The invention relates to a process for the preparation of a-methyl acetate acetic acid ethyl ester by reacting formaldehyde with acetoacetic ester.
It is known to produce an alkylidene compound by condensing acetoacetic ester with an aldehyde, which is then converted to the alkyl derivative by hydrogenation. However, this method should not be suitable for preparing methyl acetate acetic ester, since the intermediate compounds tend to polymerize or other side reactions. The process is also unsatisfactory for compounds with higher alkyl radicals because the formation of the alkylidene compound is reversible and only a poor yield results. Particular care must be taken during the reaction to ensure that the water that forms is continuously eliminated during the reaction.
Therefore, in Belgian patent no. 760 034 it is proposed to carry out the production of α-methyl acetoacetic ester by reacting acetoacetic ester with formaldehyde in aqueous solution or with paraformaldehyde in acetic acid solution under the simultaneous action of hydrogen and 3% Pd / C.
(CH3COO) 2Zn 2H2O, ZnCl2 and piperidine were used as the catalyst for the Knoevenagel condensation.
According to the examples given, the yield of α-methyl acetate acetic ester (calculated as 100% product) is 40 to 54%, based on the acetoacetic ester used. The purity of the distilled product is given as 91 to 96%.
The invention is based on the object of finding a process for the production of a-methyl acetic acid ethyl ester which ensures a high yield and high purity of the end product and also simplifies the previously difficult isolation of the a-methyl acetic acid ester by distillation.
According to the invention, this is achieved by introducing gaseous formaldehyde into the acetoacetic ester in the presence of acetic anhydride and, when the reaction has ended, hydrogenating the reaction mixture.
Formaldehyde: acetoacetic ester: acetic anhydride in a molar ratio of 1.1 to 1.5: 1: 1.4 to 1.5, preferably 1.2: 1: 1.4, is expediently used. The reaction is expediently carried out at temperatures from 0 to 40.degree. C., preferably from 15 to 25.degree.
The process is expediently carried out by adding the acetoacetic ester and the acetic anhydride together in a reaction vessel and mixing them. Gaseous formaldehyde, which was expediently obtained by pyrolysis of paraformaldehyde, is introduced into the reaction mixture through a heated pipe. When the addition is complete, the contents of the reaction vessel are transferred to an autoclave, the hydrogenation catalyst is added and the hydrogenation is then carried out in a known manner.
Of course, the formaldehyde can also be added directly in the autoclave; this makes it unnecessary to transfer the reaction mixture from the first reaction vessel into the autoclave.
After the catalyst has been removed and the solvent has been evaporated off, the α-methyl acetic acid ester is isolated by vacuum distillation.
In the process according to the invention, the acetoacetic ester is almost quantitatively consumed by the formaldehyde for the main reaction and for side reactions. Therefore, the crude product contains extremely small amounts of acetoacetic ester before distillation. The much higher boiling products from the side reactions do not affect the isolation of the α-methyl acetic acid ester.
By simple vacuum distillation with a short column, an α-methyl acetic acid ester with a content of 97% is obtained without a great deal of equipment and energy consumption.
The product produced according to the invention can be used for the production of vic. Dimethyl heterocycles can be used, e.g. B. of 4,5-dimethylpyrimidine derivatives, which can be used as pesticides.
Examples
1. A 1 liter 4-neck flask equipped with a stirrer, thermometer, gas inlet tube and reflux condenser was charged with 260 g (2 mol) of ethyl acetoacetate and 286 g (2.8 mol) of acetic anhydride.
72 g of paraformaldehyde were placed in an adjacent 0.5 liter 1-neck flask and the two flasks were then connected by a gas inlet pipe which could be heated with water (water temperature about 95 ° C.).
The pyrolysis of paraformaldehyde was carried out by heating with a heating mantle and with the additional help of an IR lamp on the upper part of the flask. The formaldehyde formed entered the mixture of acetoacetic ester + acetic anhydride in gaseous form. The mixture was stirred while the formaldehyde was added and kept at 20 ° C. by means of external cooling. The addition of the formaldehyde was complete after 40 minutes. The slightly yellowish solution was then poured into a 1 liter autoclave. After 5 g of 5% Pd / C had been added, the autoclave was closed and, with stirring and at room temperature, H2 was introduced up to a pressure of 50 atm. The pressure dropped 2 to 3 times to 20 to 30 atmospheres and was set back to 50 atmospheres. After about 3 hours the pressure remained constant.
The reaction mass was then heated to 100 ° C. for one hour, some H2 still being adsorbed.
After cooling to 20 ° C., the reaction mixture was freed from the Pd / C by filtration, concentrated in a rotavapor and the residue that remained was distilled at 1.5 torr in a short column.
Yield: Fraction 2 from the distillation weighed 220 g / content 96.5%, corresponding to 212.3 g of 100% α-methyl acetic acid ester and a yield of 73.6%, based on the aceto acetic ester used. The crude yield (before distillation) was about 78%.
The other examples (2 to 7), which were carried out in the same apparatus and with the same procedure as described in Example 1, are given in the table below.
