Description
The present invention relates to methods and to a device for cleaning molten salt baths for the structural treatment and / or structural change of workpieces made of metallic, preferably iron-containing materials.
In the sense of the present invention, molten salt baths are melts of salts or salt mixtures for the treatment of workpieces at high temperatures, in particular for heating, annealing, hardening, artificial aging or the like, in which the structure of metallic materials or alloys is treated in a targeted manner or crystal structures are changed. In particular, such molten salts are used as so-called nitriding baths for nitriding ferrous materials.
Molten salt baths of the aforementioned type (see, for example, Hut 1,28th edition, page 431) become contaminated by the material used and by chemical reactions between the molten salt bath and the surface of the treated workpieces. They must therefore be cleaned or regenerated regularly from time to time.
It is known to use basket-like containers for cleaning such molten salt baths, in particular nitriding baths, which are adapted to the diameter and depth of the salt bath. These basket-like containers are made of load-bearing perforated metal sheets and provided with one or more fine-meshed sieves. After prior or simultaneous strong aeration of the molten salt bath, the containers are immersed in it and lowered to the bottom. After a certain settling and settling time, the baskets are taken out again, whereby coarse dirt has settled according to the mesh size of the sieves and can be removed.
The disadvantage of this procedure is that only coarse impurities with particle sizes that correspond to the sieve perforation of 75 to 120 µm or larger particles can be removed. The finer, iron-containing floating particles, which are increasingly present in the recently used low-cyan salt baths, are only recorded by chance. Since they are preferably deposited as a very fine coating on the workpiece surface, the coating must be removed by extensive reworking for each individual part. Another disadvantage is that the quality of the nitrided parts is impaired by the porosity of the connecting layer.
The removal of the sludge formed by the contamination in the molten salt bath with sieve-like trowels or sludge pans has also not proven itself.
It is also known to the person skilled in the art that nitriding baths, which were used to treat cast parts or parts with forged or rolled skin or scale, can only be cleaned with great effort and long downtimes for the nitriding of other workpieces. This is all the more the case, the higher the demands on the cleanliness of the parts to be nitrided as well as on the degree of purity and the ductility of the connection layer. For this, the cleaning process described above has to be repeated several times, the workload being very high and the molten salt bath meanwhile failing for production.
Cleaning the newly developed cyanide-free or low-cyanide baths with higher levels of cyanate and of such nitriding baths with or without sulfur emission is even more difficult. The parts treated in the baths are used to demonstrate the degree of purity of such baths. Regardless of the type of cooling, e.g. vacuum, air, water, oil or molten salt, the workpieces treated in poorly cleaned nitriding baths are provided with a black, firmly adhering coating, which shows a strongly porous connection layer with corresponding brittleness when examined metallographically.
The difficulties described in the cleaning or removal of settled sludge in molten salt baths according to the previously known methods are greater, the higher the requirements for the purity of the baths. The difficulties also increase with the depth of the molten salt baths, since the longer distance when the baskets are removed means that more of the floating particles deposited on the sieves flow back into the bath with the flowing molten salt.
The object of the present invention is to provide effective and time-saving methods for cleaning molten salt baths, so that a high degree of purity of the molten salt bath is achieved without repeated repetition of the cleaning process and the cleaning of deep molten salt baths is also made possible.
The solution to the stated problem results from the characterizing part of patent claim 1 for molten salt baths, in which contamination which is in suspension and deposited at the bottom of the molten salt bath is separated by a filter screen immersed in the molten salt bath. An advantageous embodiment of the specified method results from claims 2 and 3.

In Anspruch 5 ist eine bevorzugte Ausgestaltung des Verfahrens angegeben. nigen in which contaminants deposited on the surface can be skimmed off by sieve-like trowels or mud pans results from the characterizing part of claim 4. Claim 5 specifies a preferred embodiment of the method.
The device for carrying out the specified method for cleaning molten salt baths from suspended particles and settled sludges is specified in claim 6. A preferred embodiment of this device, in which the basket-like containers known per se are used, is described in claim 7.
The present invention not only makes it possible to remove coarse impurities - as was previously possible only - but in particular the disruptive finest suspended particles from a molten salt bath, preferably a nitriding bath. The devices and tools required for this are less complex with regard to the improvements achieved with regard to the quality of the molten salt bath, so that the contaminations of the molten salt bath can be removed once per shift or working day with little expenditure of time and relatively low costs for working time and loss of production.
The regular cleaning of the molten salt bath and the removal of the fine floating particles result in significantly better and more uniform nitriding results, which can be demonstrated in particular by comparative metallographic examinations. In particular, the connection layer has a high ductility, i.e. high ductility and ductility, and shows only slight porosity.
Furthermore, it is advantageous that the molten salt baths, which were used for the treatment of castings or parts with rolled or forged skin, can be cleaned with a single cleaning process to such an extent that they can be used again for the treatment of other components with higher cleanliness requirements Connection layer and its ductility can be used. This can save high costs for the molten salt baths on the one hand and for the reprocessing or environmentally friendly deposition of the dirty, unusable salt molten baths.
The invention is illustrated below using an exemplary embodiment with reference to the drawing. The single figure shows an embodiment of the device according to the invention for cleaning a molten salt bath. The device consists of an outer basket 1, the bottom and outer surface of which are made of sturdy perforated sheet metal in order to give the device the necessary rigidity. A plurality of support rods 2, preferably two or three support rods, are welded to the outer edge of the basket 1 or fastened in a suitable manner. The support rods are connected at the upper end to a ring 3, in which ring a hook of a trolley movably arranged above the molten salt bath can be hung. The basket 1 is covered on the bottom and on its inner surface with the filter auxiliary layer 4 according to the invention. The thickness of this filter aid layer of, for example, 10 to 60 mm, preferably 20 to 40 mm, consists of inorganic fiber material, in particular glass wool or rock wool, or mats or random fiber fleece made from these materials. Other inorganic fiber materials can also be used, the given materials being given priority because of the high temperature resistance, the lower chemical reactivity and the price. In any case, these fiber materials are preferred to slag wool and other mineral fiber materials, either for reasons of chemical resistance or because of the simpler and cheaper availability (e.g. asbestos fibers). The outer basket 1 is preferably covered with mats made of glass fibers or rock wool. Spacers 5 prevent the filter auxiliary layer 4 from being pressed too tightly and centering of the inner basket 6 in the outer basket 1. The inner basket 6 is inserted into the outer basket and secured by radially arranged pins or screws 11. The molten salt bath is designated 7 and the crucible 8. The furnace 9 itself is only partially shown, so that the complete depth of the molten salt bath cannot be seen. With 10 the heating element of the furnace for heating the molten salt bath 7 in the crucible 8 is designated.
To clean the molten salt bath, depending on the degree of soiling, the crucible wall and the bottom of the crucible are first brushed off to remove any contaminants. Then the cleaning device described above is immersed in the molten salt bath 7 and lowered on the holding rods 2 to the bottom of the crucible. The molten salt bath is displaced from the basket due to the filter resistance, rises on the side wall of the outer basket 1 and flows into the inner basket. After reaching the bottom of the crucible, the cleaning device with the hook of the trolley hooked into the ring 3 is slowly pulled up, now essentially the entire molten salt bath is filtered through the filter auxiliary layer 4 arranged between the baskets 1 and 6.
After pulling the basket out of the molten salt bath, this is cleaned and can be used again. By removing the locking pins, the inner basket is now pulled out and the filter auxiliary layer 4 is removed or renewed. Preparing the auxiliary filter layer for reuse is not sensible for cost reasons.
The fiber material used makes it possible to remove very fine impurities and floating particles from the molten salt bath. Depending on the crucible size, the fiber consumption per cleaning is 300 to 600 g. The time for cleaning the molten salt bath is short compared to the known cleaning methods, the process need not be repeated, and a dwell time of the filter device on the base of the crucible for settling contamination is not necessary. This is because the basket can be pulled out of the molten salt bath immediately at the speed that allows the molten salt to pass through the filter.
Regarding the basket, it should also be mentioned that, depending on the depth of the molten salt bath, it should be appropriately 200 to 500 mm high and the cross section should be adapted to the size of the molten salt bath so that the entire molten salt bath must flow through the filter layer; This means that the outside diameter of the basket 1 should not be very much smaller than the diameter of the crucible in order to capture the entire molten salt bath as possible and to clean it in one operation.
The procedure for cleaning the surface of the molten salt bath, in particular the nitriding bath, is as follows: Deposits that rise to the surface of the molten salt bath during the nitriding process and from there depending on the surface properties of the feed material (rolled skin, cast skin, etc.). and the previous cleaning of the parts form an iron-containing foam, can be easily removed before removing the batch,

Der Schaum und die darin enthaltenen Verunreini- by scattering loose inorganic fiber materials, such as loose rock or glass wool or the like, on the bathroom surface.
