Process for the preparation of basic azo dyes
The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of new basic azo dyes, in particular those which are free of acidic dissociating, salt-forming groups, such as sulfonic acid or carboxylic acid groups, and presumably the formula
EMI1.1
in which, and R2 is an alkyl or aralkyl radical, R3 and R4 optionally substituted or closed to a ring lower alkyl or aralkyl radicals, Y is a hydrogen or halogen atom, a trifluoromethyl, alkyl, alkoxy, nitro or acylamino group, A is a radical from the benzene or naphthalene series, n is the number 1 or 2 and X- is an anion.
These dyes are obtained by a) an amine of the formula IIa or IIb

introduces the radicals Rt, R2 and X- according to the meaning given, treated, the quaternary amine obtained of the formula
EMI2.1
diazotized and coupled with an azo component of the formula III coupling in the manner indicated.
Procedure a) is particularly useful and generally applicable. According to this procedure, when compounds of the formula IIa are used, the triazole ring is also alkylated at the same time as the quaternization. The alkylation is carried out by adding basic compounds, such as. B.
Soda, sodium acetate, calcium oxide, calcium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, magnesium oxide or magnesium carbonate facilitated.
Suitable alkylating agents are preferably the following compounds with easily split off alkyl groups: alkyl or aralkyl halides, alkyl esters of sulfuric acid or organic sulfonic acids. In some cases, alkylating epoxy compounds or reactive ethylene compounds can also be used.
The reaction with the alkylating agents in accordance with the process can take place in inert organic solvents at elevated temperature, the quaternary compounds of the formula I often precipitating by themselves and being able to be separated off by simple filtration. For example, higher-boiling aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons can be used as solvents, and aliphatic or cyclic compounds containing halogen atoms which are stable under the conditions used, such as carbon tetrachloride, tetrachloroethane, chloroform, tetrachlorethylene, mono- and dichlorobenzene.
Also suitable for this are nitro hydrocarbons, such as nitrobenzene, ketones such as acetone or methyl ethyl ketone, acid amides such as dimethylformamide or N-methylacetamide, and also alcohols such as methanol or ethanol, glycols or glycol alkyl ethers. In general, the choice of the suitable solvent will depend on the solubility and constitution of the azo dye to be quaternized.
In some cases it is advantageous to carry out the reaction in an excess of the alkylating agent. If the quaternized dyes cannot be separated from the solvents by filtration, the solvents used can be removed, for example, by distilling off, if appropriate under reduced pressure, or by steam distillation. However, a simple extraction of the water-immiscible solvents with warm water is often sufficient. The purification of the dyes obtainable according to the invention is expediently carried out by dissolving them in water, it being possible to filter off the starting dyes which are insoluble in water.
The prepared cationic dyes of the formula I can then either be salted out or isolated in the form of their complex salts with zinc or cadmium halides from the aqueous solution, optionally clarified with charcoal.
The dyes of the formula I obtainable according to the invention contain as anion X- preferably the radical of a strong acid, e.g. B. sulfuric acid or its half-esters, an arylsulfonic acid or a hydrohalic acid. These anions introduced according to the method can also be replaced by anions of other acids, for example phosphoric acid, acetic acid, oxalic acid, lactic acid or tartaric acid.
The azo dyes of the formulas IVa and Wb used for procedure a) can be prepared by methods known per se by coupling diazotized 7-aminobenzotriazoles with azo components of the formula III.
Suitable 7-aminobenzotriazoles are 7-aminobenzotriazole itself or 7-amino-1-alkylbenzotriazoles and their benzene ring derivatives substituted by halogen atoms, trifinomethyl, alkyl, alkoxy, nitro or acylamino groups.
According to the process, the azo components of the formula III are in the p-position to

<tb> <SEP> group
<tb> R4
<tb> Coupling benzene-o- or naphthalene compounds use that are free from carboxylic acid and sulfonic acid; groups are. The radicals R3 and R4 can be lower alkyl radicals, e.g. B. methyl, ethyl, propyl or ButylrF ste, which may optionally contain other substituents such as chlorine and fluorine atoms, hydroxy, cyano, phenyl, alkoxy or phenoxy groups. The alkyl groups can optionally also form hydrogenated hetero rings with one another or together with an oxygen or nitrogen atom, such as the piperidine, morpholine or piperazine ring.
The benzene or naphthalene radical A can also contain further substituents such as halogen atoms, alkyl, alkoxy, carbalkoxy, alkylsulfonyl or acylamino groups.
The quaternary amines of the formula V used for procedure b) can be obtained by treating the 7-AmiQo- or 7-Amino-1-alkylbenzotriazoles with alkylating agents, such as alkyl or aralkyl halides, or alkyl or aryl esters of sulfuric acid or organic sulfonic acids , conveniently in organic solvents.
The amines of the formula III are diazotized by methods known per se, for example using hydrochloric acid and sodium nitrite. The coupling with the azo components of the formula IV is also carried out in a manner known per se, for example in a neutral or acidic medium, if appropriate in the presence of buffer substances or agents which accelerate the coupling, such as pyridine.
The new dyes are suitable for dyeing or printing tannin cellulose fibers, silk, leather or fully synthetic fibers such as acetate silk, polyamide fibers or acid-modified polyester fibers, but especially fibers containing polyacrylonitrile or polyvinylidenecyanide. The dyeings available on these fibers are usually very clear and strongly colored and generally have good light and wet fastness properties, in particular good fastness to washing, perspiration, fulling, over-dyeing, hypochlorite bleaching and peroxide bleaching, as well as good ironing, dry heat fixation and decaturation , Solvent and dry cleaning fastness properties. Wool is completely reserved by the dyes under normal dyeing conditions.
The dyes are largely insensitive to a change in the pH of the dyebath and can therefore be used in both weakly acidic and strongly acidic areas.
Example 1 a) 16.9 g of 5-chloro-7-aminobenzotriazole are dissolved in 60 cc of 785 sulfuric acid and diazotized at about 10 ° C. over the course of 15 minutes with 16 cc of 43.5% iron nitrosylsulfuric acid. Stirring is continued for 60 minutes 100 C to 200 C and then add the diazo solution with stirring to a mixture of 400 g of ice and 100 ccm of water. Any small excess nitrite is destroyed by adding a little sulfamic acid. The diazo solution is then clarified by treatment with a little kieselguhr and animal charcoal and stirred into a suspension of 13.5 g of N, N-dimethylaniline in 500 cc of water. The coupling is complete after about 2 hours.
The precipitated dark brown sulfate of the dye formed is then filtered off with suction, washed with a little water and the still moist filter cake is stirred with 500 cc of water. By adding sodium hydroxide solution until the reaction is weakly alkaline, the red dye base is then released, suction filtered, washed neutral with water and dried at 600 ° C. In this way, about 30 g of 5-chloro-7- (4'-dimethylaminophenylazo are obtained ) - 1,2,3-benzotriazole of the formula
EMI3.1
in the form of red crystals.
b) 30 g of the dye thus obtained are stirred with 4 g of magnesium oxide in 400 cc of chlorobenzene and treated with 20 cc of dimethyl sulfate at 120 "C. in the course of about 30 minutes. First a dark red-brown solution is formed, from which, on further stirring, the The quaternized dye separates out in crystalline form in the course of about 3 hours. It is cooled to 10 ° C., the dark crystals are filtered off with suction and dried at 600 ° C. The dye of the presumed formula
EMI3.2
With a red color, it dissolves very easily in water or dilute acetic acid.
To produce dyeings, 1 g of the dye thus obtained is mixed with 2 g of 50% acetic acid and dissolved in 5 l of water. 100 g of washed polyacrylonitrile staple fiber yarn are then placed in the dyebath at 60.degree. C., the temperature is slowly increased to 1000.degree. C. and dyed for one hour at boiling temperature. It is then allowed to cool slowly to about 700 ° C., rinsed and dried. This gives a strong, clear borders to red-violet coloration with very good light and wet fastness properties.
Example 2 a) 16.9 g of 5-chloro-7-aminobenzotriazole are diazotized according to the information in Example la and coupled with 17 g of 3-methyl-N, N-diethylaniline. In this way, about 32 g of the dye of the formula are obtained
EMI4.1
in the form of brownish-red crystals.
b) 32 g of the dye thus obtained are made into a paste in 300 cc of chlorobenzene together with 4 g of magnesium oxide and 20 cc of dimethyl sulfate are added at 1200 ° C. to 1300 ° C. in the course of 30 minutes.
First a dark solution forms from which the quaternized dye separates out in the form of greasy crystals. After the quaternization has ended, the chlorobenzene is driven off with steam, the aqueous solution is filtered with a little animal charcoal and the zinc chloride complex salt of the dye cation of the presumed formula is then precipitated
EMI4.2
by adding 20 ccm of the above zinc chloride solution and 150 g of sodium chloride. After drying, 47 g of the dye of the above constitution are obtained in the form of dark crystals which dissolve very easily in water with a red color.
To produce prints, 20 g of the dye thus obtained are dissolved in hot water with 50 g of ss, fl'-dihydroxydiethyl sulfide, 30 g of cyclohexanol, 50 g of 30/0 acetic acid and 400 g of water and stirred into 450 g of crystal rubber thickening 1:20. A fabric made of polyacrylonitrile staple fiber is printed with this printing ink. The pressure obtained is dried, steamed for 30 minutes at 0.7 atmospheres, soaped at 50 ° C. with 1 g of a condensation product of oleic acid and methyl taurine per liter of water and finished as usual.
In this way, a well-fixed, strong, violet print with good fastness properties is obtained.
Example 3
14.4 g of 1,3,5-trimethyl-7-aminobenztriazolium methyl sulfate are dissolved in 100 cc of 5N hydrochloric acid and 40 g of ice and diazotized by rapidly adding 10 cc of 5N sodium nitrite solution. Stirring is continued for about 5 minutes, any small excess of nitrite is destroyed by adding a little sulfamic acid and the brown diazo solution is added to a solution of 6 g of N, N-dimethylaniline in 10 com 5N hydrochloric acid and 20 ccm of water. When blunting with sodium acetate solution, the coupling takes place with the formation of a red dye solution.
After the coupling has ended, the zinc chloride complex salt of the dye cation of the formula is precipitated by adding 10 cc of the above zinc: chloride solution and 10 g of sodium chloride
EMI4.3
in animal-dark bordo-colored crystals, which are suctioned off and dried at 60 C. This gives about 23 g of a dye contaminated with a little sodium chloride, which dissolves very easily in water or dilute acetic acid and dyes polyacrylonitrile fibers in red shades with good fastness properties.
If, in the above example, 15.1 g of 1-ethyl-3,5-dimethyl-7-aminobenzotriazolium methyl sulfate are used instead of 14.4 g of 1,3,5-trimethyl-7-aminobenztriazolium methyl sulfate, about 22 g are obtained of the zinc chloride complex salt of the dye cation of the putative formula
EMI4.4
the polyacrylonitrile fibers from acetic acid bath also dyes in red shades with good fastness properties.
