Abstract

The harbour wall approximates in cross section to an inverted U section with assymetric diverging legs, supported on piles and made of precast reinforced concrete slab units. The hollow interior (6) functions as a "swell" absorber and the piles (7, 8 etc.) adapt the principle to poor foundation conditions, being driven into the sea bed (2). The short leg of the U (34) slopes at say 10 deg. to the vertical faces the harbour and is formed by one slab, and the longer leg sloping at say 20 deg. to the vertical, formed by two slabs (35, 36) abutting at a horizontal step (24, 26). Three transversely spaced braces (31, 32, 33) on the piles support slab end bearing longitudinal capping beams (37 etc.). The upper wall slabs (34, 35) bear against one another to form a horizontal top (19) to the wall.
