Abstract

Reactive dyes are allowed to strike polyamide textile fibres at room temperature and a pH of about 2; the dyeing liquor has been adjusted to this pH with trichloroacetic acid. The temperature of the dye bath is then slowly raised to the boil and kept thereat until the dye has been fixed. Upon boiling, the trichloroacetic acid decomposes into chloroform and CO2, whereby the pH of the bath rises to about 7.5, i.e. to a value at which fixing next occurs and free dye is inactivated. The dyeings obtained are very level. Exhaustion and fixing requires less time, and there is a saving of chemicals.
