Description
The present invention relates to a cored welding wire and to a process for the manufacture of such a wire.
These cored wires, used both for welding metal parts by automatic or semi-automatic arc welding with or without a protective gas atmosphere and for reloading metal parts, consist of a core of powder surrounded by a sheath metallic. The metal sheath is most often made of steel, alloyed or not, and it has a circular shape with a diameter between 0.5 and 10 mm. The powder core is formed from powdery mineral and metallic products, such as especially slag, fluxes, deoxidizers or alloys which constitute between 10 and 70% of the total weight of the cored wire.
We know such son said not closed. The envelope of these, shaped from a metallic tape, has a non-watertight longitudinal seal which is formed either by the edges of the tape which touch each other along an axial line, or by the marginal zones of the tape which overlap by simple superposition. However, the juxtaposition of the longitudinal edges and the superposition of the marginal zones are not such as to guarantee a hermetic isolation of the powder from the external atmosphere. The powder can therefore deteriorate during transport or storage or during the processing of the cored wire or the blank used for its production. Furthermore, this design is only suitable for cored wires of relatively thick diameter.
Unlike unclosed cored wires, so-called welded wires are absolutely waterproof. Their manufacture, which was formerly practically impossible because the contamination of the edges of the blank by powder during profiling or during welding did not make it possible to obtain a welding joint sufficiently impeccable for a suitable drawing of the blank, is now very easy thanks to the process according to French patent N ° 74.17830. In this process, a steel strip is first continuously transformed into a channel-shaped profile and a powder mixture is introduced into the bottom of this channel. The powder is then covered using a thin metal strip which retains the powder at the bottom of the channel when the blank is closed and when the joint is welded. The filled blanks obtained have an impeccable welded joint and a uniform filling and can be subjected to drawing without much difficulty. However, for very thin diameters the drawing conditions deteriorate, since the wall of the blank does not remain uniformly cylindrical during drawing, but has thicker walled areas followed by thicker walled areas thinner and more fragile when stretched. This drawback becomes even more pronounced if the powder contains particles of hard metals which sink into the wall of the preform and constitute fracture initiators there. Under these conditions, production interruptions are frequent and the waste quite significant.
The present invention therefore aims to remedy these drawbacks.
The cored welding wire according to the present invention of a coat made up of a metal surrounded powder core is characterized in that the coat is formed by two sheaths, one in contact with the other, the inner sheath being made up of two independent bands extending in the axial direction and each lining a part of the inner wall of the outer sheath, the single joint of the outer sheath extending approximately on the center line of the underlying band of the inner sheath.
The two bands covering the inner wall of the outer casing of the cored wire in the form of a sheath are often of the same composition as the material of the outer casing, that is to say generally of mild steel. They may also have a different composition, for example encompassing metallic elements exerting any action during welding, provided that they have a ductility which is not substantially less than that of the material of the outer sheath. In general, these strips are thinner than the strip forming the outer sheath.
As the joints of the inner sheath are covered by the outer sheath and as the joints are generally at least a quarter of the circumference of the wire, the sealing is so perfect that one can generally avoid overlapping the edges of the outer sheath or to weld the joint formed by the edges of the outer sheath which dock. Furthermore, the edges of the two thinner strips constituting the inner sheath generally overlap and virtually guarantee a tight assembly on their own. The risk of deformation of the edges of the outer sheath joint during winding and unwinding operations is much lower than for conventional unclosed filled wires, since the compacted powder is contained by the inner sheath and does not not act directly

However, there is nothing to prevent the outer seal from being closed by welding, in particular with a view to drawing to very small diameters of the order of 1 mm, since all the conditions for producing an impeccable welding seal are data.
Since the metal sheath surrounding the powder core retains a smooth surface over the entire circumference vis-à-vis the outer sheath, drawing of the double-sheath filled blanks is carried out without breaking down to the thinnest diameters . In fact, during stretching, the plastic flow of the material of the perfectly cylindrical outer sheath can take place without any obstacle resulting from the shape or the nature of the underlying material, as was the case hitherto.
The double-sheathed cored wires generally have a circular section and are obtained from circular or oval blanks.
Circular or polygonal blanks can however also be shaped, especially drawn and then rolled so that the cored wire obtained has a substantially rectangular section. In general, the width of such so-called flat filled wires is at least five times greater than the thickness. These wires are specially suitable for obtaining wide weld beads in arc processes with or without protective gas or under flux.
The method of manufacturing the wire according to the present invention comprises the transformation of a metallic strip into a channel-shaped profile, the introduction of a mixture of welding powder into the channel, the shaping of the sides of the channel up to closing the blank on a joint and reducing the section of the blank to the desired diameter and is characterized in that a metallic strip is introduced into the pre-ditch, which follows the shape of the bottom of the ditch and extends to at least half the height of the lateral flanks of the channel, that a bead of the mixture of welding powder is deposited in the strip lining the bottom of the channel and that the powder is covered with using a second strip whose edges are folded down.
According to one embodiment, the metal strip intended to form the lower part of the inner sheath is pre-shaped using profiteer rollers and then inserted into the channel.
According to another embodiment, the strip for coating the bottom of the channel is brought in the direction of the prefaced channel and is pressed against the bottom of the latter using a rotary roller.
The upper strip, which covers the powder bead by pressing against the sides of the lower strip, can be dimensioned so that the blank can be closed without jamming this strip in the joint.
The installation for the manufacture of these double-sheathed cored wires corresponds, as regards the tools for the shaping of the outer casing and of the upper strip, for the powder supply, for the possible welding of the joint, as well as for s the reduction of the blank section, to that described in French patent N ° 74.17830. We only have to add the necessary tools to shape and put in place the strip intended to line the bottom of the open blank of the outer sheath.
An exemplary embodiment is described below in relation to the single figure which presents a section through a filled blank with double sheath with welded joint.
A mild steel strip 1 with a width of 32 mm and a thickness of 1.8 mm is formed using rollers in a profile having the shape of a channel of 7 mm deep and 23 mm 15 wide.
A strip 2 20 mm wide and 0.3 mm thick is folded into an arc by means of rollers and introduced against the bottom of the channel.
The channel lined with the profiled strip 2 runs under a metering feeder which deposits a bead of welding powder 4 therein.
At the outlet of the feeder-doser, a cover sheet 3 folded in an arc from a strip 20 mm wide and 0.3 mm thick is placed on the powder cord in such a way that the edges of the cover sheet 25 touch the sides of the strip lining the bottom of the channel.
The preformed blank is drawn through a die in which the edges of the channel are folded so as to come to abut one against the other.
After flame cleaning, the blank is ready to be sent 3o either to a welding station for closing the joint, or to a reduction station of the blank section. This last operation is carried out by rolling or stretching in order to already obtain a certain tightening of the powder allowing the handling of the blank.
The reduction of the section of the blank to the final diameter of the cored wire is carried out by drawing.
As an example, we mention a double sheathed cored wire for assembly and reloading which has a diameter of 0.9 mm.
40 Les gaines présentent les caractéristiques suivantes : 40 The ducts have the following characteristics:
— gaine extérieure: acier doux calmé; - outer sheath: soft mild steel;
— gaine intérieure: acier doux calmé; - inner sheath: mild steel calmed;
— âme de la poudre : 80% d'éléments d'alliages métalliques et 20% de flux; - powder core: 80% of metal alloy elements and 20% flux;
