Abstract

1283239 Printing surfaces; etching DE LA RUE GIORI SA 12 Dec 1969 [12 Dec 1968 12 May 1969 14 Nov 1969] 60822/69 Headings B6C and B6J An intaglio printing plate 2, which may be of nickel, or of brass or steel, and has depressions 3, is provided with a coating of, e.g. copper in the depressions and a surface layer of ink-repellent metal such as chromium on the lands between the depressions 3. The depressions 3 are filled with a material 5 which is not receptive to chromium and chromium is plated either on to the copper on the lands or, after removal of the unprotected copper, directly on to the nickel plate. Then the filler is removed. The filler material may be a mixture of wax and inorganic material, and may be sintered before the chromium is applied. Suitable filler materials may include barium sulphate, alumina, or acrylic powder or polyvinyl chloride with polyurethane, and may be removed with trichloroethylene or with cyclohexanone and methyl ethyl ketone.
