In secondo luogo,
[0001] The present invention relates to the field of processes and plants used to transform organic materials (such as for example bio-masses) into gas and coal by subjecting them to heat treatments, among which the best known is that of pyrolysis.
[0002] As is known to those skilled in the art, in a pyrolysis process the organic materials are heated to temperatures of approximately 500 to 850 deg. C, keeping them in that condition for a period of time sufficient to cause their complete transformation into combustible gas and coal. The coal can then be gasified in order to produce more fuel gas.
Similar types of treatment are currently performed in urban waste disposal centers.
[0003] The latter are introduced into a container called the pyrolysis reactor and are subjected to the above described treatment by supplying the reactor, acting on its external surface, with the required amount of heat.
This heat is normally supplied by an external source, even remote if it derives from electrical energy, therefore its administration always involves various factors that reduce the final efficiency of the heat exchange as a whole.
[0004] The inventor of the object of the present application has devised a new process, and a new type of plant adapted to carry it out, in which the aforesaid heat supplied to the pyrolysis reactor is obtained by completing the combustion of the coal produced by it, and making the fumes circulate around the reactor itself. Thus a higher overall energy yield is obtained, and large quantities of coal must not be disposed of or transferred, but only a very limited quantity of ash and other fixed residues.
Other measures to make the process of the invention and the relative plant even more efficient will be described in the following of the present description.
[0005] The object of the present invention is therefore constituted by a process for converting organic waste into gas and coal as described in the appended claim 1, as well as from a plant suitable for making it.
[0006] A more detailed description will now be given of a preferred embodiment of the process of the invention and of a plant adapted to carry it out, making also reference to the attached figure, which shows a longitudinal section of this installation during the execution of the process in question.
The material to be treated is sent towards the plant 1 (arrow A) through an inlet 4 provided with means (rotary valves, double guillotines,
double clapet etc.) to ensure water tightness with respect to the surrounding environment. Downstream of said inlet 4 a feeding apparatus 5 is installed which conveys the material (arrow B), by means of a screw feeder system, with pusher pistons or the like, towards the inside of a pyrolysis reactor, consisting of a rotating drum 2 jacketed, the walls of which are lapped by combustion fumes which pass through the space comprised between said rotating drum 2 and a thermally insulated chamber 3 which contains it, exiting (arrow C) through a discharge duct 13.
(As to the generation of these combustion fumes, an explanation will be given later in the present description.)
[0007] Such fumes transfer most of their heat to the pyrolysis reactor 2, inside which the material to be treated, reaching temperatures greater than or equal to approx. 500 deg.
C, undergoes a pyrolysis process, during which, as mentioned, gas and coal are generated.
While the pyrolysis gas escapes (arrow E) through an outlet duct 6, the coal, due to the rotation of the drum (possibly combined with an appropriate inclination of its longitudinal axis), moves (arrow D) towards a chamber of gasification 9 in which it is deposited (arrow F) and in which, by blowing in the comburent gas (oxygen, air, oxygen-enriched air and / or steam), partial combustion is obtained with relative partial gasification of the said pyrolysis coal.
[0008] While the synthesis gas produced comes out together with the pyrolysis gas (arrow E) through the already described outlet duct 6, the non-gasified coal passes (also by gravity) through a by-pass system 7,
provided with extraction means 8 which deposit it (arrow G) on a post-combustion grid 10 located in the lower area of said heat-insulated chamber 3 containing the pyrolysis reactor 2.
By means of an insufflating apparatus 11 the (not fully visible in the drawing) post-combustion grid, and the carbon bed deposited on it is passed through by an adjustable quantity of further comburent gas which, causing the combustion of the coal, generates fumes which, moving upwards through the thermally insulated chamber 3, lap the walls of the pyrolysis reactor before moving towards the already described discharge duct 13,
and give the reactor 2 itself the heat necessary to carry out the illustrated pyrolysis process of the materials to be treated therein.
[0009] The ashes and inerts produced by the aforesaid post-combustion are then removed by means of an extraction apparatus 12 of a known type, for example of the screw type as shown in the drawing.
[0010] Some characteristic aspects of the plant 1 which carries out the process of the invention must be reported.
Firstly, by adjusting the rotation speed of the rotating drum 2 constituting the pyrolysis reactor and / or the inclination of its axis, the residence time of the material inside it can be varied, obtaining for it a desired degree of pyrolysis.
Secondly,
by appropriately varying the quantity of comburent gas introduced into the gasification chamber 9, it is possible to obtain a quantity of coal less or at most equal to that generated in the pyrolysis reactor 2, thereby causing it to remain inside the said gasification chamber 9 always remains a bed of coal having the most suitable thickness to obtain a desired partial combustion thereof.
Thirdly, by varying the quantity and / or quality of the comburent gas blown through the said post-combustion grid 10, fumes can be generated having different volumes and / or temperatures, so as to influence the degree of pyrolysis in the desired direction. reached in the pyrolysis reactor 2 heated by it.
[0011] For systems intended for the treatment of large quantities of materials, given their high thermal capacity and the greater difficulties involved in heating them, the inventor has envisaged the possibility of conveying the synthesis gas that comes out of the gasification chamber 9 towards the "countercurrent" pyrolysis reactor 2, then taking them from an outlet duct arranged with respect to the reactor to the part where the material is introduced (ie to the right in the drawing).
This solution has not been depicted with drawings, being easily understandable and achievable by a person skilled in the art.
