alium bestellt.
Process for carrying out the electrolysis of molten electrolytes. In the electrolysis of molten electrolytes, difficulties have been encountered to a greater extent than in the electrolysis of aqueous solutions in keeping the cathode and anode products separated from one another in such a way that they do not react with one another again and thereby reduce the current yield.
The precipitated products usually have a strong tendency to dissolve in the electrolyte and to diffuse towards the other electrode, where a more or less strong depolarization is then obtained. plan has tried in various ways to avoid or at least reduce this diffusion.
The bell method. Porous Diapliragnieii, the use of metallic Zwischenelek electrodes, etc. have been brought into use, but it has not yet succeeded. the difficulties: to lift in a satisfactory way.
The bell process leads to voltage losses because of the long current path; diffusion is also not prevented. _A.ucli the slides used up to now are not able to effectively prevent diffusion because of their porosity. It was therefore important to find a diaphragm that would not allow diffusion.
which nevertheless does not prevent the passage of current and electrolysis. According to the present method, electrolytically conductive, solid bodies are now used as diaphragms in the electrolysis of molten electrolytes. Such bodies can be on a layer of glass, made of vitreous, ceramic or other,
at higher temperatures electrolytically conductive class of älim- liclien pliVsikaliscli-cliemisclien egg properties exist. which act as an intermediate electrolyte and, depending on the temperature used during the electrolysis, are in solid, viscous or liquid form.
Beishicl <I> 1: </I> When liquid sodium chloride is to be electrolyzed. a ctemiscli of sodium chloride and potassium chloride is used, which is composed of -1 -1 parts of sodium chloride, 56 parts of chloride:
alium ordered. The electrolysis of the mixture is carried out using the apparatus illustrated in the accompanying drawing. In a fire-resistant vessel A, which is made of iron, coal or some other material that cannot be attacked by the melt, there is a second vessel:
eat B an - porchiet, which is ordered as a diaphragm and made of soda-las. The cathode C is attached to this vessel, while the anode D consists of a hollow carbon core which encloses the diaphragm.
Both the catholyte and the anolyte consist of a mixture of sodium chloride and potassium chloride, which melts at about 66 (-), while the electrolyte at about 700 ° C and with 7 to 10 volts is carried out.
The diapbra;: marnateriai acts as an intermediate electro- Ivt. in that the sodium ions take over the conduction of electricity.
<I> Example 2: </I> The same arrangement as in the first example can be used to represent magnesium. A melt is then used in the anode compartment, consisting of sodium chloride and potassium chloride, in a molecular ratio and in the cathode compartment a melt consisting of a molecular odor full of magnesium chloride, sodium chloride and potassium chloride,
with about 10% fluorine-aluminum, and electrolyzed at temperatures of about 700 to 750 ° C with a voltage of 7 to 10 volts.
Example <I> 3 </I> To prepare zinc by electrolysis of zinc chloride, one proceeds in such a way that the anode is used in the inner space and the cathode in the outer space, since zinc is on the bottom of the electrolysis attachment collects from which it can be deducted.
In the anode compartment one also uses a melt consisting of a molecular mixture of chlorine potassium and chlorine sodium, and in the cathode frame a melt consisting of a molecular mixture of chlorine zinc, chlorine potassium and chlorine sodium, with the addition of 10 0 fluorine sodium. The temperature of the electrolyte is maintained at approximately 700 ° C. and the voltage at 7 to 10 volts.
If the electrolysis is carried out at high temperature, the case can occur; that the body used for electrolysis overturns into plastic or semi-liquid form. In such cases it is necessary to put the diaphragm on suitable. Attach supporting organs that are not attacked by the electrolyte. For example, iron wire mesh can be rolled into glass (wired glass).
Such a Dia.phragma. can also be used in conjunction with powdery, granular or porous cores. for the purpose of preventing direct contact of any electrolysis products entrained by convolution with the separating layer.
