Abstract

1463508 Grinding lens CURRY & PAXTON SERVICES Ltd 20 Feb 1975 [20 Feb 1974] 7640/74 Heading B3D A lens holding device for use in the manufacture of optical lenses comprises a body portion 14 having a first rear surface adapted to be gripped in the collet 8 of a lens generating machine and a front second surface 18 which is concave and receives in sliding relationship a lens carrier 12 having a rear convex surface 36 complementary to surface 18 and a front second surface 38 provided with means 44 to grip a lens-supporting button 4, the construction and arrangement being such that the lens carrier 12 is slidable with respect to the body portion 14 in arcuate movement about a point X on or substantially on a forwardly extended centre line of the body portion. The rear surface 16 of the body portion projects annularly so as to be gripped by the collet 8, and the front surface 18, which is concave and part spherical, of the body portion has a diametral groove 19. A scale ring 22 is rotatably adjustable on the body portion, has screws 24 engaging a circumferential groove 20, and carries an indicator bar 29. A reduced thickness portion of the body portion is provided with a diametral slot 30 and a prism angle scale 32. The lens carrier rear surface 36 slidably engages surface 18 and the front surface 38 receives the button 4 which is secured by moulded alloy 6 to the lens 2, the button being secured by a screw acting on a clamping ring 44. A recess 46 in the button receives an axis pin 48 urged towards the button by a spring 50 in a radially extending groove 51 in the lens carrier, the groove also receiving a stud 28 secured to the indicator bar 29. An insert 52 projects from the rear surface of the carrier and has a projection 51 engaging the groove 50 and a pin 54 which projects through slot 30 and has a graduation for indication against scale 32. A screw 56 extends through the slot 30 into the insert for locking together the body portion and lens carrier. When screw 56 is loosened, the lens carrier may be tilted in the direction determined by engagement of the stud 28 with the groove 51, the stud being adjusted by rotation of the scale ring 22 and bar 29, the movement or angle of prism be indicated by the index on screw 54 against the graduations on scale 32.
