The invention relates to a process for the production of polyhydric phenols from o-chlorophenol by melting with an alkali metal hydroxide.
Polyvalent, especially dihydric phenols can be obtained from natural raw materials, e.g. B. from products of the heat treatment of coal, or synthetically. In view of their further use, among the dihydric phenols resorcinol, hydroquinone and, above all, pyrocatechol, are of interest.
Since the natural sources of the dihydric phenols are limited, attention is also directed to the synthetic production of the dihydric phenols. The synthesis of dihydric phenols from dichlorobenzenes or from chlorophenols is usually recommended. From an economic point of view, the most suitable method of preparation is the melt of chlorophenol with sodium hydroxide.
So z. B. from o-chlorophenol pyrocatechol, from m-chlorophenol resorcinol and from p-chlorophenol hydroquinone. However, as is known from literature sources, the cited hydroxylation reactions are by no means selective. Thus, according to British Patent 384 254, a reaction mixture can be obtained from o-chlorophenol by melting with sodium hydroxide which contains 37.5% pyrocatechol, 58.5% resorcinol and the remainder unreacted chlorophenol. This type of production of dihydric phenols is only suitable when the production of catechol and also of resorcinol is desired. In other cases, however, it is necessary that the hydroxylation reaction is conducted in such a way that the main product is one of the dihydric phenols.
Surprisingly, it has now been found that it is possible to produce pyrocatechol from o-chlorophenol in addition to a small amount of resorcinol.
The process according to the invention for the production of polyhydric phenols from o-chlorophenol is marked thereby. that o-chlorophenol is melted in the presence of copper, its oxides or copper (II) sulfate as a catalyst under a protective gas atmosphere with an alkali metal hydroxide at a temperature of 700-360 C, that the reaction product is dissolved in water and neutralized with a mineral acid, that the polyhydric phenols obtained are extracted with an organic solvent from the aqueous solution and then isolated.
The reaction is preferably carried out at a temperature of 250 770 C. The polyhydric phenols can be extracted from the aqueous solution with an organic extractant and isolated, for example by distillation and crystallization. The catalyst is preferably present in an amount of 0.1-56Xc copper, based on the chlorophenol present. As has been established through tests under the conditions listed, catechol is formed alongside a small amount of resorcinol and higher-valent phenols.
Preferred embodiments of the invention are explained in more detail below with the aid of examples.
example 1
1 kgmol of o-chlorophenol is homogenized with 4 kgmol sodium hydroxide and 0.002 kgmol of a mixture of copper / I / and copper / II / oxide. The homogeneous mixture is heated in the reactor at atmospheric pressure to a temperature of 260 ° C. After 10 minutes, the reaction has ended and the reaction mixture is dissolved in water, neutralized with sulfuric acid and the polyhydric phenols are extracted from the aqueous solution with butyl acetate. The pyrocatechol is obtained from the extract in an amount of 0.58 kgmol, resorcinol in an amount of 0.08 kgmol and the higher-valent phenols in an amount of 0.05 kgmol by distillation.
Example 2
1 kgmol o-chlorophenol is dissolved in a solution of 4 kgmol sodium hydroxide in 10 kgmol water and 0.008 kgmol copper / II / sulfate are added with constant mixing. The solution is slowly heated, water is distilled off and the temperature of the homogeneous mixture in the reactor rises to 2700C. After this temperature has been reached, the reaction product is dissolved in water, neutralized with hydrochloric acid, and the polyhydric phenols are extracted from the aqueous solution with butyl acetate. 0.56 kgmol of pyrocatechol, 0.08 kgmol of resorcinol and 0.07 kgmol of higher-valent phenols are obtained from the extract by distillation.
Example 3
1 kgmol o-chlorophenol is dissolved in a solution of 4 kgmol sodium hydroxide in 10 kgmol water and the aqueous solution is introduced into a copper rotating cylinder.
The water distills off and the melt is heated to a temperature of 250ob. The reaction product is immediately rinsed out of the copper cylinder with water, the aqueous solution is neutralized with carbon dioxide and the higher-valent phenols are extracted from the aqueous solution using butyl acetate. By rectification, pyrocatechol is obtained from the extract in an amount of 0.61 kgmol, resorcinol in an amount of 0.05 kgmol and higher phenols in an amount of 0.05 kgmol.
All reactions were carried out in a nitrogen atmosphere. The non-reacting components of o-chlorophenol, which coded in the nitrogen flow, were mixed with the non-reacting o-chlorophenol, which passed from the distillation column as the first fraction before the pyrocatechol, and returned to production.
