2-Dichlorpropen-2-methylpyridiumjodid, 1,2- Dichlorpropen - 3,5-dimethylpyridiniumchlorid, 1,2- -Dichlorpropen-3,5-dimethylpyridiniumjodid, 1,2-Dichlor- propenchinolinchlorid, 1,2-Dichlorpropen-2-methylchino- linchlorid.

Method and bath for electrolytic bright nickel plating The present invention relates to a method and a bath for electrolytic bright nickel plating and nickel layers obtained by the method.
The method according to the invention for electrolytic bright nickel plating is characterized in that nickel-plating is carried out in a bath which contains a secondary gloss means which is a cation of the formula
EMI0001.0007
contains, where a is an integer from 0 to 3, R is an alkyl radical with 1 to 4 carbon atoms, a halogen atom or a hydroxyalkyl radical with 1 to 4 carbon atoms,
a halogen atom or a hydroxyalkyl radical having 1 to 4 carbon atoms and
EMI0001.0014
is a pyridine or quinoline ring.
The primary brightener is preferably present in amounts from 0.01 to 0.05 per liter.
The base metal on which the metal is deposited electrolytically according to the invention, preferably consists of copper or copper alloys, ferrous metals including sheet metal and other metals. like nickel etc.
The additives used as brighteners in bright nickel-plating baths can generally be divided into two classes with regard to their function. Secondary brighteners can 1. improve the luster of a usually dull or dull deposit, but not to a completely shiny or mirror-like level and 2. produce a ductility effect. The use of primary gloss agents in conjunction with secondary gloss agents can lead to mirror-like deposits.
It is preferred, with the new primary brighteners according to the invention, to use a further auxiliary brightener in order to produce mirror-like deposits. These auxiliary gloss agents can preferably be unsaturated hydrocarbon sulfonates, including 2-propene-1-sulfonate, sodium 3-chloro-2-butene sulfonate, the mixed isomers of sodium 3-butene-2-hydroxysulfonate and sodium-3 -butene-1-hydroxy-2-sulfonate,
Sodium -2-propyn-1-sulfonate and sodium 1-phenylethene-2-sulfonate.
The pyridinium salts used as primary brighteners according to the invention can be prepared by reacting a quinoline or pyridine base compound with 1,2,3-trichloropropene.
Typical pyridine base compounds are those in which R is alkyl; they can be pyridine itself, 2-methylpyridine, 3-methylpyridine, 4-methylpyridine, 2-ethylpyridine, 2-n-butylpyridine, 3,5-dimentylpyridine or 3,4-dimethylpyridine. A typical compound in which the heterocyclic ring is made of quinoline,
can be 2-methylquinoline (i.e. quinaldine). The preferred compounds are pyridine per se and 3,4-dimethylpyridine.
The preferred 1,2,3-trichloropropene can consist of the commercially available mixture containing approximately equal parts of the optical isomers. The conversion can take place in that the pyridine or quinoline base compound and the trichloro compound are mixed with one another. The reaction can preferably be carried out in the presence of an inert diluent or solvent, such as dimethylformamide.
The reaction mixture, for example the pyridine base compound, and preferably the inert diluent, can be cooled to 10 ° C. to -10 ° C. and the reaction mixture is held at this temperature for 48 to 240 hours. Preferably, however, the reaction is carried out at room temperature, i. carried out at 20 to 30 C. The reaction mixture is then kept at room temperature for a few days, during which the pyridinium salt can separate out as a crystalline substance.
The product salt can precipitate in the form of well-developed crystals, which are separated out from the reaction mixture, for example by filtration, and then washed. The washing treatment can preferably be carried out in a first stage with the solvent or diluent, for example dimethylformamide, followed by a further washing treatment with acetone. The product consisting of the quaternary pyridinium salt can preferably be dried under vacuum. These salts can be highly soluble in water.
The pyridinium chloride salt can be prepared directly from the 1,2,3-trichloropropene. The chloride anion which is formed when the quaternary chloride salt is dissolved in an aqueous solution can be replaced by other soluble anions that are compatible with the bath.
A soluble anion compatible with the bath can be an anion which, in conjunction with the compound referred to, renders the latter soluble in an aqueous nickel-plating bath in an amount sufficient to give a primary gloss effect, and is compatible with the compounds of the bath is, ie that a satisfactory application of the bath is not disturbed. Typical anions can be acetate, sulfate, methosulfate, ethosulfate, citrate and chloroacetate.
Preferred anions are the halides, i. Fluoride, chloride, iodide and perchlorate. These and other anions can be introduced by replacing the chloride anion, for example the acetate anion can be introduced by the quaternary chloride, for example, is reacted with the acetate anion by reacting the quaternary chloride,
for example with silver acetate. Iodide can be substituted for the chloride by reacting the pyridinium chloride in aqueous solution with, for example, sodium iodide in ethanol, etc.
Preferred pyridinium salts are e.g. 1,2-dichloropropene pyridinium chloride, 1,2-dichloropropene pyridinium iodide, 1,2-dichloropropene-3,4-dimethylpyridinium chloride, 1,2-dichloropropene-3,4-dimethylpyridinium iodide, 1,2-dichloropropene-4-methylpyridinium chloride , 1,2-dichloropropene-4-methylpyridinium iodide, 1,2-dichloropropene-2-methylpyridinium chloride, 1,
2-dichloropropene-2-methylpyridium iodide, 1,2-dichloropropene-3,5-dimethylpyridinium chloride, 1,2- -dichloropropene-3,5-dimethylpyridinium iodide, 1,2-dichloro-propenequinoline chloride, 1,2-dichloropropene-2-methylchino - linchloride. The particularly preferred concentration of the pyridine salt in a bath can depend on the secondary brightening agent that is used, the auxiliary brightening agent, as well as on other factors, such as the respective degree of the desired gloss, the speed,
with which the gloss is created, the desired leveling and the preparation of the base metal. The preferred secondary auxiliary gloss agent can contain at least one sulfonic or sulfonic acid group which is bonded to a carbon nucleus of an aromatic carbon ring, such as benzene, naphthalene, etc. The secondary brightener can be used in amounts from 1 to 75, preferably from 1 to 20 grams per liter.
Preferred secondary brighteners, which can contain a sulfonic or sulfonic acid group bonded to an aromatic compound, are, for example, saccharin, dibenzenesulfonamide and sodium benzene monosulfonate.
The nickel-plating baths according to the invention are characterized in that they contain the secondary brightening agent and 0.005 to 0.1 g per liter of a primary brightening agent, this primary brightening agent being a cation of the formula

<tb> Boric acid <SEP> 30 <SEP> to <SEP> 50 <SEP> g <SEP> per <SEP> liter
<tb> Working temperature <SEP> 30 <SEP> to <SEP> 65 <SEP> C
<tb> pH value <SEP> 3.5 <SEP> to <SEP> 5.0 <SEP> electrometric The baths are generally used with agitation, which can be done mechanically, by air or by pumping.
The working conditions for the electrolytic deposition of deposits from the baths mentioned may include temperatures of 40 to 70 C and a pH of 3.5 to 5 (electrometric) and preferably of 3.8 to 4.5, with a cathode current density from 1 to 10 A per dm2 is applied. Particularly preferred current densities in the baths of Table 1 can be 4 to 6 A per dm2 and in the case of baths in Table 2, 5 to 10 A per dm2. The electrolysis takes place preferably with movement of the bath.
Some examples of the implementation of the process according to the invention are given below.
In Examples 1 to 21, a Watts-type bath was used which contained 300 g of nickel sulfate, 60 g of nickel chloride and 45 g of boric acid per liter. The other examples had a high chloride content and contained 45 g of nickel sulfate, 250 g of nickel chloride and 45 g of boric acid per liter. In Examples 1 to 7, 9, 10 and 14 to 29, dihexyl sulfosuccinate was used as the wetting agent in an amount of 0.1 g per liter with stirring, and in the remaining examples sodium lauryl sulfate was used and mechanically stirred.
In all tests, mirror-like, largely balanced precipitation was produced.
In Examples 1 to 29, primary gloss mediums were used according to the following list:
