Apparatus for cutting a tube into sections of uniform length
The present invention relates to an apparatus for cutting into segments of given uniform length, a tube while it is formed by helically winding at least one strip of sheet material.
These tubular sections are frequently used to form the wall of containers for various products or cylindrical supports of a sheet material to be wound therein or cylindrical elements for other uses.
The outer layer of the continuous tube frequently contains a repeating pattern which must be precisely centered when the tube is cut. This presupposes that the location of the section is determined with precision in relation to this drawing so that one obtains with certainty an identical drawing on each of the sections.
Until now, a number of different means have been used to obtain these tubular sections.
These means include a reciprocating tool or set of tools, as well as an endless tool-carrying belt.
Although these means have proved to be quite effective in practice, the present invention constitutes an improvement thereof.
Two embodiments of the object of the invention will be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing.
On this drawing:
Fig. 1 is an elevational view showing a coil tube forming machine comprising a first embodiment.
Fig. 2 is a plan view on a larger scale showing the position of the cutting mechanism of FIG. 1 with respect to the part of the mandrel of the machine which carries the formed tube, during cutting.
Fig. 3 is a partial sectional view of the tool cylinder of the device shown in FIG. 2.
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view along IV IV of FIG. 2.
Fig. 4A is a sectional view along IVA-IVA of FIG. 4; and fig. 5, 6 and 7 are respectively an elevational view in partial section, and views in section along VI-VI and VII-VII respectively of FIG. S of a variant.
A winding tube making machine is shown on the right half of FIG. 1. The outer tubular part 11 of a horizontal mandrel 10 surrounds a solid shaft 12. This tubular part 11, which is relatively rigid, is held above the bed 13 of the machine by a clamping support 14.
The shaft 12 is driven by a motor, preferably direct current, via a gearbox (not shown) and a pulley 16 attached to the end of the shaft which protrudes from the support. 14. The tube forming mechanism comprises two vertical rotating drums 17 and 18 disposed on either side of the mandrel. These drums carry a belt 19 wound around the mandrel 10 so as to wind strips 20 and 21 of paper or similar sheet material brought under this belt from reels not shown.
When they leave the winding mechanism, these bands form a tube 22 with helical turns which the belt 19 advances on the mandrel 10 in the direction of the arrow A. The tubular part 11 of this mandrel 10 ends at a location 24 adjacent to the part of this mandrel on which the tube is formed. The part 25 of the shaft which protrudes from this fixed tubular part 11 has an outer diameter which is equal to that of part 11, so that the tube 22 formed on the mandrel is supported by this rotating part 25 as it advances. towards the cutting device 30 associated with the machine and shown on the left half of FIG. 1.
This apparatus 30 (fig. 2 to 6) comprises a guide frame 31 which is arranged on a base 32, is orientable about a vertical axis 33 which intersects the axis 34 of the mandrel 10, as can be seen in the figure. fig. 2, and which is supported on this base 32 by balls 35 or rollers, allowing its angular position to be adjusted on the base 32. In FIGS. 2, 4 and 4A, an endless screw mechanism comprises a screw 36 mounted on a horizontal shaft 37 and meshes with a helical wheel 38 integral with a -vertical shaft 39 whose axis must coincide with the vertical axis 33 angular adjustment:
At its other end, the shaft 37 carries an element 97 of a universal joint, the other element 98 of which is connected to a drive device (not shown).
The latter controls the screw mechanism (36, 38) and adjusts the angle between the horizontal axes of the mandrel 10 and the tool holder 41 to ensure that the cut made by the blade 42 remains constantly in a plane. perpendicular to the axis of this mandrel. This angle can be adjusted automatically by means of a photoelectric cell 65 which controls means (not shown) compensating for the variations which may occur during winding.
The frame 31 serves as a guide for a carriage 40 which carries the blade holder consisting of a cylinder 41 from the surface of which protrudes the helical blade 42. This cylinder rotates on the carriage 40 in two ball bearings 43 and 44. A mechanism with cams adjusts its position and that of its blade relative to the tube 22 by bringing the latter enscontact.avec the latter and by moving it away.
This mechanism comprises a shaft 48 mounted on the frame 31 in bearings 49 and 50 and carrying two cams 51 and 52 of the same shape and dimensions, which have the same orientation and are in contact respectively with rollers 53 and 54 mounted on a spindle 55 which is carried by bearings 57 and 58 arranged on either side of the carriage 40. The ends of helical springs 59 and 60 respectively arranged along the two sides of the frame 31 are fixed on one side to tabs 61 and 62 respectively, starting from the corresponding side of this frame, and on the other side to other lugs 63 and 64 starting from the corresponding sides of the carriage 40. These lugs 61 and 62 of the frame 63 and 64 of the carriage are respectively arranged on straight lines parallel to the longitudinal axis 56 common to the frame and to the carriage.
A fine adjustment of the position of the frame 31 can be made by means of screws 49 'and 50, respectively
The point where the blade 42 cuts can be adjusted, when necessary, so that it constantly coincides with the vertical axis 33, by vertical adjustment of gibs 47 (fig. 4A), by means of screws 47a, relative to the bevelled edges 47b on both sides of the carriage 40. Locking screws 47c serve to fix these gibs in their adjustment position.
The cylinder 41 shown in FIG. 3 comprises a cylindrical casing 66 which can rotate with play on a cylindrical core 67. A helical groove 68 is provided between this casing and this core for balls, the pitch of which corresponds to that of the blade of the casing. This assembly allows this blade to move spontaneously and automatically in the axial direction relative to the core under the effect of winding inaccuracies which must be compensated for. The return of the envelope 66 to its normal position with respect to the core takes place automatically when the winding returns to normal thanks to two compensating helical springs 69 and 70 which are fixed to this envelope and to this core by means of lugs 71, 72, 73 and 74.
The tube 22 formed on the winding part of the machine appears near the location 24 of the mandrel 10 and it is here that any irregularities in the winding of the tube can be observed. The photoelectric device 65 is therefore mounted at this location 24, or in its vicinity, and it comprises a photoelectric cell making it possible to detect the variations in the winding. If variations of this kind occur, the device energizes means which act on the operation of the members controlling the cylinder 41, that is to say the drive members (not shown) which operate respectively through the Cardan joint. (45, 46) and the Cardan joint (97, 98), the camshaft 48 and the shaft 37 which carries the screw 36 of the mechanism 36, 38.
The blade 42 is in contact with the tube to be cut, which turns it. It is shaped so as to perform a bleeding around the entire circumference of this tube and to separate it. For the next cut, it must be returned to its starting position, that is to say it must be rotated in the opposite direction on its axis of the angle from which it turned during the cutting. This return is caused by a helical torsion spring 75 disposed around the pin 37 which carries the cylinder 41, one end 77 of this spring being fixed to the carriage while its other end is fixed to the core 67 of this cylinder.
The blade 42 is of course moved away from the tube while the cylinder returns to its starting position. The distance that this tube advances as the tool is pulled out determines the length of the various sections of the tube.
For each tool, the minimum length of the sections that can be obtained is obviously limited by the time required to return the cylinder to its starting position, this time being a function of the speed at which the tube is manufactured. Continuous cutting of the tube into sections can be obtained by providing two separate tools subject to the required return time for each cylinder.
Figs. 5 to 7 represent another form of realization which compotes a tool 41 'carrying on its outer surface a helical blade 42'. As in the embodiment described above, this cylinder 41 'comprises a cylindrical casing 66' and a core 67 'comprising between them a helical path 68' for balls, the pitch of which corresponds to that of the blade 42 '.
This assembly allows this blade to move relative to the core 67 'under the effect of a control force exerted on the cylinder when the photoelectric device 65 detects irregularities in the winding of the tube 22. However , the embodiment shown in FIGS. 5 to 7 differs from the first in that the cutting mechanism is driven independently
For this purpose, the core 67 'of the cylinder is mounted on a cam shaft 80 carrying at its free end, near the end 41 "of the cylinder, a cam 81 which cooperates with a galei 82 mounted on an element 83 of the frame. The end 84 of the shaft adjacent to this cam 81 rotates in a slide 83 movable in a guide.
86 practiced in element 83.
A tension spring
87, fixed on the one hand to the slide 85 and on the other hand to this element 83, ensures that the cam 81 is continuously in contact with the roller 82.
Balancing springs 89 and 90, aui are fixed on the one hand 'to the casing 66' and on the other hand to the core 67 'of the cylinder 41', are arranged on the other side 41 "'of The second frame member 83 'adjacent to these springs also comprises a guide 86' for a slide 85 'which holds the part 92 of the shaft 80 in a bearing 91.
To ensure better operation, the shaft 80 carries a second cam 81 'near the element 83', which carries a roller 82 '.
A tension spring 87 'mounted between this slide 85' and the element 83 'ensures permanent contact between the cam 81' and the roller 82 '.
If, however, the assembly is light, this second cam 81 and its roller 82 'can be omitted.
The tool, 1 'is driven by a motor (not shown) via a gearbox (also not shown) and a Cardan joint (93, 94) of which the driven element 94 is. attached to the end 95, following part 92, of the shaft 80.
The drive of this shaft 80 and of the tool 41 'is controlled by the photoelectric device 65 which, as in the embodiment described first, reacts to variations in thickness of the material to be wound up to form the tube. 22 and winding irregularities.
