Method for Bonding Solid Materials The invention relates to a method for bonding solid materials, with the exception of the finishing of textiles, with hotmelt pressure-sensitive adhesives based on copolymers of esters of unsaturated acids.
In the German Offenlegungsschrift 1569 908 and 1569 909, hotmelt adhesives based on styrene and acrylic or methacrylic acid esters and optionally monomers with polar hydrophilic groups are described ben. Without the polar hydrophilic groups in the monomers, these hot-melt adhesives have good heat stability at 180 ° C to 200 ° C, but the shear and peel strengths are too low when the adhesive joint is stressed and, moreover, the cold flow at room temperature is so great that adhesion problems occur In addition, hotmelt adhesives are described which additionally contain polar hydrophilic groups in the monomers.
These hot melt adhesives show good shear and peel strengths when the glue joint is stressed, but the heat stability of the melted hot melt adhesive at 180 C to 200 C in the presence of atmospheric oxygen is only 1 to 4 hours. Such products are unsuitable for commercial exploitation. On the other hand, in order for the products to be commercially usable, the aim is to achieve heat stability of 24 hours at 180 ° C. to 200 ° C., the viscosity having to remain constant or only be allowed to increase slightly.
The present invention was based on the object of providing a method for bonding solid materials, with the exception of the finishing of textiles, which does not have the specified disadvantages or has to a considerably lesser extent, in particular improved shear and peel strengths Bonding supplies.
The invention relates to a method for bonding solid materials, with the exception of the finishing of textiles, by applying molten thermoplastics as hot-melt pressure-sensitive adhesives and allowing the melted thermoplastics to cool in contact with at least one material to be bonded, characterized in that one is used as a hot-melt pressure-sensitive adhesive via copolymers from a) 1-20 wt .-% nitriles of a, ss-ethylenically unsaturated mono- or dicarboxylic acids, individually or in a mixture b) 1-20% by weight of amides of a, ss-ethylenically unsaturated mono- or dicarboxylic acids individually or in the mixture c) 40-97 wt .-% esters of a, ss-ethylenically un saturated mono- or dicarboxylic acids, individually or in a mixture, which contain 4-12 carbon atoms in the alcohol radical and c) 1-30 wt .-% methyl methacrylate, or a reaction product from the copolymer with 0.01 to 1,
0% by weight of formaldehyde or formaldehyde releasers are used.
In the preferred embodiment of the invention, the last-mentioned reaction product is used. The following can be said of the structural components: a) Nitriles of α, β-ethylenically unsaturated mono- or dicarboxylic acids, individually or in a mixture, are: acrylonitrile, methylacrylonitrile, maleic acid dinitrile or fumaric acid dinitrile or the mononitriles of maleic acid or fumaric acid monoesters , wherein the Alko holrest in the monoester is C1 to C18 carbon atoms.
b) As amides of α, ß-ethylenically unsaturated mono- or dicarboxylic acids, individually or as a mixture, there are: acrylamide, methacrylamide, maleic acid diamide or fumaric acid diamide or the monoamides of the maleic acid or fumaric acid monoesters, the alcohol residue in the monoester C1 to C18 carbon atoms.
c) The following esters of α, ß-ethylenically unsaturated mono- or dicarboxylic acids, individually or in a mixture, come into consideration: butyl acrylate, hexyl acrylate, 2-ethylhexyl acrylate, decyl acrylate and dodecyl acrylate or butyl methacrylate, hexyl methacrylate, 2-ethylhexyl methacrylate, decyl methacrylate acrylate and dodecyl methacrylate. Butyl acrylate and 2-ethylhexyl acrylate have proven to be particularly advantageous.
The copolymers used according to the invention are obtained by conventional production methods, such as solvent polymerization, block or graft polymerization, in the presence of polymerization initiators, possibly with the use of chain regulators, by copolymerizing the α, ß-ethylenically unsaturated compounds. The most favorable results are obtained when the copolymerization is carried out in the presence of solvents and then the solvents, such as xylene or butanol, are separated off by distillation.
Peroxides, such as benzoyl peroxide, di-tertiary butyl peroxide, lauryl peroxide or cumene hydroperoxide, are suitable as polymerization initiators.
The copolymers should have a viscosity of 50 to 1000, preferably 100 to 600 Din 6 seconds measured as a 50% solution in xylene at 20.degree.
In the most preferred embodiment, the hotmelt PSA used according to the invention are reaction products of the copolymers with formaldehyde or formaldehyde-releasing compounds (formaldehyde releasing agents).
Paraformaldehyde, hexamethylene tetramine, trioxane and gaseous formaldehyde, which is dissolved in a wide variety of media, come into consideration as formaldehyde-releasing compounds (formaldehyde releasers).
Various media can be considered: e.g. B. plasticizers, vegetable or mineral oils, synthetic resins or natural resins.
In addition, formaldehyde-releasing amino plastics or phenol-formaldehyde resols can be used. Furthermore, masked or alcohol-etherified methylol ether groups containing organic compounds or synthetic resins come into consideration.
The copolymers containing amide groups used according to the invention are well distributed or dissolved in the preferred form for producing the hotmelt pressure-sensitive adhesive with formaldehyde or formaldehyde-releasing substances at room temperature and elevated temperatures of up to 200 ° C. in an appropriate agitator, such as a kneader or mixer.
The best mixture is obtained when paraformaldehyde is added at 100 ° C to 120 ° C with stirring and the mixture is then heated to 180 ° C or higher temperatures up to 220 ° C over a period of up to one hour. This results in an increase in viscosity, but the shelf life over a period of about 12 to 48 hours at 180 ° C to 220 ° C is ensured by selecting the amount of formaldehyde or the addition of formaldehyde releasers.
The higher the initial viscosity of the copolymers, about 500 to 1000 Din 6 seconds, measured as a 50% solution in xylene at 20 ° C., the lower the paraformaldehyde addition, about 0.01 to 0.08% by weight. The cheapest addition is 0.01 to 0.04 0/0.
If the copolymers have lower viscosities, about 50 to 500 Din 6 seconds, measured as a 50% solution in xylene at 20 ° C., the proportion of paraformaldehyde will be 0.03 to 0.2%. The most favorable addition is 0.04 to 0.1% by weight.
If hexamethylene tetramine is used instead of paraformaldehyde, the incorporation is carried out in the same way as when using paraformaldehyde. If the initial viscosity of the copolymers is about 500 to 1000 Din 6 seconds, measured as a 50% solution in xylene at 20 ° C., when hexamethylenetetramine is used, an amount of 0.02 to 0.2% by weight, advantageously 0. 03 to 0.1 wt .-% can be used.
If the copolymers have lower viscosities, about 50 to 500 Din 6 seconds, measured as a 50% solution in xylene at 20 ° C., 0.06 to 0.5% by weight are advantageously used when using hexamethylenetetramine.
Furthermore, trioxane and gaseous formaldehyde, which are dissolved or dispersed in a wide variety of media, such as water, solvents, plasticizers, vegetable or mineral oils, synthetic resins or natural resins, can be used with good results. However, paraformaldehyde and hexamethylenetetramine are advantageously used.
The hotmelt pressure-sensitive adhesives according to the invention have high thermal stability and can therefore be processed at the processing temperatures of about 200 ° C. over a period of 12 to 48 hours without major changes in viscosity. In addition, the hotmelt pressure-sensitive adhesives have a favorable viscosity-temperature dependency; H. the viscosity drops so rapidly with increasing temperature that the liquid melts are easy to process and do not pull threads.
By reacting formaldehyde-releasing substances with the amide group-containing copolymers, a condensation is brought about in the most preferred embodiment, where a slight increase in viscosity occurs, but at temperatures up to 200 ° C., this still leads to liquid and meltable hotmelt PSAs, which are applied to a wide variety of Materials show good adhesion and very good cohesion at room temperature and also at temperatures of 50 to 100 C.
After application to the materials to be bonded, the hotmelt pressure-sensitive adhesives according to the invention produce firmly adhering films which can be adhesive or non-adhesive at room temperature.
Films that can be bonded at room temperature are referred to as self-adhesive hotmelt pressure-sensitive adhesives. Hotmelt pressure-sensitive adhesives, which do not yield sufficient surface tack of the films at room temperature, have to be activated by increasing the temperature.
The most preferred embodiment is the film which is still adhesive at room temperature and has good surface tack.
The hotmelt pressure-sensitive adhesives according to the invention have good adhesion to the usual materials such as wood, leather, paper, metal, glass, lacquered metal surfaces and plastic films. The addition of ester plasticizers for gluing conditions at temperatures from 0 to -f -10 C is advantageous. The incorporation of fillers and extenders, such as barite, chalk and quartz powder up to 50% by weight, has no effect on the strength of the bond.
As materials for gluing, the technically common materials come into question, such as synthetic materials, leather, paper, cardboard, metals, glass or wood. For gluing, the hotmelt pressure-sensitive adhesives are applied to the materials in a thin layer in the molten state in the manner customary for hot-melt pressure-sensitive adhesives and later glued to the other material. For this purpose, the copolymers can be used on their own or mixed with other styrene-acrylic ester or methacrylic ester copolymers as hot-melt adhesive. It is also possible to use them with the usual fillers and pigments, such as chalk, carbon black, barite, kaolin, zinc oxide or calcium oxide, with resins such as balsam resins, rosin esters, ketone resins, phenolic resins or terpene resins, or z.
B. with waxes, such as montan wax, to mix and use Schmel zen of the mixture for gluing.
The processing of the hot melt adhesive according to the invention can be carried out in the usual machines for hot melt adhesives, e.g. B. by application from a heated nozzle (hot casting machine) or via heated rollers success conditions. It is also possible to apply the melted hotmelt pressure sensitive adhesive in a first process step and allow the melt to solidify and est later vorzu gluing at room temperature. Hotmelt pressure-sensitive adhesives that have too little surface tack, such as tack 2-6, can layer by thermal activation of the adhesive obtained, eg. B. in a high frequency field, and can be used by hot pressing for connection.
Compared to known hotmelt PSAs, the copolymers are distinguished by a surprisingly high thermal stability, so that they can be kept in the melt for an entire working day without any visible change. They are insensitive to local overheating. They can be processed by high-frequency gluing. Furthermore, they have a favorable viscosity-temperature dependency, so that the liquid melts are easy to process.
In the preferred embodiment, the hot melt pressure sensitive adhesive is applied to an adhesive material carrier to be bonded. The gluing is carried out later in the cold state by bringing the object to be glued into contact with the adhesive layer, whereby the gluing takes place.
To evaluate the surface tack, a rating from tack 1 to tack 10 was chosen.

The melt viscosities were determined in an Epprecht Rheomat 15 viscometer.
The shear strength was carried out in accordance with DIN 53273, a 5 cm wide polyester film based on terephthalic acid (Hostafan® Kalle film) with a thickness of 0.1 mm being used as the material. The overlap was 5 mm. The separation strength was determined according to DIN 53274, also using polyester film based on terephthalic acid (Hostafan film), 0.1 mm thick, 5 cm wide.
The adhesive was applied to the film in the form of a 50% solution in xylene with a applicator in a wet film thickness of 300 u and after a flash-off time of approx. 6 hours at 50 ° C., which allowed the solvent to escape quantitatively from the film Bonding carried out.
The heat resistance was determined as follows: bitumen board, which contains 50 wt .-% bitumen, was coated with the hot melt adhesive. A 5 cm wide and 15 cm long strip of this cardboard was glued with the coated side to a sheet metal plate at room temperature, so that a glued area of 50 cm 2 was created. After storage for 24 hours at room temperature, the bond was heated to 70 ° C. for 5 minutes and the time in which the bonded strip was separated from the sheet metal at 70 ° C. was determined with the aid of a 50 g weight whose force was 90 C. (see diagram).
