Abstract

A lathe for generating a spherical or aspherical surface on a lens (W) comprises a chuck (mandrel) (22) supporting the lens (W), so that it revolves about its axis. A saddle (29) carries a cutting tool (T) into a position in which the latter projects in the direction of the lens (W). The saddle (29) is placed on the upper surface of a slide (28) on which it pivots by virtue of a pivot (30). The saddle (29) is rotated about the axis of the pivot (30) by a conventional device to make it oscillate progressively about this axis. A slide (35) supports the tool (T), so that it freely performs a floating movement forwards and backwards whilst being stressed elastically towards the front by a spring (36) into contact with the lens (W). A device supporting a cam (50) independently of the saddle (29) allows an adjustment in the direction of rotation of the lens (W) either perpendicularly to the latter or in both directions. <IMAGE>
