Fig. 1 zeigt ein Ausführungsbeispiel der Vorrichtung in Seitenansicht, wobei zusätzlich auch ein Teil einer Blutentnahmespritze dargestellt ist;
Fig. 2 zeigt in grösserem Massstab den einen Bauteil der Vorrichtung im axialen Längsschnitt;
Fig. 3 ist ein analoger Längsschnitt nach der Linie 111-111 in Fig. 2;
Device for determining the rate of sedimentation of blood cells in a transparent tube
The present invention relates to a device for determining the rate of sedimentation of blood cells in a transparent tube into which the blood to be examined is expediently filled up to a reference mark.
Several different procedures and devices are known for filling the blood into the tube and for securing the filled blood against running out, all of which have their advantages and disadvantages. A particular difficulty arises from the fact that the blood at least partially dries up during and after the measurement time, as a result of which the devices become unusable for further blood sedimentation measurements or can only be cleaned again with difficulty. There is therefore a need for such devices which can be thrown away after a single use and which have such a low cost price that throwing them away after their single use does not entail any intolerable economic disadvantages.
The object on which the invention is based is to create a device of the type mentioned at the beginning, which allows simple and convenient handling and can be manufactured so cheaply in terms of price that it is economically justified to discard the device after a single use.
This object is achieved by the device according to the invention, which is characterized by a cuff which is designed at one end for the liquid-tight reception of the lower end of the tube and at the other end for the liquid-tight attachment of the nipple of a blood collection syringe provided for attaching a hollow needle and a transverse, elastic in its middle part contains flexible membrane, which has an opening that closes automatically due to the elasticity of the membrane for filling the blood into the tube.
With this design of the device, the blood to be examined can be pressed directly from the blood sampling syringe with the aid of its piston through the cuff into the tube, the perforation of the membrane opening under the generated liquid pressure. Once the required amount of blood has been poured into the tube, you only need to stop actuating the plunger and remove the syringe from the cuff, whereby the opening in the membrane closes automatically, preventing the blood from flowing back out of the tube. The cuff of course remains pushed onto the lower end of the tube.
In an expedient embodiment of the device, the opening in the membrane can be a straight slot which runs at least approximately diametrically. With particular advantage, the cuff can also be elastically stretchable and, together with the membrane, consist of a single rubber-elastic piece of material. The tube can be an inexpensive plastic tube, e.g. B. be a well-known drinking straw.
Further details and advantages of special embodiments of the invention can be found in the description of a preferred embodiment that follows and in the accompanying drawing.
1 shows an embodiment of the device in side view, part of a blood sampling syringe also being shown;
Fig. 2 shows on a larger scale one component of the device in axial longitudinal section;
FIG. 3 is an analogous longitudinal section along the line 111-111 in FIG. 2;
FIG. 4 is a cross section along the line IV-IV in FIG. 2.
According to FIG. 1, the device shown has a transparent tube 10, which expediently consists of cheap plastic and can, for example, be designed in the manner of a conventional drinking straw.
The tube 10 is open at both ends and advantageously has a reference mark 11 in the vicinity of one end, up to which the blood to be examined is to be filled into the tube. The other end of the tube 10 facing away from the reference mark 11 is pushed in a liquid-tight manner into a component 12, the design of which will now be explained in more detail with reference to FIGS. 2 to 4.
The component 12 consists of a single piece of material, but forms two functionally different parts, namely a tubular sleeve 13 and a diaphragm 14 arranged transversely in the middle section of the sleeve. The interior of the sleeve 13 is divided into two parts 13a and 13b by the diaphragm 14 divided. The part 13a is used to receive the lower end portion of the tube 10 described above and has an inwardly projecting, annular sealing lip 15, which is elastically flexible and has the task of being tight and liquid-tight on the outer surface of the tube 10 when it is in the part 13a of the sleeve 13 is inserted.
The opposite part 13b of the cuff 13 is for the liquid-tight attachment of the conical nipple 16 of a conventional blood collection syringe 17 provided for attaching a hollow needle (Fig.
1) determined. The inner surface 18 of the cuff section 13b is conical in accordance with the standardized nipple 16, so that the diameter of the inner surface 18 decreases towards the membrane 14.
The membrane 14 is provided with an opening 19, which is designed as a straight slot which runs approximately diametrically and expediently does not extend all the way to the inner surface 20 of the sleeve portion 13a receiving the tube 10, as FIGS. 3 and 4 show. The membrane 14 is elastically resilient, so that the opening 19 can be widened against the elastic effect of the membrane and automatically closes again when the membrane is at rest.
Since, as mentioned, the sleeve 13 and the membrane 14 together form a single component 12, it is expedient to manufacture the entire component 12 from rubber-elastic material, which ensures the necessary elastic flexibility of the membrane 14 and the sealing lip 15. This brings the additional advantage that the cuff 13 itself is elastically stretchable, whereby the desired liquid-tight seal between the cuff 13 and the tube 10 or between the cuff and the nipple 14 of the blood collection syringe 17 is improved and also the widening of the opening 19 of the Membrane 14 is facilitated by a certain stretching of the central part of the cuff 13 in the radial direction.
This last-mentioned property of the cuff 13 is particularly exploited in the illustrated embodiment by the following measure: The part 13b of the cuff intended for attaching the nipple 16 of the blood collection syringe 17 has two opposite inclined surfaces 21 on the inside, which approach one another towards the membrane 14 and directly adjoin the membrane 14. The inclined surfaces 21 are arranged on the one or the other side of the slot-shaped opening 19 at some distance therefrom, as can be clearly seen in FIGS. 2 and 4. When the nipple 16 is inserted into the cuff section 13b, the front end of the nipple 16 moves against the two inclined surfaces 21, thereby pushing them away from one another.
This results in a slight radial deformation of the central part of the collar 13 and an expansion of the slot-shaped opening 19. When the nipple 16 is removed from the cuff 13, the cuff takes on its original shape again under the influence of its own elasticity, the opening 19 closing automatically.
That end of the sleeve 13 which has the mouth of the part 13b for the attachment of the nipple 16 is provided with a reinforced peripheral flange 22 which counteracts the expansion of the conical inner surface 18 when the nipple 16 is inserted. Furthermore, the outside of the cuff 13 is provided with several longitudinal ribs 23 which increase the longitudinal flexural rigidity of the cuff and its grip.
The use and operation of the device described is briefly as follows:
The tube 10 is pushed with its one end through the annular sealing lip 15 into the upper part 13 a of the cuff 13 until the tube 10 strikes the membrane 14. Then the device is ready for use. The blood to be examined is taken from the patient with the aid of a conventional blood sampling syringe 17 which has a hollow needle (not shown) on its conical nipple 16. The hollow needle is then removed from the syringe 17 and the conical nipple 16 of the same is immediately inserted into the lower part 13b of the cuff 13 until the nipple 16 is fluid-tight in the conical inner surface 18 of the cuff.
The two inclined surfaces 21 are pushed a little away from each other by the front end of the nipple 16, as a result of which the central part of the sleeve is correspondingly expanded radially and the slot-shaped opening 19 in the membrane 14 is widened somewhat. Then, by actuating the plunger of the syringe 17, blood can be displaced from the same and conveyed through the opened opening 19 into the tube 10, the liquid pressure generated by actuating the plunger in turn deforming the membrane 14 somewhat and expanding the opening 19. When the liquid level of the blood column in the tube 10 has reached the reference mark, you stop operating the plunger and quickly pull the nipple 16 of the syringe 18 out of the cuff 13.
The slot-shaped opening 19 is immediately closed by the elastic effect of the membrane 14 and the cuff 13, so that the blood filled into the device cannot flow out. The device is then held stationary in any desired manner with the tube 10 in an at least approximately vertical position for a predetermined period of time in order to measure the sedimentation rate of the blood cells in a known and customary manner. Holding the device in an upright position can, for. B. by easily plugging the now no longer used lower part 13b of the cuff 13 on a fixed mandrel of a holding device who accomplished the or by inserting the component 12 into a matching vertical hole of a holder.
In a modified embodiment of the component 12, not shown, the two inclined surfaces 21 in the interior of the cuff portion 13b can be absent.
In this case the conical inner surface 18 is continued up to the membrane 14. The insertion of the nipple 16 of a blood sampling syringe 17 in this embodiment does not yet result in the slit-shaped opening 19 being widened. In contrast, when the piston of the syringe 17 is actuated, the opening 19 is opened by the resulting liquid pressure in that the membrane 14 is elastically deformed. As soon as the pressure on the piston is released, the opening 19 in the membrane 14 closes automatically due to the elastic effect of the material. The membrane 14 and its opening 19 thus have the same mode of operation as an automatically closing check valve.
In the last-mentioned embodiment in particular, the opening 19 of the membrane 14 could also be designed differently instead of as a straight slot, e.g. B. as a V-shaped slot, so that under the liquid pressure generated by the syringe 17, an approximately triangular flap bends out of the plane of the remaining membrane 14 in order to allow the blood to flow into the tube 10. There are also several small openings, e.g. B. in the form of needle punctures, useful.
In another embodiment, the tube 10 can be provided with a scale which begins at the reference mark 11 and allows the distance of the blood cells to be drawn off. However, it is also possible to use a tube 10 without a reference mark 11 and to mark the initial level of the blood column either on the tube 10 itself or on another object that is assigned to the tube at the beginning of the actual measurement of the blood sedimentation rate.
The tube 10 does not, of course, have to consist of plastic in every case or even be a conventional drinking straw. Tubes with a larger diameter, made of plastic or glass, can also be used if the sleeve 13 is dimensioned accordingly.
