Process for the production of basic azo dyes 1 2 The subject of the main patent is a process for the production of basic azo dyes which are free of sulfonic acid and carboxylic acid groups and the formula

The process is characterized in that a) an azo dye of the formula pelling azo component of the formula

clutch. The dyes obtainable according to the invention are suitable for dyeing or printing tannin cellulose fibers, silk, leather or fully synthetic fibers, such as acetate silk or polyamide fibers, but in particular of polyacrylonitrile or polyvinylidenecyanide containing fibers in lightfast and wetfast tones.

where R is hydrogen or a nonionic substituent, R1 is an aryl radical, R- ″ and R3 are alkyl or aralkyl radicals, R4 and R5 are hydrogen, alkyl or aryl radicals and X is an anion, also have valuable properties.
The new dyes are obtained by adding an amine of the formula II

a) diazotized, on a coupling component of the formula III
EMI0002.0004
coupled and then treated with the radicals R2, R3 and X introducing alkylating agents, or that b) treated with the radicals R2, R3 and X introducing alkylating agents and the amine of the formula IV
EMI0002.0010
couples with an azo component of formula III.
In pursuing this inventive concept, it has now been found that basic azo dyes which are free from sulfonic acid and carboxylic acid groups and have the formula I Procedure a) is particularly useful and generally applicable. In this procedure, in addition to the quaternization, an alkylation of the triazole ring also takes place at the same time. The alkylation is facilitated by adding basic compounds such as soda, sodium acetate, calcium oxide, calcium carbonate, sodium carbonate, magnesium oxide or magnesium carbonate.
Suitable alkylating agents are alkyl or aralkyl halides, haloacetamides, 3-halopropionitriles, halohydrins, alkyl esters of sulfuric acid or alkyl or aryl esters of organic sulfonic acids. Suitable alkylating agents are, for example, methyl chloride, bromide or iodide, ethyl bromide or iodide, propyl bromide or iodide, benzyl chloride or bromide.
Chloracetamide, B-chloropropionitrile, ethylenechlorohydrin, dimethyl sulfate, diethyl sulfate, benzene sulfonic acid methyl ester, p-toluenesulfonic acid ethyl, propyl or butyl ester.
The reaction according to the process with the alkylating agents can be carried out in inert organic solvents at elevated temperature, the quaternary compounds of the formula I often precipitating by themselves and being able to be separated off by simple filtration. As solvents, for example, higher-boiling aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons can be used, and aliphatic or cyclic compounds containing halogen atoms which are stable under the conditions used, such as carbon tetrachloride, tetrachloroethane, chloroform, tetrachlorethylene, mono- and dichlorobenzene. Nitrocarbons, such as nitrobenzene, are also suitable for this purpose.
Ketones such as acetone or methyl ethyl ketone, acid amides such as dimethylformamide or N-methylacetamide, and also alcohols such as methanol or ethanol, glycols or glycol alkyl ethers. In general, the choice of suitable solvent will depend on the solubility and constitution of the azo dye to be quaternized. In some cases it is advantageous to carry out the reaction in an excess of the alkylating agent.
If the quaternized dyes cannot be separated from the solvents by filtration, the solvents used can, for example. remove by distillation, if necessary under reduced pressure, or by what is steam distillation. However, a simple extraction of the water-immiscible solvents with warm water is often sufficient. The purification of the dyes obtainable according to the invention is expediently carried out by dissolving them in water, it being possible for the starting dyes which are insoluble in water to be filtered off.
The cationic dyes of the formula 1 produced can then either be salted out from the aqueous solution, optionally clarified with carbon, or isolated in the form of their double salts with zinc or cadmium halides.
The non-quaternary azo dyes occurring as intermediate products in procedure a) can be prepared by methods known per se, for example by coupling diazotized 3-amino-1-aryl-5-imino-4,5-dihydro-1,2, 4-triazoles of the general formula
EMI0003.0000
with azo components of the formula III.
As 3-amino-1-aryl-5-imino-4,5-dihydro-1,2,4-triazoles of the formula II, for example, the 1-phenyl or 1-naphthyl compounds come into consideration, which may contain nonionic substitutes in the aryl radical - Tuenten, for example halogen atoms, alkyl, aralkyl, alkoxy, nitro, alkylsulfonyl, arylsulfonyl, acylamino or trifluoromethyl groups can contain.
Suitable azo components of the formula III are indole and 2-alkylindoles, 2-arylindoles, 1,2-dialkylindoles, 1-alkyl-2-arylindoles or 1-alkylindoles, the alkyl and aryl radicals and the benzene radical a still being nonionic May contain substituents.
The quaternary amines of the formula IV used for procedure b) can be obtained by treating amines of the formula II with alkylating agents such as alkyl or aralkyl halides or alkyl or aryl esters of sulfuric acid or organic sulfonic acids, conveniently in organic solvents .
The amines of the formula IV are diazotized by methods known per se, for example using hydrochloric acid and sodium nitrite. The coupling with the azo components of the formula III is also carried out in a manner known per se, for example in a neutral or acidic medium, if appropriate in the presence of buffer substances or agents which accelerate the coupling, such as pyridine.
The dyes of the formula I obtained according to the process preferably contain, as anion X, the residue of a strong acid, for example sulfuric acid or its half-ester, an aryl sulfonic acid or a hydrohalic acid. These anions introduced according to the method can also be replaced by anions of other acids, for example phosphoric acid, acetic acid, oxalic acid, lactic acid or tartaric acid. The new dyes are suitable for dyeing or printing tannin cellulose fibers, silk, leather or fully synthetic fibers such as acetate silk, poly amide fibers or acid-modified polyester fibers, but in particular polyacrylonitrile or polyvinylidene cyanide-containing fibers.
The dyeings available on these fibers are usually very clear and strong in color and have very good fastness to light, fulling, over-dyeing, carbonising, chlorine, perspiration, decatur, steaming, ironing, rubbing and solvent fastness .
The dyes are generally largely insensitive to a change in the pH of the dyebath and can therefore be used in both weakly acidic and strongly acidic baths. They are also stable at temperatures above 100 C, as used in high-temperature dyeing. Wool is completely reserved by the dyes under normal dyeing conditions. Example 1 A mixture of 8.8 parts by weight of 3-amino-1-phenyl-5-imino-4,5-dihydro-1,2,4-triazole and 6.5 parts by volume of water is mixed with good 27 parts by weight of 96% strength sulfuric acid are added to the mixture.
A clear solution forms when heated to 60-70 ° C. It is cooled to 0-5 ° C. and diazotized with 7.8 parts by volume of nitrosylsulphuric acid at 5-10 ° C. After 15 minutes, the diazotization melt is poured onto 100 parts by weight of ice and 100 parts by weight of water and a solution of 6.7 parts by weight of 2-methyl- indole in 100 parts by volume of ethyl alcohol to slowly drip. The coupling is complete after about 15 minutes. The sulfate of the dye, which has precipitated in yellow crystals, is filtered off with suction, washed with water and twice with 50 parts by volume of methyl alcohol, the dye is then suspended in 200 parts by volume of water, adjusted to pH 8-9 with sodium hydroxide solution, and after the sulfate has completely decomposed, the free one is sucked off Dye base, washes neutral with water and dries at 60 C.
About 15 parts by weight of the dye of the formula are obtained
EMI0003.0027
as a brownish yellow crystal powder. To convert into the quaternary compound, a mixture of 15 parts by weight of dye, 4 parts by weight of magnesium oxide and 500 parts by volume of chlorobenzene is mixed with 10 parts by volume of dimethyl sulfate at 90 ° C. over the course of 15 minutes and stirred at this temperature for about 15 hours until completely quaternized. The crystals which have precipitated out are then suctioned off while hot, washed with 500 parts by volume of chlorobenzene and dried at 65 C.
27 parts by weight of the dye of the formula are obtained
EMI0004.0000
as a brownish yellow crystal powder, which dissolves in hot water with a yellow color.
1 g of the dye is mixed with 2.5 g of 50% acetic acid and dissolved in 6 liters of water. 1 g of crystalline sodium acetate and 10 g of calcined Glauber's salt are added to the dyebath. Then 100 g of prewashed polyacrylic nitrile staple fiber yarn are placed in the 60 C warm dyebath, the temperature is slowly increased to 100 C and dyed for 1 hour at boiling temperature. It is then left to cool slowly to about 60 ° C., rinsed and dried.
EMI0004.0003

By precipitating the hot aqueous dye solution with sodium chloride or zinc chloride, the chloride or zinc chloride of the dye is obtained.

and 10 parts by weight of anhydrous sodium carbonate who dehydrated the azeotropically in 500 parts by volume of chlorobenzene and stirred for about 5 hours at 100 ° C. with 10 parts by volume of dimethyl sulfate. After the end of the one, a clear yellow coloration with excellent light fastness and very good wet fastness properties is obtained.
Example 2 If the quaternization of the dimethyl sulfate in Example 1 is replaced by 15 parts by weight of diethyl sulfate and the mixture is stirred at 90-100 ° C. until the quaternization is complete, about 15 parts by weight of the dye of the formula <I are obtained after work-up > Example 3 10 parts by weight of the dye prepared according to the information in Example 1 from 8.8 parts by weight of 3-amino-1-phenyl-5-imino-4,5-dihydro-1,2,4-triazole and 10 parts by weight of 1-methyl-2-phenylindole of the formula quaternization, the yellow-brown precipitate is filtered off with suction, washed with hot toluene and dried.
About 31 parts by weight of the dye of the formula are obtained

in the form of yellow-brown crystals that are soluble in hot water.
1 g of the dye is mixed with 2 g of 50% acetic acid and dissolved in 5 liters of water. 1 g of crystalline sodium acetate and 10 g of calcined sodium sulfate are added to the dyebath. Then 100 g of pre-washed material made of acid-modified polyester fibers are filled at 60 ° C. and the temperature is increased

slowly and stains for 1 hour at 120 ° C. It is then cooled to 70 ° C., rinsed and dried. A reddish yellow coloration with good lightfastness and very good wet fastness properties is obtained.
