Beschreibung description
Das erfindungsgemässe Verfahren ist im Patentanspruch 1 definiert. The method according to the invention is defined in claim 1.
The present invention allows papers containing calcium car bonate to be sized with resin size dispersions without decomposing calcium carbonate in the neutral or slightly alkaline pH range. Aluminum sulfate, which is used to precipitate and fix the size component, is usually used for resin sizing. The hydrolytic cleavage of the aluminum sulfate creates an acidic pH which, in the presence of calcium carbonate, leads to the decomposition of the calcium carbonate and thus to considerable production difficulties.
To overcome these difficulties, it is proposed in EP 0 063 812 to replace aluminum sulfate with polyaluminium chloride or in EPA 0 125 221 with polyaluminium sulfate. In U.S. Patent 3,540,980, the aluminum sulfate is partially replaced by sodium aluminate. Sufficient aluminate solution is first added to the aqueous fiber suspension to be sized until a pH of at least 9 is established. The pH is then adjusted using an inorganic acid or an acidic salt, e.g. Sulfuric acid or aluminum sulfate, lowered to a pH not less than 4.5.
EP 0 112 525 proposes a neutral sizing process in which the sodium aluminate is contained in the sizing agent. This sizing agent is mixed with fiber material containing calcium carbonate and then activated by adding organic or inorganic acids or acid-reacting aluminum salts.
In European patent specification 0 200 002, a sizing agent is proposed which consists of a mixture of tall resin dispersion and polyaluminium chloride. A method is also known in which a dilute resin dispersion is mixed with a dilute solution of aluminum sulfate or polyaluminium chloride before being added to the paper stock.
Common to all of these processes is that the fiber suspension containing calcium carbonate comes into contact with an acidic compound, be it an acid or an acidic aluminum salt. It is known that these acidic compounds lead to the decomposition of the calcium carbonate.
A sizing process is also known in practice, in which sodium aluminate solutions are added before, after or simultaneously in the immediate vicinity to neutralize the acidic aluminum components to the paper stock containing calcium carbonate and a resin size dispersion. This process allows sizing in the neutral pH range, the decomposition of the calcium carbonate is low, but not completely suppressed.
Trials on a laboratory scale to add the aluminum component required for sizing in the form of aluminum hydroxide, which was obtained by precipitation of aluminum sulfate with sodium hydroxide solution or sodium aluminate solution, gave negative results: the aluminum hydroxide produced in this way is very voluminous and is extremely difficult to distribute in the fiber . In addition, aluminum hydroxide precipitation is inhomogeneous, i.e. there are still alkaline inclusions that lead to sizing problems. Another disadvantage of the sizing effect of aluminum hydroxide is the rapid aging process.
Surprisingly, it has now been found that with aluminum hydroxide, which is produced in a high dilution in a homogeneous mixture and, after the shortest possible reaction time, the resin size dispersion or the paper stock containing calcium carbonate and the resin size dispersion is continuously added, excellent sizes are obtained without any decomposition of the calcium carbonate.
The homogeneous aluminum hydroxide can e.g. are generated by mixing a solution of 20-40 g / l aluminum sulfate with a solution of 10-50 g / l sodium aluminate in a suitable T mixer in stoichiometric ratios. The aluminum hydroxide solution formed has a pH of 6-8, preferably 6.5-7.5, particularly 6.8-7.2 and is at a flow rate of 2-10 m / sec. intensely mixed with the paper stock.
Commercial rosin * or tall resin dispersions are suitable as sizing agents. These have a solids content of 30-40%, a pH value of 6-8 and a free resin content of 75-97%. The resin size dispersions are usually added to the paper stock continuously before or after the mixer pump. Quantities of 0.2-1% solid resin on paper are usually used to achieve the desired degree of sizing.
A particularly suitable glue dispersion is sold by van Baerle Chemie under the name RESOPLAN®.
If the material cycle contains large amounts of so-called interfering substances, these can also be removed with the homogeneous aluminum hydroxide at the same time as the material sizing, especially if active silica is added to the aluminum hydroxide mixture. In practice, this is done by homogeneously reacting aluminum sulfate with a solution of sodium aluminate and sodium or potassium water glass in the T mixer mentioned above. Instead of the sodium aluminate, sodium hydroxide solution or only a dilute sodium silicate solution can be used.
A further possibility of combining the sizing with an elimination of impurities is made possible if cationic compounds such as RESIAFIX®, polyethylene imine, polyacrylamides, epichlorohydrin resins and cationic starch are added to the aluminum sulphate solution or polyaluminium chloride solution. After the reaction with sodium aluminate or caustic soda, a homogeneous aluminum hydroxide is formed which, due to its cationic character, absorbs both the resin particles and the contaminants.
