleeves with the coils in their position.
The lids 98 and 99 of the pot magnets are connected to a brass frame 112 which is guided on the housing 73 3 of the solenoid 3 by means of an insulating bush 113 so that it can be moved up and down. Clamping nuts 114 and 115 sit on the screws 90 ′ and 91 ′. The coils of the magnets 5 and 6 and those of the solenoid 3 are preferably wound and connected in such a way that the same polarity is obtained at the core ends opposite the lath 1.
The tumbler switch 44 is seated on a bracket 116 which extends transversely over the bracket 61 fastened to the support frame 60 and is fastened to its legs. The flexible cable 23, which is connected to the clamp 81, and the conductors 35, 36, 37 and 38, which are combined to form the flexible cable 29, pass between the bracket 118 which carries them and the clamp 117 sitting thereon; the bracket 118 is also attached to the bracket 61. The length of the cable 23 located between the clamp 117 and the clamp 81 is kept so long that it allows the core 4 of the solenoid 3 to move as required.
The four conductors 35, 36, 37 and 38 are separated from one another at the end of the common cable 29 and are then connected to the associated terminals. 119 and 120 (FIG. 3) are insulating fin guide bushes for the wires leading to the coils 102 and 103 of the pot magnets 5 and 6, and 121 and 122 are those for the wires leading to the coil 69 of the solenoid 3. In addition to the bracket 118 and the clamp 117 or instead of them, clamps 123 and 12-1 can be arranged for holding the cables 23 and 29, which are attached to the bracket 61 (FIG. 3).
The regulating device 7, by means of which the entire sequence of operations is regulated from the remote control switch 28, is shown in FIGS. 6, 7 and 8.
As already mentioned, this device has four thumbs 9, 10, 11 and 12. The combined thumbs 9 and 10 each have a gap 125 or 126, and all thumbs can be adjusted on the shaft 8 in the axial and in the circumferential direction. By mutual adjustment of the two thumbs 9 and 10 in the circumferential direction, the time between the action of the thumb 9 and that of the thumb 10 can be changed.
At the end of a turn, the thumb 9 opens the circuit of the brake release solenoid 18, while the thumb 10 closes this circuit at the beginning of the same, and this remains closed regardless of the remote control switch 28 connected in parallel with the thumb The latter's circuit can be opened when the thumbs 9 and 10 are closed. without interrupting the rotation of the shaft 8. The thumb 11 is used to short-circuit the coil of the solenoid 3, and the thumb 12.
which is involute regulates the closing and opening of the main current contact device 24, thus also that of the welding circuit and consequently the welding current itself. before the thumb 12 leaves the contact finger 16. The final setting of the regulating device occurs by longitudinally displacing the contact finger 16.
The shaft 8 is mounted in and between sinkers 127 and 128 and is set in rotation by a suitable clock mechanism.
This consists of a drum 129 in which there is a spiral spring (not shown) and a number of spur gears 130, 131, 132, 133, 134, 135, 136, 137, the shafts of which are also mounted in the plates 127 and 128 . A bracket 140, which has horizontal arms 141 and 142, carries a vertical shaft 143 between them. A worm 144 sits on this and engages in a tendon (or spur) wheel 138 on the shaft of wheel 137, as well as a Ring 146. The core 147 of the brake release solenoid 18 is connected by an angle lever 148 and a lencer 149 to one end of a flat spring 150, the free end of which rests on the ring 146 and thus acts together with it as a brake.
A brake wing 151 is also attached to the vertical shaft 143 by means of a spring clip or some other suitable means.
The mode of action is as follows:
It is assumed that the magnets 5 and 6 and the solenoid 3 are brought into the desired position relative to the plate 1 to which the pin 2 is to be welded.
By actuating the switch 44, the circuit is then switched from the + pole 22 via the wire 54, 35, the coils of the magnets 6 and 5, the switch 44, the wire 38, the plug 3 ', the contact sleeve 38, the wire 50 , the lamps 42 and 41, the wire 51, the negative pole terminal 52, the wire 53 and the negative main lead 23 are closed. As a result, the coils of the magnets 5 and 6 are excited so that they hold the pen holder with its solenoid in the desired position relative to the plate 1.
The switch 28 is then actuated, which closes the circuit through the brake release solenoid 18 so that it releases the brake spring 150 from the brake ring 146; as a result, the shaft 8 of the regulating device 7 starts rotating. During this rotation, the thumbs 9 and 10 come into contact with the contact fingers 13 and 14, which are usually (i.e. when the regulating device is inactive) above the gaps in the thumbs, whereby the circuit through the push-button switch 28 is bypassed.
The circuit through the brake release solenoid 18 is thus kept closed independently of that of the switch 28, which switch can therefore be opened. without making said solenoid deenergized.
As the shaft 8 continues to rotate, the thumb 12 then comes into contact with the finger 16. As a result, the solenoid 25 is energized and thereby moves the contact device 24, which closes the welding circuit, so that the current passes through the plate 1 and the pin 2.
At the same time, the solenoid 3 is also excited, which consequently pulls the pin 2 back against the action of the spring 77 and brings it out of contact with the plate 1, the arc being created.
As the shaft 8 continues to rotate, the thumb 11 touches the finger 15, whereby the solenoid 3 is short-circuited or shunted and thus made practically de-energized. The immediate consequence of this is that the spring 77 moves the pin 2 on the path or in the direction of the arc, preferably at right angles to the plate 1, against it, with sufficient pressure to cause the pin to be welded to the plate . In this way the arc is maintained on the path or in the direction of pin movement with shortening until actual contact between the pin and the plate. As the shaft 8 continues to rotate, the thumb 12 comes out of contact with the finger 16, as a result of which the solenoid 25 is de-energized or the circuit through it is opened.
As a result, the contact device 24 and through this the welding circuit is also opened.
The thumb 11 comes out of contact with the finger 15 as the shaft 8 continues to rotate, so that the short circuit of the solenoid 3 is canceled. The shaft 8 continues to rotate until the gaps in the thumbs 9 and 10 face the ends of the associated contact fingers 13 and 14, whereby the circuit through the brake release solenoid 18 is opened. As a result, the brake 146, 150 of the regulating device comes into action, so that the latter comes to a standstill. This series of operations can be repeated as often as desired by simply pressing the push button switch 28.
In the embodiment according to FIG. 9, two welding devices D and E are provided which can be operated by different workers, and each of these two devices can be activated by actuating the associated pushbutton switch 28 or 28 'while the sequence of operations is in progress a suitable device similar to that described with reference to Figs. 1, 6, 7 and 8 is controlled. The design of the device and the circuit according to FIG. 9 are such that simultaneous operation of the two welding devices is excluded.
Of course, however, the regulating device and the electrical connections can also be set up in such a way that the two apparatuses can operate simultaneously or one after the other as required.
In Fig. 9, the reference numerals of the parts and connections of the apparatus E corresponding to the parts and connections of the welding apparatus D are provided with indexes in order to clearly differentiate the two apparatuses and their connections. In addition to the second apparatus and the parts shown in FIG. T, the following are required for the use of two such welding apparatuses: A contact device 24 ', a solenoid 25' for their movement, a negative main apparatus conductor 23 ', a brake release solenoid 18', two changeover switches 152 and 152 'and a thumb 11'.
The regulating device 7, the solenoids 18,18 ', 25,25', the choke coil 26, the variable resistor 27, and the contact sleeves 35,36,37, 38 and 35 ', 36', 37 ', 38' are preferred housed in a portable box; the flexible cables 29 and 29 'are provided with plugs 30 and 30' for connection to the associated contact sleeves, which carry the contact plugs 31, 32, 33, 34 and 31 ', 32', 33 ', 34'. Since the design of the individual parts of the apparatus is the same as that of the corresponding parts of the apparatus according to FIG. 1, it is sufficient to describe the operation of the welding apparatus E.
The circuits of the apparatus D are clearly shown and the operation thereof is the same as that of the apparatus of FIG.
The welding circuit of the apparatus E is as follows: Positive main lead 19, switch 21, positive main lead 22, plate 1, pin 2 ', lead 23', contact device 24 ', variable resistor 27, choke coil 26, negative main lead 23, switch 21, negative main 20. The shunt solenoid circuit:
Positive main lead 19, switch 21, conductor 22, wire 54, wire 153, sleeve 37 ', tip 33', wire 37 'in cable 29', wire 46 ', solenoid 3', wire 38 ', plug 34', sleeve 38 ', Wire 154', non-inductive resistor 43 ', wire 155', auxiliary contacts 156 'and 157' of the contact device 24 ', wire 158, negative conductor 23 and negative main lead 20.
When the pushbutton switch 28 'is actuated, the circuit of the brake release solenoid 18' is closed as follows: wire 37 ', switch 28', plug 32 ', sleeve 36', wire 159 ', wire 160', contacts 161 'and 162 'of toggle switch 152, brake release solenoid 18', wire 164, lamp 165, wire 158, negative conductor 23.
The solenoid 18 ′ is therefore excited and the brake 146, 150 of the regulating device is released, so that the shaft 8 starts rotating. The excitation of the solenoid 18 'results in the opening of the circuit via the contacts 161 and 162 and the core of this solenoid and the closure of the one via the contacts 168 and 169. The opening of the contacts 161 and 162 also effects that of the circuit through the solenoid 8, and the closure of the contacts 168 and 169 that of the gap in the circuit of the solenoid 25 ', so that it can be excited by the regulating device 7 at a suitable time .
The latter can be connected to the solenoids 25 and 25 'of the contact devices 24 and 24' by the switches 52 and 152 '.
As soon as the brake of the regulating device is released, the shaft 8 starts to rotate, the thumbs 9 and 10 coming into contact with the fingers 13 and 14, which usually lie over the gaps between these thumbs. The circuit via the push-button switch 28 'is bridged by this and the latter is maintained via the brake release solenoid 18' and the thumb 10 independently of the former. When the finger 16 touches the duration 12, the solenoid 25 'is excited and the contact device 24' is closed by it.
As a result, the main or welding circuit is closed via the plate 1 and the pin 2 'and the solenoid 3' is excited, so that it moves the pin out of contact with the plate against the spring action and causes the arc to be formed.
As the thumb shaft 8 continues to rotate, the thumb 11 'touches the finger 15', whereby the solenoid 3 'is short-circuited or placed in a side-by-side manner and so de-energized so that the spring hits the pin on the way or in the direction of the arc of the liclite , preferably at right angles to the plate with sufficient pressure moved against it, illll cause the welding of the pin to the plate. The arc is maintained in the direction of movement of the pin while shortening it until the pin actually touches the plate.
As the shaft 8 continues to rotate, the thumb 12 moves out of contact with the finger 16, as a result of which the circuit of the solenoid '5' is opened and this is thus rendered unexcited. As a result, the contact device 24 'will open and interrupt the main or welding circuit. The thumb 11 ′ then leaves the finger 15 ′, whereby the short circuit of the solenoid 3 ′ is canceled. The thumb shaft 8 continues to rotate until the gaps in the thumbs 9 and 10 meet the ends of the fingers 13 and 14. As a result, the circuit of the brake release solenoid 18 ′ is opened and the brake of the regulating device 7 is applied, so that the rotation of the shaft 8 stops.
At the same time, the contacts 168 and 169 are opened and the contacts 161 and 162 are closed by the core of the solenoid 18 '. The lamp 165 lights up occasionally and thereby indicates whether current is flowing through the solenoids 18 or r 18 '.
Fig. 10 shows a fixed type of the apparatus. The solenoid 3 is carried by the spindle of a pillar drill. 170 is the column, 171 the spindle and 172 the table or support for the workpiece 173 to which the pin 2 is to be welded. In this design, the holding pot magnets 5 and 6 of the design described above are omitted. The solenoid 3 is attached to the spindle 171, which can be moved up and down, by means of a clamp 174 which is fastened by screws 175 to a lateral projection 176 of the spindle. The table 172 is adjustable on the column 170 and can be locked in the desired position by means of a clamping sleeve with a handle 177.
The spindle 171 is provided with a gear which can be moved by means of a handwheel 178 in order to raise or lower the spindle. In order to bring about a rapid decrease in the spindle, a hand lever 181 is also provided, which can be moved after the gear parts 179 and 180 are moved out.
As shown in FIG. 10, the stamping device is housed in a portable box 182 from which the necessary flexible cables 183 and 184 filter to the solenoid. These cables are carried by a clamping device 185 attached to the Column 170 is attached. The internal arrangement of the solenoid 3 is the same as that described with reference to Figs. 2 to 5, and further description thereof is unnecessary. The circuit of the solenoid 3 for the type of FIG. 10 is shown in FIG.
It has been shown that with certain sizes and types of pins, plates and the like, a strong mechanical pressure is required to place the pin on the plate in order to achieve a good weld. For this purpose, for example, the pressing device shown in FIGS. 14, 15 and 16, operated with a suitable pressure medium, can be used instead of the electromechanical one described above.
In this device, the chuck for the pin 2 is attached to the end of a rod 186; this carries a piston 187 which moves in a cylinder 188 under the action of compressed air.
The latter can be portable or provided with means, for example a clamp 189, 190, for fastening to a stationary object. The cylinder 188 is connected to a valve housing 193 by suitably bent tubes 191 and 192; In this there are two poppet valves 194 and 195, which sit on a common rod 196 and can be moved up and down by a solenoid of the type described below.
The cylinder 188 has openings 198 and 199 through which the pressure air is supplied to the two sides of the piston 187.
The used Luit flows through the same openings, the tubes 191 and 192 and the two ends of the rod 196 into the open. The latter is high! and through holes 200 and 201 at both ends which, at the appropriate time, establish communication between the tubes 191 and 192 and the outside through the bores 202 and 203 in the ends of the rod 196. The latter is moved with the valves 194 and 195 by a solenoid 204 (Fig. 16), the core 205 of which is connected to the rod 196 by a lever mechanism 206,207,208.
The lever 207 is mounted on an arm 209. the one at the valve iuse 193 is attached. 209 'is the contact sleeve for connecting the main power cable to the pen holder, which in this case is attached to the rod 186.
The solenoid 204 is carried by the valve housing 193, to which it is attached by clamps 210 and 211, and the solenoid core 205 is under the action of a spring 212.197 is a two-way valve, the channel 213 of which alternates with the air inlet channel 214 or through the channel 215 can be connected to the open air. The air supply line, which preferably consists of a flexible tube, is connected to the duct 214, or conversely, the duct 215 can be connected to the air supply line and the duct 214 to the open air.
The rod 186 is adjusted by means of the drilling spindle 171 (FIG. 10), and the length of the arc is regulated by means of the screw plug 83 (FIG. 15), as described in more detail with reference to FIGS. 2 to 5.
The solenoid 204 (FIG. 16) is not energized when its core 205 is in the position shown, so that the rod 196 is also in the position shown. The piston 187 is therefore pressed in the direction against the plate by the compressed air, so that the pin 2 comes into contact with the plate.
The welding circuit through the pin and the plate is completed by inserting the cable into the contact sleeve 209 ', and at the same time the solenoid 204 is energized, preferably by an independent power source. The consequence of this is that the rod 196 is moved by the solenoid sensors 205 by means of the lever mechanism 206, 207, 208, the valve 194 closing and the valve 195 opening. In the meantime, compressed air flows through the cock 197, the valve 195 and the tube 192 to the bottom of the piston 187. At the same time, air escapes on the top of the piston through the tube 191, the openings 200 and the bore 202 to the outside.
The piston 187 together with the rod 186 and the pin 2 are thus moved away from the plate and the arc is thereby formed.
When the solenoid 204 is de-energized or short-circuited, the rod 196 is moved upwards by the action of the spring 212, so that compressed air flows in over the piston 187. Since the pressure on the hunter side of the piston is then eliminated, the pin is moved against the plate in the direction of the arc and preferably at right angles to the plate, with sufficient pressure to weld the pin to the plate. The arc on the way or in the direction of the pin movement is maintained while shortening until the pin actually comes into contact with the plate.
The main or welding circuit is then opened and the series of work processes is repeated as often as desired. The movement of the valve 197, the excitation and de-excitation of the solenoid 204 and the opening and closing of the main or welding circuit can be brought about by hand or by an automatic device.
This valve can be controlled automatically by adding a suitable thumb and an associated contact finger to the regulating device and wires for connecting it to the solenoid that moves the valve 97.
17 shows a particularly advantageous pin shape. The pin 2 here has a round collar 216 at the end to be welded and a cylindrical pin 217 projecting over it, in order to facilitate the formation and centering of the arc. At the same time, the pin 217 is preferably somewhat pointed or rounded. The welding end of the pin or its collar 216 or both can be coated with a suitable welding agent.
If desired, a one-piece or triangular frame composed of rails can be provided when the device is designed with holding magnets, which carries one or more coils on a protruding pin at each corner and the pin holder solenoid at a suitable point. Said pins are preferably made of soft iron; but they can also partly consist of brass or other non-magnetic material.
The coils can each be wound on one of the pins or on a suitable part of the triangular frame, the latter of which in both types can consist entirely of magnetic material or partly of non-magnetic and partly of magnetic material. This design offers three support points for regular or irregular surfaces and allows easy adjustment of the pen holder, so that welding the pen is made easier in places that are difficult to access.
Of course, instead of the choke coil 26 and the resistor 27, other accessories are required when operating the apparatus with alternating current. However, it is unnecessary to replace these two parts if the power source of the main or welding circuit is a suitable one. Converter is: in some cases, for example when the alternating current is taken from ordinary power lines, a special converter or resistor, preferably one with an adjustable current limit, is used.
The apparatus can be used with pens and plates of any size, provided that suitable precautions are taken to set the current, time and polarity (in the case of direct current operation).
