Steel engraving printing plate The invention relates to a steel engraving printing plate with engraving pits for single or multi-color steel engraving printing machines.
In the steel engraving printing process, the printing plate fastened on a rotating plate cylinder, wel che is provided with engraved engraved pits of generally different depths forming the printing pattern, is colored by inking devices with at least one color.
Since the previously known printing plates also take on color on their non-printing surface outside the engraving pits, all known steel engraving printing machines work with a wiping device arranged behind the inking devices, through which the printing plate on its non-printing surface outside the color-filled engraving pits carefully from the excess Adhering paint is cleaned so that only the paint remaining in the pits is then transferred to the paper. This color transfer to the paper takes place with the help of a printing cylinder that presses the paper firmly against the printing plate.
These wiping devices consist of one or more wiping tapes or at least one wiping cylinder in single-color steel engraving printing, while in multi-color steel engraving printing at least one wiping cylinder has to be used. This wiping cylinder must be constantly cleaned of the ink lifted from the printing plate by means of a suitable solvent and suitable mechanical elements such as squeegees, brushes or the like during operation, since the wiping cylinder surface which is again in contact with the printing plates is always clean.
Apart from the effort that the previously required wiping devices as well as the devices required to clean the wiping cylinder mean, a fairly large amount of color waste has to be accepted in steel engraving, since more or less large areas of the not in each Weil's inking The printing plate surface receives color, which must then be removed again by wiping. Since steel engraving inks are expensive, the uneconomical use of the inks is a major factor.
Ink saving devices are already known, by means of which part of the ink removed from the printing plate surface is fed to a collecting container, but this partial ink recovery is generally only worthwhile in single-color steel engraving printing machines, where this color is not mixed with other colors, and this ink must also suitable treatment for reuse. Furthermore, color saving devices mean an additional effort.
In offset printing, it is known to use chemically etched printing plates, on the surface of which a dampening agent is applied during the operation of the offset printing machine in such a way that only the etched areas of this plate take on color during the subsequent inking of the plate, while the non-printing, A surface provided with a dampening solution has an ink-repellent effect. In offset printing, as in flat or letterpress printing, the colored areas of color are only formed from a very thin, uniform color film, and the color used is relatively fluid, so that only two-dimensional prints without any color profiles can be produced using this printing process.
In contrast, the steel engraving printing process allows the production of three-dimensional print images, d., Because of the printing plate provided with engraving pits, the original of which is generally engraved by an artist by hand. H. the generation of real color profiles with different heights determined by the depth of the engraving pits, which enables complex and nuanced reproductions that no other printing process can produce. In contrast to the inks used in other printing processes, the steel engraving printing ink is relatively thick and viscous.
Because of these special peculiarities of the steel engraving printing process, the professional world has apparently never considered applying the measures known in offset printing, known for the selective coloring of the etched areas of an offset printing plate, in any way to the steel engraving printing process, which previously involved wiping clean the non-printing plate surface after inking was deemed absolutely necessary.
The invention is based on the object of creating a steel engraving printing plate which can be operated with the associated cleaning devices with practically no loss of printing ink and without the need for a wiping device, so that this steel engraving printing plate simplifies the steel engraving printing process and significantly increases its economic efficiency .
Starting from a steel engraving printing plate, as described at the beginning, the invention for solving this problem is characterized in that the wall areas of the printing plate forming the stitch pits are made of a first material with ink-accepting properties and the non-printing surface of the printing plate outside the stitch pits is made of one second, ink-repellent and dampening solution-accepting material.
The method of operating the printing plate according to the invention; in a single or multi-color steel engraving printing machine is characterized in that an ink-repellent dampening solution is applied to the non-printing surface of the printing plate attached to the rotating plate cylinder before inking with one or more colors.
A method for producing the steel engraving printing plate according to the invention is characterized in that a printing plate provided with the desired engraving pits is assumed, the entire outer surface of which, including the non-printing surface and the engraving pits, consists of the first material, including the engraving pits a filler material on which the second material does not precipitate, are filled, then a layer of the second material is deposited on the surface of the printing plate prepared in this way and then the filler material is removed from the pits.
The depths of the engraving pits of the printing plate can be between 0.01 and 0.12 mm, optionally also 0.2 mm, so that prints with color reliefs are possible with the steel engraving printing plate according to the invention, the height of which can vary within wide limits and in particular also include the color relief heights typical for conventional steel engraving. The printing ink that is used preferably has a color quality and a color viscosity between that used in lithography and that used in conventional steel engraving, and is therefore suitably somewhat less viscous than conventional steel engraving printing ink.
The invention is explained in more detail with reference to the drawing using an example. The figures show: FIG. 1 a schematic view of a ROTATIORS steel printing plate operating with a steel engraving printing plate according to the invention, and FIG. 2 a greatly enlarged cross section through part of a steel engraving printing plate.
According to Fig. 1, a steel engraving printing plate 1 is attached to the plate cylinder 2 rotating in the direction of the arrow, the engraving pits of which are ink-accepting and the non-printing surface outside the engraving pits consists of a material or is treated such that this surface is ink-repellent. In the example under consideration, the surface is designed in such a way that it accepts a fertilizer, for example a dampening solution known from fruit offset printing.
A device A is used to apply dampening water to the printing plate 1 and consists of a dampening water bath 3, which is fed from a Vorratsbe container 4, a plunging into the bath 3 capillary roller 5, a flexible transfer roller 6, a matt chrome roller 7 and an application roller 8, e.g. B. with a resilient Molleton- Ver cladding, which dampens the printing plate 1 directly.
By means of a downstream inking device B, consisting of an inking unit 9, a ductor roller 10, several transfer and distribution rollers and an inking roller 11 rolling against the printing plate 1, the pits of the printing plate 1 are filled with ink, while the ano-dampened surface of the printing plate 1 Color repulsion: nd is and therefore does not accept any color.
The inking device is preferably designed in such a way that the ink film thickness on the roller 11 is never less than the depth of the deepest stitch pits of the printing plate, so that the stitch pits are completely filled with color.
The ink can be of any known type; it is only necessary to ensure that the dampening solution does not have any harmful effects on the ink and that good print quality is achieved if the ink is used at temperatures which are compatible with the operating conditions in the Machine no or only a sufficiently low evaporation of the dampening means or no effects impairing the good function of the dampening solution result.
The quality and the viscosity of the ink are suitably between the ink type used in lithography and the usual steel engraving ink and are suitably somewhat less viscous than these. In general, the viscosity of the ink used should be greater, the deeper the pits of the printing plate are.
After coloring, it is no longer necessary to wipe the printing plate. The printing of the paper is carried out in the usual way by means of the printing cylinder 12, which has, for example, only half the diameter of the plate cylinder 1 and with a pressure of at least one ton per inch of contact line against the paper for proper transfer of the color from the stitch pits the pressure plate presses.
According to FIG. 2, the steel engraving printing plate 1 consists of a brass sheet 14 which, for example, has a thickness of 0.3 mm. This sheet has stitch pits 15 and is provided on its top with a chrome layer 16, which has a thickness of, for example, 5 microns. The plate 1 is firmly clamped on the plate cylinder 2. The stitch pits 15 are produced in the usual way. In the finished printing plate 1, the cover layer 16 made of chrome is ink-repellent and dampening agent-accepting, while the stitch pits delimited by the material of the brass plate 14 are ink-accepting.
On the other hand, the printing plate 1 can also be produced according to the following new process: One starts with a conventional steel engraving printing plate, preferably made of copper, which has the desired engraving holes, then fills the engraving holes with a filler material that does not accept metallic deposits a chrome plating on the plate surface, whereby only the non-printing surface areas between the filled pits are covered with chrome, and finally removes the filler material with the help of a suitable solvent that does not attack the chrome, or by chemical and / or mechanical treatment.
Ge suitable filler materials are known and can for example consist of a synthetic resin or a special wax that may contain various additives, including BaSOa, PbO and turpentine.
In addition to copper, copper alloys, brass or steel, any other metals or other substances that have color-accepting properties or have been made ink-accepting by a suitable treatment and which have sufficient strength can be used as the material for the actual pressure plate having the stitch pits to have.
As a material for the top layer, all sufficiently solid substances can be used, which are ink-repellent or dampening agent-accepting or which have these Eiacnschaft due to a suitable treatment. This color-repelling cover layer is expediently composed of zinc, aluminum, in particular aluminum applied by anodizing, nickel or preferably white of chromium in the unpolished, matted state.
The engraving pits of the printing plate can be produced by all known methods and have depths in the range from about 0.01 to about 0.2 mm, preferably 0.025 to 0.12 mm. The composition of the drinking water, in particular additives to achieve a desired surface tension and evaporability, its temperature and the surface properties of the dampening roller, in particular its absorption capacity and its compressibility, can be selected in connection with its contact pressure in such a way that, taking into account the quality ,
The viscosity and temperature of the ink and the contact pressure of the inking rollers cover the non-printing surface of the printing plate with a sufficient film of dampening water, the amount of which is generally greater and its surface tension, vaporizability and temperature the lower The higher the contact pressure of the dampening roller or the inking roller is selected.
If necessary, it may be useful to provide a freely rotatable, flexible distributor roller between the inking device B and the printing cylinder 12, which additionally presses the ink into the pits by rolling against the printing plate.
The steel engraving printing machine can be a single-color or multi-color printing machine, with either the entire printing plate or only parts of it being colored. In the case of a multicolor printing machine, as usual, a number of inking devices corresponding to the number of different colors are provided, which successively inking the printing plate with a specific color in each case on provided areas.
For this purpose, the inking rollers <B> 11 </B> consist of selection rollers, as they are used in conventional steel engraving, or it can be, as suggested by the same patent holder, to support rollers with adjustable clichés made of metal or plastic, which are preferably held on the carrier rollers by magnetic attraction.
