Description
The present invention relates to a process for the metallizing painting of manufactured articles.
Currently, in various sectors of application, products made of cheap, light and easy to work materials, such as wood, plastics, expanded resins, plaster, etc., are increasingly in demand, for which a surface finish is desired which gives them a satisfying metallic appearance.
For example, in the sector of scenography components or furniture for exhibitions and expositions, in the sector of automotive prototypes or industrial articles in general, it is important to make these products using plastics or wood, both for lightness, ease of transport and low cost of the same, aspects relevant for use in scenography, both for the greater possibility of modeling prototypes in these materials rather than in metal, a fact that assumes particular importance for industrial modeling. Particularly interesting is the realization of the models in expanded resins, for the lightness, the easy availability and the low cost of these materials.
Furthermore, in many industrial productions, the request for metal products with mirror polished surfaces is increasingly frequent, such as in the automotive industry, wheel rims, moldings, accessories, etc., for which particular aesthetic qualities are required. has high resistance to chemical agents for relatively long times.
Queste caratteristiche sono normalmente ottenute mediante verniciature metallizzanti. These characteristics are normally obtained by metallizing paints.
However, working with normal pigmented paints, the difficulty and poor results obtainable are known, especially if you want to obtain a highly shiny and reflective mirror-like surface.
In the field of painting small objects, such as car models and similar objects, also made of plastic, the use of a metallizing painting process based on the formation of a thin metallic silver film is known, in analogy with the technique used in the production of mirrors, in which an ammonia solution of silver nitrate is reduced with a solution of formal aldehyde or other organic reducing agent such as glucose, obtaining a thin reflective film of metallic silver which gives the object the desired look.
However, these techniques are not applied to the formation of films with a metallizing effect on large objects or complex three-dimensional shapes, in which problems arise of adhesion of the silver film to the surface of the object, of homogeneity of the film itself and stability in the time, with the result of a worsening of the aesthetic aspect of the product.
A metallizing painting process designed to overcome the difficulties presented by the prior art is described in European Patent EP 346 954.
According to the teaching of the Patent EP 346 954, the painting process with metalizing effect of metal, wood or plastic products, even of large dimensions and complex shape, comprises the following steps, carried out in the indicated sequence: a) applying a base layer of alkyd resin, possibly added with one or more pigments of the desired color, to the surface of the product; b) drying said bottom layer of alkyd resin; c) applying an aqueous acid solution of 0.05-2% vol. to the bottom layer. of stannic chloride; d) washing the surface of the treated product with water; e) simultaneously spray on the surface of the product an aqueous solution of 5 to 15% vol. of silver nitrate in an ammonia complex and an aqueous solution of 1 to 5% vol. of a reducing sugar; f) washing the surface of the treated product with water; g) apply a transparent varnish on the surface of the product to form a protective layer; h) drying the painted surface obtained.
The base layer is made with the aim of obtaining a surface that lends itself better than that of the manufactured article to the adhesion of the metallizing layer on the manufactured article.
For this purpose, the resins used for the base layer must be able to fix themselves firmly to the material of which the product is made and must cover the porous surface of the product by providing a smooth and regular surface to allow homogeneous deposition of the subsequent metallizing layer.
However, the process described is not reliable since, in relation to step "a", the alkyd resins, used for direct application on the article, have a limited use due to the compatibility of the solvents and diluents that accompany them with the materials on which they are applied.
A first object of the present invention is therefore that of obviating the problem of anchoring the bottom layer by providing a method which does not present the mentioned drawbacks of the prior art.
Another drawback found in the process according to European Patent EP 346 954, is linked to the fact that the organic solvent-based paints used for the formation of the final transparent protective layer do not have sufficient adhesion to the metallized surface and therefore tend, with the passage of time, to detach itself causing the peeling of the metallizing film.
Furthermore, due to the atmospheric action, said protective layer thus formed tends to turn yellow with the result of a decline in the aesthetic qualities of the article.
It is therefore impossible to extend the aforementioned process to industrial production products intended for outdoor use and subject to wear.
A second object of the present invention is to obtain a much more effective adhesion of the protective layer on the metallizing film by providing a transparent protective layer highly resistant against the action of chemical agents, anti-scratch and anti-wear.
This and other objects of the present invention are achieved by the process for the metallizing painting of manufactured articles as claimed in the attached claims.
A detailed description of the invention will be given below.
The process according to the invention allows to obtain the metallization of manufactured articles made of metal, wood, plastic materials, expanded resins, plaster, cement, glass, etc.
The first phase of the process involves the application of a layer of preparation paint on the surface of the article, to improve the adhesion of the base resin to be applied in the next phase on the article.
The wide range of paint products on the market allows you to choose the paint that has greater compatibility with the material of which the product to be treated is composed, in this way it provides a layer well adherent to the product and more suitable for the subsequent anchoring of the base coat.
The preparation painting phase is followed by the application of a base coat of alkyd clinging resin of a type compatible with the paint used in the previous painting phase of preparation of the product.
After said application of the primer layer, a drying phase of the primer layer follows, carried out in the oven for 1 hour at a temperature of 50 DEG C or alternatively in the air for a time varying between 12 and 24 hours .
The phase of realization of the silver mirror follows, which gives the metallic aspect to the product, according to the reaction used in qualitative analytical chemistry for the recognition of aldehydes or aldoses called "Tollens test".
To make this reaction take place on the surface of the product, the following operations are necessary: - applying a 0.05-2% vol. acid aqueous solution to said primer layer. stannic chloride; - wash the surface of the treated product with water; - apply by spray, on the surface of the product, an aqueous solution of 5 to 15% vol. of silver nitrate in an ammonia complex and an aqueous solution of 1 to 5% vol. of a reducing sugar.
The metallized product thus obtained is then subjected to a washing step followed by a step of applying a protective resin layer consisting of water-soluble polyurethane resin.
The article is then finished by subjecting it to a drying phase carried out in the oven for 1 hour at a temperature of 50 DEG C or alternatively to air for a time varying between 12 and 24 hours.
If a greater resistance to chemical agents is desired, the metallized article with the above described procedure will be subjected to a further step of applying a protective layer obtained by applying an acrylic resin, transparent, soluble in organic solvent.
Thanks to this additional protective layer, the metallized product will be more protected against the action of chemical agents and will retain its gloss characteristics for longer without undergoing yellowing phenomena.
Furthermore, said layer of transparent acrylic resin soluble in organic solvent, being applied on the pre-existing layer consisting of water-soluble polyurethane resin, does not cause the detachment and yellowing problems encountered with the products obtained with the process according to the European Patent EP 346 954. .
After the application of the second protective layer, the article is subjected to a drying phase.
The manufactured article obtained with the process object of the invention has a uniformly metallized surface resistant to chemical agents and which does not show yellowing phenomena of the protective layer over time.
In a variant embodiment of the process object of the invention, a layer of transparent protective resin consisting of two-component acrylic-urethane resin is applied to the metallized article after the washing phase of the metallized layer.
The two-component acrylic urethane resin allows excellent resistance to chemical agents.
Therefore, after the drying phase of the two-component acrylic-urethane resin layer, carried out in the oven for 1 hour at a temperature of 60 DEG C or alternatively to air for a time varying between 16 and 24 hours, it is no longer necessary the application of a second layer of protective resin, and the product is ready for use.
From tests carried out by subjecting the product to salt spray, the surface protected with two-component acrylic urethane resin was found to resist for over 250 hours.
The manufactured article obtained with this manufacturing variant of the process has excellent characteristics of resistance to chemical agents, anti-scratch and anti-wear.
