New York, 1955, be schriebenen bestimmt.

As indicated above, the presence of additional elements in the material can sometimes have a beneficial effect.
For certain applications it is desirable that the ferromagnetic transition occurs at low temperature over a small temperature interval and causes a large change in the saturation induction. The temperature range over which the transition occurs is of course affected by changes in the composition of the magnetic phase and can be adjusted to suit a particular device. The most useful materials have a saturation induction below the lower ferromagnetic temperature which is no more than about 1/10 of the maximum saturation induction above this temperature.
For many devices, a material that exhibits a very sharp increase in saturation induction is desired. The temperature range over which the increase in saturation induction occurs can easily be reduced to the minimum level by producing the material in single crystal form or by quenching and tempering it. as described in U.S. Patent No. 3,196,055. This method comprises quenching the molten material to a temperature below its solidification temperature, annealing it at a higher temperature below the solidification temperature, and slowly cooling it.
If desired, a reagent capable of reacting with chalcogens, e.g. B. aluminum to be set.
Said materials can be produced by heating mixtures of the elements or compounds and alloys thereof to a temperature in the range from 600 to 1500 ° C. or more. For manganese-chromium and / or vanadium antimonides, temperatures from 600 to 1050 ° C. or preferably from 700 to 975 ° C. are usually used. Temperatures of at least 850 ° C. are generally required. when the material is to be melted.
The preparation of a typical material useful in the devices according to the invention is described in the following steps.
A. An intimate mixture of manganese, chromium, ir dium and antimony (55.5, 11.1, 16.7 and 16.7 atom percent respectively) in finely divided form was placed in an Ouarzrol, which was then evacuated and melted shut. The tube was placed in an oven at 910 C and held at that temperature for 22 hours. The quartz tube was then removed from the furnace, quickly cooled in air, and opened. The product was a metallic-looking lump which had a maximum saturation induction and upper (Curie point) and lower ferromagnetic transition temperatures of 238 ° C. and = 20 ° C. at 62 ° C.
For cleaning, a portion of the lump was ground in an agate mortar and treated with two batches of 20 wt% aqueous tartaric acid, followed by treatment with a solution of 0.5 wt% picric acid and 3 volume percent concentrated hydrochloric acid in absolute ethanol . After each of these treatments, the dried solid substance was moved in a magnetic field in order to separate magnetic from non-magnetic material. The purified product gave the following X-ray diffraction diagram (after subtraction of weak reflections which were caused by the presence of traces of antimony, indium and indium antimonide).
Lattice level spacings are given in ngstrom units (). The relative intensities are designated as follows: S denotes the strongest registered line; M ,, 1I1 and XI, are lines of medium intensity with progressively decreasing intensity; F means the line is weak; VF and VVF mean very weak or extremely weak.

B. A second sample was prepared as described above using a heating cycle of 20 hours at 920 to 925 '-C. This sample exhibited maximum saturation induction at 58'C and had a Curie temperature of 243 to 246 C. After cleaning by extraction in succession with picric acid-concentrated hydrochloric acid in ethanol and with 5% aqueous sulfuric acid and by magnetic separations, the magnetic properties determined in a field of 2000 Örsted. The saturation per gram, 08, was over 20 Gauss cm3 / g at 65 C. The induction coercive force, @j, was 127 Örsted at 2.5'C and 166 Örsted at 31C.
The chemical analysis of the purified product gave the following results (expressed in percent by weight): Sb 41.47, In 14.01, Mn 38.70 and Cr 0.84 0.89. This analysis corresponds to Mn1.53, Cr0.40, In0.26, Sb0.74. Other elements proven to be present were O (by direct analysis) 1.49%, Pb 0.2-1.0%, Sn 0.2-1.0%, Cu 200-1000 parts per million, Ni 300 up to 500 parts per million and Si 100 to 500 parts per million.
C. A third sample was made using a 6 hour heating cycle at 800-820C. Single crystals were isolated by cleaving them from the lump product obtained from the reaction. These crystals exhibited a maximum saturation induction at 70 ° C. and at this temperature had a saturation per gram, a ,, of 26 Gauss cm3 / g, measured in a field of 14,400 Örsted. The magnetization in the above field versus the temperature was the same, regardless of whether the crystals with the cleavage planes were oriented at right angles or parallel to the field, and showed no thermal hysteresis. The change in magnetization with temperature in the range of the lower ferromagnetic transition temperature was very rapid.
In the foregoing reference is made to two magnetic properties that are important for the technical usability of the materials, namely the induction coercive force, H @ i, and the saturation per gram or the sigma value, os. The definition of inductive coercive force is given in American Society for Testing Materials Special Technical Publication No. 85 entitled Symposium on Magnetic Testing (1948), pages 191-198. The values of the induction coercive force given in this description are determined with a ballistic galvanometer; this is a modified form of the apparatus described by Davis and Hartenheim in Review of Scientific Instruments, 7, 147 (1936).
The sigma value, ay, is defined on pages 7 and 8 in Bozorth, Ferromagnetism, Van Nostrand Co., New York, 1951. This sigma value is equal to the magnetization strength, I @. divided by the density, d, of the material. The sigma values reported in this specification are determined on an apparatus similar to that described by T. R. Bardell on pages 226-228 in Magnetic Materials in the Electric Industry, Philosophical Library, New York, 1955.
Properties of the materials The ferromagnetic materials described are characterized by a sharp and reversible increase in the saturation induction with the increase in temperature at a temperature below the Curie point. The temperature at which this increase occurs is often referred to as the lower ferromagnetic transition temperature to distinguish it from the upper transition temperature or the Curie point.
The unusual dependence of the magnetization on the temperature at the lower transition temperature results, as one assumes, from a transition from an antiferromagnetic state to a ferromagnetic state. Accordingly, it is assumed that at the transition temperature the entire quantum mechanical exchange between neighboring sublattices changes its sign, and it is further assumed that this exchange inversion is the basis for the observed change in the magnetic properties.
The transition is a transition of the first order from solid phase to solid phase while maintaining crystal symmetry, and any magnetic material which exhibits such a transition can be used in accordance with the invention.
In addition to the increase in saturation induction with the increase in temperature at the temperature of exchange inversion, the materials exhibit changes in other properties that can be used as the basis for the operation of the devices. Preferably the saturation induction increases at least five times and more preferably at least ten times. At the same time, the specific electrical resistance changes by at least 10%, preferably 20 01o, and the crystal dimensions by at least 0.1%, preferably 0.2%. Other properties change in a corresponding manner at the temperature of the exchange inversion.
For explanation, representative properties are discussed below for manganese-chromium and manganese-vanadium antimonides at different temperatures. As indicated above, these Ma materials can, if desired, additional elements, e.g. B. indium included.
For materials that have an exchange inversion above approx. -70 C in a field-free space or in a very low magnetic field, a direct transition from a ferrimagnetic state to an antiferromagnetic state occurs when they cool down. It has been found, however, that materials which have exchange inversion at a lower temperature have an intermediate state, and at sufficiently low temperatures, i. H. below approx. -170 C, only the transition between the ferromagnetic state and this intermediate state is observed.
All transitions between the three states are first order transitions in the thermodynamic sense. Although the nature of the intermediate state is not fully understood, the magnetic structure in this state is different from the structure in the above-mentioned antiferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic states.
The manganese-chromium and manganese-vanadium antimonides which can be used for magnetic components in devices according to the invention have a tetragonal crystal structure of the Cu2Sb type. The symmetry of this structure remains unchanged when the materials are heated or cooled while passing through the lower transition or exchange inversion temperature. Of course, other structures, such as e.g. B. MnSb and unreacted components, also be present, but it is desirable for many applications that such contaminating structures are practically absent.
On the other hand, the tetragonal material with other substances such. B. plastics or substances with conventional magnetic properties, combined to achieve a desired result. For example, through combination with a magnetic substance that has the conventional dependence of the magnetic properties on the temperature, composite materials with extremely new magnetic behavior can be obtained, as will be described more fully below.
The manganese-chromium and manganese-vanadium antimony have cleavage planes at right angles to the c-axis and usually have Curie temperatures in the range from 180 to 300 C. The materials usually melt at about 900 C or higher and have be @ Room temperature densities in the range of 7.0 bi: 7.2 g / cm3. Some materials show thermal hysteresis on transition; H. the transition occurs at a higher temperature when approaching it before a temperature below the transition temperature than when approaching it from a temperature above the transition temperature.
This hy steresis, which varies from less than 1 C for materials with low hysteresis to 20 C or more for some products, can be desirable under certain circumstances. However, if the temperature hysteresis is large enough to interfere with the proper operation of a device, the hysteresis can usually be reduced to an acceptable level by increasing the applied magnetic field at an appropriate stage in the hysteresis cycle. Other properties of certain manganese-chromium and manganese-vanadium antimonides are tabulated below.

6 Calculated using the Clausius-Cla- peyron relationship from the field coefficients and the change in magnetization during exchange inversion. The calculated values agree with the values determined by direct calorimetric measurement. Composite components In certain devices according to the invention, a composite magnetic component is used which is composed of a magnetic material of the type described above (1st element) in combination with a magnetic material of the usual type, namely a material whose magnetizability decreases monotonically below half the Curie point with increasing temperature and is 0 at higher temperatures (2nd element).
Through a suitable choice of these ele ments, composite magnetic components can be constructed that have a pronounced maximum of saturation induction in a narrow temperature range and a much lower induction at both lower and higher temperatures. Compound components can also be constructed whose saturation induction is a minimum within a narrow temperature range or is practically constant within a desired temperature range.
The following example illustrates the direct mutual conversion of thermal and mechanical energy into one another in a device based on a component made of a material with exchange inversion. In this device, a magnetic component made of a single crystal in the shape of a parallelepiped with edges of 5.08 to 7.62 mm was used. One side of the parallelepiped was heavily polished and a small V-shaped notch was made in the opposite side. The parallelepiped was placed on the bottom of a quartz tube with the V-shaped notch side up, and a quartz rod was vertically attached so that its lower end engaged with the notch.
The rod was free to move vertically, and the top of the rod set the core of a differential transformer in motion. The transformer windings were mounted on the top of the quartz tube so that the output of the transformer indicated the relative movement between rod and tube. By calibrating with precision measuring blocks it was found that even movements of the rod as small as 2.54 X 10-4 mm could be determined. In operation, the lower end of the quartz tube, which contained the magnetic component, was heated or cooled at a rate of approx. 1 C / minute, and the mechanical movement of the quartz rod produced by the thermal expansion or contraction of the component was @ through the output of the differential transformer ang @ shows.
The drawing shows the relationship between the temperature of the component and the movement of the rod b temperatures in the vicinity of the temperature of the exchange inversion for devices in which the movement of the rod changes the dimension parallel to the crystallographic a and c -Directions of the magnetic component from a Manga @ chromium antimonide with the composition 65.5 atom percent, 1.7 atom percent Cr and 32.8 atom percent Sb can be ascribed. It is obvious that the movement of the rod can be used for temperature display when using the device described and that a conversion into a device for temperature control can easily be brought about.
By thermostating the material with exchange inversion, such devices can be modified for use to determine the direction of the magnetic field strength.
