Beispiel I
Bariumsulfat 60 g
Carnaubawachs 20 g
Blauöl 1 Tropfen
Terpentin 20 g
Arochlor (Handelsbezeichnung) 20 g
Process for the production of a steel printing plate
The main patent relates to a process for the production of a steel engraving printing plate for use in a steel engraving printing machine that works without wiping devices, in which the wall areas forming the engraving pits are made of a first material with ink-accepting properties and the non-printing surface outside the engraving pits consists of a second, ink-repellent and dampening agent-accepting material.
This method according to the main patent is characterized in that it is based on a printing plate provided with the desired stitch pits, the entire outer surface of which, including the non-printing surface and the stitch pits, consists of the first material, the stitch pits with a filler material on which the second Material does not precipitate, are filled, then a layer of the second material is deposited on the surface of the printing plate prepared in this way and then the filler material is removed from the pits. In this way, a steel engraving printing plate is obtained whose pits accept ink and whose non-printing surface outside the pits is ink-repellent.
A steel engraving printing machine equipped with such a printing plate, which has a printing cylinder that presses the paper to be printed against the printing plate, and at least one inking device for inking the printing plate with at least one color, works without a conventional wiping device, with one in front of the inking device arranged device for applying an ink-repellent dampening solution to the surface of the printing plate.
This dampening solution then only covers the non-printing surface of the steel printing plate, while the engraving pits remain free of dampening solution and take on the color when inking. In contrast, the dampening solution film prevents the non-printing plate surface from accepting ink.
The present invention is based on the object of improving the method according to the main patent.
For this purpose, the invention, based on the above-mentioned method according to the main patent, is characterized in that the filling material consists of a paste that can be spread in the application state, with which the surface of the printing plate is covered by filling the pits, and that then by wiping the The non-printing surface of the printing plate outside the pits is cleaned of this paste before the dampening agent-accepting layer is deposited.
The paste preferably contains a thermoplastic mass and is solidified by heating after it has been applied to the printing plate. The paste also expediently contains carnauba wax and at least one solvent and pigments.
The method according to the invention is explained in more detail with reference to the drawings using an implementation example.
1 to 5 show schematic sections through a steel engraving printing plate, in each case after completion of the main process steps.
According to FIG. 1, in which the treated printing plate is designated as a whole with 1, a nickel plate 17 is assumed which is provided with engraved engraving pits 15 and has, for example, the steel engraving printing pattern for a bank note. Starting from an engraved original, the plate 17 can be produced, for example, by means of a conventional electroforming process. A thin copper layer 22 with a thickness of 0.002 mm, for example, is then applied to the surface of the plate 17 by vapor deposition in a vacuum and then a very thin zinc layer 23 by briefly immersing it in an electrolytic zinc bath.
The plate 27 is then curved and clamped on a rotatable device in such a way that the curved plate already has the shape required later for fastening on the plate cylinder of the printing machine.
A filling material 24 in the form of a spreadable paste is now distributed on the surface of the plate 17 by means of a roller, which is preferably a conventional inking roller for steel engraving printing plates, in such a way that all the stitch pits 15 are completely filled. Advantageous compositions of this paste, which suitably contains a thermoplastic compound with a high melting point, in particular a suitable wax, a solvent and finely divided inorganic constituents, including preferably pigments or dyes, are given later.
Subsequently, the surface of the plate 17 outside the stitch pits 15 is cleaned of filler material by wiping with cleaning rollers or mopping belts, which then only remains in the stitch pits 15 (FIG. 2). It is expedient to first scrape off the bulk of the filler material 24 from the plate surface using a doctor blade and then wipe the surface clean with a roller that has a polyvinyl chloride surface. This roller can be immersed in a tub filled with water so that on the one hand the roller is constantly cleaned and on the other hand the surface to be cleaned is moistened to accelerate the cleaning process.
The contact pressure of the cleaning roller is selected in such a way that, although the plate surface outside the stitch pits is rubbed completely clean, no filler material is removed from the stitch pits 15. The plate 17 is then heated to such an extent that the filler material hardens in the pits 15 and, in particular, sintered together to form a solid mass by melting the inorganic components, while the solvent evaporates at the same time. After the plate has cooled down, the plate surface is polished with a fairly coarse-grained abrasive powder so that any remaining traces of the filler material are completely removed from the plate surface.
The plate is then removed from the rotating jig and briefly treated with dilute nitric acid in order to remove the zinc layer 23 from the surface, which then only remains in the pits protected by the filler material 24 (FIG. 3).
The washed and dried plate 17 is then immersed in an electrolytic chromium bath and provided with a chromium layer 16 which, for example, has a thickness of approximately 0.005 mm (FIG. 4). The plate 17, which is again fastened to a clamping device, is then treated with trichlorethylene vapor so that the filler material is released from the pits 15. Using highly diluted nitric acid or a dilute etching solution, the zinc layer 23, which still covers the pits 15, is finally removed, so that the originally applied copper layer 22 is now exposed in the pits (Fig. 5), while the later non-printing surface of the plate 17 is outside the pits is covered with the chromium layer 16.
The copper 22 in the stitch pits has ink-accepting properties, while the chrome 16 on the plate surface has dampening-solution-accepting properties, so that this non-printing surface can be made ink-repellent during printing.
An essential point of the manufacturing process is the complete cleaning of the plate surface before the application of the color-repellent or dampening agent-accepting chrome layer. In order to facilitate the visual inspection of the board surface for absolute cleanliness from all traces of filler material, a zinc layer 23 was applied to the copper layer 22 as an intermediate layer in the implementation example described, since a zinc layer contrasts particularly well with the copper 22 underneath.
If, therefore, after the described cleaning of the plate surface from the filler material 24, small traces of contamination of the filler material still remain on the plate surface, then these traces will be clearly visible after the filler material has hardened and the zinc layer has been removed from the plate surface using dilute nitric acid, as nitric acid only the zinc dissolves, but neither attacks the underlying copper layer nor the hardened filler material 24. Those zinc spots then remain on the plate surface outside the stitch pits 15 which bear the not yet removed traces of filling material. These now clearly visible traces of contamination must then be removed by a special cleaning process before the plate 17 is treated further, as described.
It should be noted that the application of an intermediate layer of zinc or a similar material that contrasts well with the copper layer and can be removed without attacking the copper layer and the hardened filler material is not absolutely necessary, but can only serve to facilitate the visual inspection To facilitate the cleanliness of the plate surface, in particular the application of such an intermediate layer is unnecessary if one chooses the following second embodiment of the method according to the invention: A nickel plate 17 provided with pits is treated as described in the first embodiment, but without the application of the zinc layer 23, up to the step illustrated by FIG. 3, after which the filler material is removed from the plate surface and the filler material remaining in the pits has hardened.
Before the chrome layer is applied to the plate surface, as described with reference to FIG. 4, the copper layer 22 is removed from the plate surface outside the pits protected by the filler material, so that the chrome layer 16 is then applied directly to the nickel material of the plate. The advantage of this embodiment is that all problems associated with a possible irregularity in the copper layer thickness when applying the chromium layer are avoided. The complete elimination of the copper layer on the plate surface provides an absolutely clean nickel surface that can be chrome plated well and the process is more economical as there is no zinc cladding.
In a third embodiment of the method according to the invention using a zinc layer 23, the procedure can also be such that this zinc layer remains in the stitch pits after the filler material 24 has been removed from the pit (FIG. 4).
In this case, the zinc gives the pits ink-accepting properties. Any small inorganic particles of the filler material remaining in the pits are then removed from the pits together with the steel engraving ink during the first printing process and transferred to the paper to be printed. In this case, the first printed copies would be scrap material.
Some advantageous compositions for the filler material 24 are given below:
Example I.
Barium sulfate 60 g
Carnauba wax 20 g
Blue oil 1 drop
Turpentine 20 g
Arochlor (trade name) 20 g
Blue oil, also called blue lacquer, consists of linseed oil, which contains about 5 to 10% Berlin blue. Arochlor is a mixture of chlorinated diphenyls and optionally polyphenyls.
Example 2
Printer's ink (soot) 15 g
Alumina 15 g
Carnauba wax 30 g
Turpentine 20 cm3
Arochlor 20 g
Example 3
Filler material was obtained in the following way:
Carnauba wax was mechanically crushed and dissolved in trichlorethylene; barium sulfate was added to this solution. The main part of the solvent was then evaporated off by gentle heating.
Example 4
Carnauba wax was dissolved in trichlorethylene and then the solvent was evaporated with the simultaneous addition of arochlor. The addition of arochlor causes the carnauba wax to precipitate in a finely divided form.
During the precipitation process, the solution was mixed with alumina and then the mass was heated further, so that a spreadable paste was created by evaporation of the solvent.
The nature of the filling material paste is preferably selected so that it can be easily removed from the plate surface by wiping, as described.
The ratio of wax or a similar suitable thermoplastic material to the inorganic constituents of the filler material is preferably 1: 1 to 1: 4. In Example 2, the ratio of carnauba wax to the inorganic pigments, namely printing ink and alumina, is 1: 1, while in Example 2 the ratio of carnauba wax to the inorganic pigments, namely printing ink and alumina, is 1: 1 Example 1 (carnauba wax to barium sulfate) is 1: 3.
The invention is not restricted to the described implementation examples of the method. All other, sufficiently solid substances which have the desired properties and which can be applied to the printing plate as layers can also be used as ink-accepting and ink-repelling or dampening agent-accepting materials. Likewise, the filling material can consist of any suitable, removable compound.
