Abstract

The edge (11) of a rotating lens (L) is maintained in contact with a grinder (3) by controlling its movement in two perpendicular directions. A shaft (4) supports the lens, its axial (OX) and radial (OY) movements being controlled by a cam follower (12, 13) mechanism and a template (G) folowing a fixed contact (2) respectively. The follower and the cam are maintained in contact and their relationship in the radial direction (OY) is adjustable. High and low grinder and lens speeds respectively are utilised during grinding, the process being initiated with the contact on the max templete radius and the follower (13) at an indexed datum point.
