et en ce que les compositions relatives dudit premier composant et dudit second composant satisfont à la relation x:9 v (11) dans lesdites équations (1) à (11) x et v représentent le pour-cent en poids d'un acide méthallyl-sulfonique ou d'un ester de l'acide méthacrylique d'un sulfoalcool dans lesdits premier et second composants respectivement ; y est la somme du pour-cent en poids de l'acrylate ou du méthacrylate de méthyle et de celui de l'acrylamide dans ledit premier composant ; w représente le pour-cent en poids de l'acrylate ou du méthacrylate de méthyle dans ledit second composant ;

Method for Making Composite Acrylic Fibers The present invention relates to a method for making composite acrylic fibers with nitric acid sol, having good dyeing ability and high resistance to chipping from nitric acid. a second component consisting of a terpolymer and a first component formed by a quaternary copolymer by a wet spinning process.
It is well known from U.S. Patent No. 2439815, Japanese Patent Publication No. 1024/1963, etc., that composite fibers having spiral creases such as wool can be made by bonding two or more materials having different properties in this respect. which relates to side-by-side shrinkage such as a bimetal or an eccentric web relative to a sheath.
However, in the manufacture of composite fibers from acrylic polymers by a wet spinning process using a nitric acid solvent, it was difficult to obtain products having satisfactory properties by employing a known process and any combination. known polymers. Thus, the composite fibers obtained according to the conventional methods were not necessarily satisfactory with regard to the resistance to chipping and the depth of color of the dyed products, which have a remarkable effect on the commercial value of the fibers.
The properties of solvent-spun fibers generally depend on the properties of their polymer components and the affinity between the polymers and the solvent. In the case of composite fibers, not only the properties of the respective components, but also the mutual interference of these components have a remarkable effect on the properties of the fibers.
Thus, when a composite fiber formed of two different components is produced from a solution in the form of a yarn and the resulting yarn is hot drawn and dried or subjected to heat treatment in the process of spinning, the change of the inter-molecular arrangement takes place on the interface of the two components due to the generation of a tension caused by the difference between the shrinkage properties of the respective components and because of the difference between them. affinities of polymers for the common solvent. The properties of the composite fibers are remarkably affected by the aforementioned change in the intermolecular arrangement.
The best condition for one component is not necessarily a good condition for another component. Since these properties and the molecular state are remarkably influenced by the solvent, it can be easily assumed that the properties of a composite fiber depend largely on the property of the solvent.
Even if a composite fiber is produced from a polymeric composition under a condition such that a strain resistant fiber can be separately produced from each component of the polymeric composition, the strain resistance of the composite fiber obtained is weak. Also, even if a composite fiber is produced under such condition that fibers having the same dyeing ability as those which can be dyed with a brilliant tint can be separately produced from each component, the resulting composite fiber cannot be produced. tint with a brilliant tint and in particular the depth of the tint is low.
This is believed to be caused by the change in the structure of the fiber based on the mutual interference of the respective polymer component and by the change in the molecular arrangement.
In the process according to the invention, the fibers are spun from a solution of a first component formed by a quaternary copolymer of acrylonitrile, of methyl acrylate or of methyl methacrylate, of acrylamide and of a methallyl-sulfonic acid or a methacrylic acid ester of a sulfoalcohol and a solution of a second component formed by a terpolymer of acrylonitrile, methyl acrylate or methacrylate and a methallyl acid -sulfonic acid or a methacrylic acid ester of a sulfoalcohol, using a nitric acid solvent,
in such a way that one abou tit an eccentric composite fiber. This process is characterized in that the relative proportions of the constituents that the said first component comprises satisfy the relations x + 1.75y-19.45 <0 (1) x + 3.3y - 28.63> 0 (2) x + 0.0208 y - 0.4288 J 0 (3) x + 0.013y - 0.6904 <0 (4) t-, u = y (5) u> 2 (6) in that the relative proportions of the constituents that the said second component comprises satisfy the relations v + 2.1w- 18.23 <0 (7) v + w-7.95> 0 (8) v + 0.02w-0.55> 0 (9) v + 0.01w-0.674 <0 (10)
and in that the relative compositions of said first component and said second component satisfy the relationship x: 9 v (11) in said equations (1) to (11) x and v represent the percent by weight of a methallyl acid -sulfonic acid or a methacrylic acid ester of a sulfoalcohol in said first and second components respectively; y is the sum of the weight percent of methyl acrylate or methacrylate and that of acrylamide in said first component; w represents the weight percent of methyl acrylate or methacrylate in said second component;
t represents the percent by weight of acrylate or methyl methacrylate in said first component; and u represents the percent by weight of acrylamide in said first component, such percent by weight being based on the weight of each component.
The process enabled the manufacture of a composite yarn having good resistance to scaling, which can be dyed to a dark shade to relate the properties of polymers with the property of a solvent and with the properties of a bath. coagulation to coagulate and spin the polymer solutions in said solvent.
When the polymer compositions are outside the range defined by equations (1) to (11) or if the methyl acrylate or methacrylate is replaced by vinyl chloride, vinyl acetate, vinylidene chloride , styrene, or the like, even if these equations are satisfied, the resulting composite fiber has unsatisfactory shatter resistance and other properties.
For example, when methyl acrylate or methacrylate is replaced by vinyl acetate, the components of the resulting composite fiber are able to separate from each other and the composite fiber can be remarkably colored. by heat treatment.
When the methyl acrylate or methacrylate is replaced by styrene, the resulting composite fiber is dyed with a quite indistinct shade. Also, if a methallyl-sulfonic acid or a methacrylic acid ester of a sulfoalcohol is replaced with another sulfonic acid, a satisfactory result cannot be obtained.
If the sign of the inequality in equation (11), which defines the proportions of the polymers employed and which satisfy equations 1 to 10, is inverted, i.e. x> v, the purposes of the present The invention cannot be realized, because the obtained composite fiber has poor resistance to scuffing or the depth of shade of the dyed fiber is reduced. This is due to the structure of the fiber depending on the specified compositions of components A and B and the spinning condition.
Sulfonic acid not only functions as a comonomer, but is also contained in the polymer, because the sulfonic acid segment is introduced into the end of a polymer chain by certain polymerization catalysts. The presence of a sulfonic acid group or a sulfate group in the polymers thus formed makes it difficult to produce a composite fiber having good resistance to chipping. If the amount of the terminal sulfonic acid increases, the thermal stability of the resulting fiber is degraded.
Thus, the fiber is able to be yellowed and the color brilliance of the dyed fiber is promised. Particularly, if the amount of sulfonic acid in component A is larger than the amount of sulfonic acid in component B, the resulting fiber is dyed a whitish color and the commercial value of the fiber is lowered. . The result is quite contrary to the aims of the present invention.
If the sign of the unequal in equation (11), which the composition of component B, which composition otherwise satisfies equations (8) to (10), is reversed, the creping property of the resulting composite yarn is difficult to obtain by the usual spinning methods. If the amount of the other constituents of the acrylonitrile copolymer is too large, the shatter resistance of the resulting composite fiber is poor and the advantages inherent in acrylic fibers are absolutely lost.
If the sign of the inequality in equation (8) is reversed, the color of the dyed composite fiber is unsatisfactory as to its depth and the fiber chipping resistance is low. If the sign of the inequality in equation (9) is reversed, the resulting bare composite fiber tends to chip. If the sign of the inequality in equation (10) is reversed, the resulting composite fiber is likewise susceptible to chipping and the shade of the dyed fiber is extremely poor. The fiber can be unevenly dyed in extreme cases. If two or more of these signs of inequality are reversed, a synergistic effect is obtained.
If the compositional range of component B is defined by equations (7) to (10) and that of component A is defined by equations (1) to (6) except that the sign of the inequality in the equation (1) is reversed, the advantages inherent in acrylic fibers are reduced and the resulting composite fiber is dyed unevenly, because the content of acrylonitrile in component A is low. If the sign of the inequality in equation (2) is reversed, the creping frequency of the resulting composite fiber is low or the fiber is apt to chip.
If the sign of the inequality in equation (3) is reversed, the resistance to chipping of the resulting composite fiber is quite low. If the sign of the inequality in equation (4) is reversed, there is a tendency almost identical to that observed when the sign of the inequality in equation (11) is reversed. The frequency of chipping is high and the hue of the dyed composite fiber is degraded and remarkably uneven. Equation (6) defines the acrylamide content in component A. It is preferable that u is not greater than 4. Such a composition allows for the remarkable reduction in the frequency of debrushing.
In this case, the possible introduction of acrylamide into component B has no effect on reducing the frequency of chipping.
The polymers used to form these composite fibers can be produced by known methods. For example, they can be produced by emulsion, suspension or polymerization by solution in water or an organic compound or solvent using 2,2-azo-bisisobutyronitrile, benzoyl peroxide or hydroxynitrilosulfonic acid, bisulfite. as a polymerization initiator. The polymerization temperature is advantageously between 0 and 70J C. The polymerization can be carried out continuously, semi-continuously or discontinuously.
Such a polymerization helper such as mercaptan can be added.
The nitric acid solvent used in the present invention is a solvent formed by purified nitric acid from which nitrous acid has been removed as much as possible. The concentration of nitric acid is generally 66 to 75 m / o. The acrylic polymers are dissolved in this solvent. As the coagulation bath, 28-40% purified nitric acid can be used. These nitric acids may contain other salts. It is preferable to maintain the solutions of these polymers at a temperature of up to 50 ° C. The coagulated material in the form of a wire is usually washed with water and hot drawn, then dried. If necessary, these fibers can be treated with an oily agent or can be subjected to an appropriate heat treatment.
They can be in the form of staple fibers, continuous filaments or the like.
When extruded through a spinneret, the spinning solution of copolymerized compound A and that of copolymerized component B are bonded side by side like a bimetal to form a composite fiber. However, the composite fiber can be produced to have a core-sheath structure, by changing the die. The section of the fiber may have any shape, for example it may be round, flat or have similar shapes. Even if the composite fiber is of the bimetal type, it can be of a sandwich type depending on the state of the dies.
A methallyl-sulfonic acid or a methacrylic acid ester of a sulfoalcohol employed in the present invention can be used in the form of acids or salts, such as potassium, sodium and the like salts. The sulfoalcohols can be sulfoethanol, sulfopropanol, sulfobutanol, etc.
A small amount of comonomers other than acrylonitrile, methyl acrylate or methacrylate and methallyl-sulfonic acid or a methacrylic acid ester of a sulfoalcohol, may of course be present in the components employed. .
The following examples, in which all percent are expressed by weight, serve to illustrate the practice of the present invention. Example 1 The following polymers were prepared using 2,2-azobis-isobutyronitrile as the polymerization initiator.
