Stabilizer device for a road tourist trailer The invention relates to a stabilizer device intended to equip a road tourist trailer and more particularly a caravan.
We know that the weight distribution inside a touring caravan is not always what it should be to guarantee optimum road holding behind a towing vehicle. In addition, even if the loads are correctly distributed, the driver can sometimes drive at relatively high speeds. For these various reasons, it is frequently observed that above a certain speed, the trailer initiates a yawing movement which increases and becomes extremely dangerous.
In order to avoid these drawbacks, various systems have been proposed which are intended to be interposed between a caravan or the like and the vehicle which tows it. However, the known systems generally apply braking in both directions which consequently aims to indiscriminately slow down all the relative movements of the towing vehicle and of the towed caravan. These systems are therefore inconvenient for driving and, moreover, experience shows that their efficiency is very poor with regard to the road holding of the caravan.
The object of the invention is to avoid these drawbacks by producing a stabilizing device which gives the harness perfect stability, even at high speed.
The stabilizer device according to the invention intended to be mounted between a vehicle and a road trailer either to the right or to the left of the drawbar thereof, so as to be subjected to variations in elongation when the car is turning or when the trailer initiates a yaw movement, is characterized in that it comprises a braking mechanism mounted via a freewheel system so as to slow down variations in the length of the device in one direction, while in the in the other direction the movement is carried out freely.
According to a first possible variant embodiment, the device comprises a telescopic arm, one of the sliding parts of this arm of which is integral with a rack while the other carries the axis of a freewheel pinion which is engaged. in the teeth of the 1st rack and causes, for only one of the two directions of rotation, the drive of an adjustable friction disc.
Taking into account in particular that the right turns are generally tighter than the left turns, the telescopic arm is generally mounted on the right side of the coupling, the freewheel being arranged so as not to exert a braking in the direction of traction, so that the contraction of the arm takes place freely.
In another possible embodiment of the invention, a housing is fixed on the caravan inside which a drum or a pulley rotates on which one end of a cable is wound and anchored, the other of which is end is intended to be attached to the corresponding side of the rear of the car. The drum or pulley is returned in the direction of winding of the cable by a spiral spring, while it is connected by a freewheel mechanism to a rotating friction plate. This plate is held applied against a friction lining which itself bears on an opposing plate which is stationary in rotation and the tightening of which can be calibrated by acting on a nut which tightens the elastic return means.
The freewheel is mounted so that the drum or pulley is disconnected from the rotating friction plate when the cable tends to wind up under the action of the spring return.
It will be understood that in all cases such a device exerts an asymmetrical braking action on the caravane when the latter initiates a yaw movement, which prevents any development of the amplitude of this movement by resonance effect. Furthermore, this does not interfere with the operation of the inertia brake if the caravan has one, at least in the direction of the contraction of the telescopic arm or of the winding of the cable.
The appended drawing shows by way of example several embodiments of the stabilizer device which is the subject of the invention, FIG. I is a plan view of a coupling equipped with a stabilizing device according to the invention; the fi-. 2 is an elevational view; fig. 3 is a section along III-III (fig. 2).
fig. 4 is an elevational view of another possible embodiment of a device according to the invention; the fi-, 5 is a section along V-V (fig. 4). ; fig. 6 is a view similar to FIG. 3 for a telescopic arm, the braking of which is provided by hydraulic means; fig. 7 shows another variant similar to that of fi-. 5, where the braking of the cable pulley is provided by hydraulic means.
The device A according to the invention is intended to be inserted between the rear of a motor car B and the front of a trailer or tourist caravan C.
The coupling of the trailer can be ensured by a drawbar 1. Device A is mounted asymmetrically on one of the sides of the assembly BC, and preferably on the right side, since the bends at right are on average tighter than left turns.
There is shown in FIG. 2 and 3 a first possible embodiment of the device A, and it has been designated by the general reference AI. The reference A corresponds to another possible variant embodiment, illustrated in FIGS. 4 and 5.
The device AI is formed by two bars 2 and 3 which slide one inside the other to constitute a telescopic arm. At its front end, the bar 3 is articulated on a ball joint 4 which is fixed by a support 5 on the rear of the car B.
The rear end of bar 2 is articulated in the same way on a ball joint that a support 6 allows to fix to the front of the caravan C.
The bar 3 slides inside the bar 2. Each of these two bars is formed by a profiled iron with a closed U-section, so that the telescopic arm 2-3 has a longitudinal slot 7 over its entire length. has in the inner bar 3, a rack which is preferably constituted by a transmission chain 8 held in tension by anchors 9 and 10 provided at its ends. This chain 8 is therefore integral with the bar 3 inside which it is located.
On the outer bar 2, a lateral yoke 11 is welded which is provided with a bearing 12 in which is mounted a sliding transverse shaft 13. A smooth neck key 47 immobilizes the shaft in rotation. 13 inside its bearing 12.
One of the ends of the shaft 13 is integral with a welded friction plate 14, against the internal face of which a flat annular gasket 15 is placed. Against this gasket is applied another plate 16 on which a sleeve is fitted. friction 17, which is free to rotate on the axis 13. This sleeve 17 has a transverse flange 18 which bears on the fixed bearing 12 and against which abuts in the longitudinal direction the hub 19 of the plate 16.
On the hub 19 of the plate 16, is also fixed in the known manner, and in particular by screwing it, a freewheel 20 which carries a peripheral pinion 21. This assembly 20-21 can advantageously be constituted by a freewheel pinion. bicycle. The teeth of pinion 21 mesh with the rack that constitutes chain 8.
On the other side of the bearing 12, the shaft 13 ends in a threaded part 22 around which a stack of several conical washers 23 or a spring of known type is mounted. These washers are kept compressed between the bearing 12 and a thrust washer 24, by a nut 25 which is actuated by hand thanks to a flywheel 26 with which it is provided. Of course, this steering wheel 26 could be replaced by ears. by a handle, or by any other equivalent member.
The freewheel is chosen so that the pinion 21 is integral with the hub 19 when the telescopic arm 2-3 is expanded as shown in fig. 2 by arrows 50 and 28. whereas, on the contrary, the pinion is detached from the hub 19 when the telescopic arm 2-3 is contracted in the opposite direction.
The operation is as follows If the trailer C initiates a yawing motion while the car B is in motion, this results in periodic expansion and contraction of the telescopic arm 2-3. Any relative movement of the bars 2-3 is accompanied by a rotation of the pinion 21 which rolls along the chain 8 in one direction or the other. When this rotation corresponds to an elongation of the arm 2-3 in the direction indicated by arrows 50 and 28, the plate 16 rotates relative to the fixed plate 14 and consequently a braking effect is observed at the level of the lining. friction 15 which is kept compressed under the elastic action of the stacking of washers 23. The calibration of this braking effect is adjusted by screwing the nut 25 more or less.
On the contrary, when the arm 2-3 is contracted, the pin 21 is detached from the hub 19, so that the bar slides freely inside the bar 2. An asymmetrical braking action is thus exerted on the variations. length of the telescopic arm 2-3, which has the result of preventing the occurrence of any yaw movement.
The device A., shown in FIGS. 4 and 5 comprises a hollow housing 27 which is rigidly fixed to the front of the caravan C, by means of a console or the like 28.
This housing has a cylindrical shape and it carries on its side face two central bearings 29 and 30. A shaft 31 sliding in the longitudinal direction is carried by the bearings 29 and 30. Furthermore, a sliding key 32 immobilizes the shaft 31. rotating inside the folder 30.
The shaft 31 projects out of the bearing 29 through a threaded portion 33 onto which is screwed a nut 25 of the aforementioned type which compresses against the bearing 29 the stack of spring washers 23. or spring providing the same function.
The bearing 29 is integral with a friction plate 34 which is pressed fixed against the corresponding internal face of the housing 27. As before, an anti-friction lining 15 is fitted which a thrust plate 35 maintains applied against the fixed plate. 34. The hub of the turntable 35 is integral with the hub of a freewheel mechanism 36 of known type, the periphery of which is fixed to a hollow cylindrical cage 37. The latter rotates freely around the shaft 31 and it is integral of a drum or pulley 38 on which several turns of a cable 39 are wound. One end of the cable 39 is anchored to the drum 38, by any known means not shown.
The cable 39 passes through the wall of the casing 27 by an opening 40, and it carries at its outer end, an anchoring hook 41. This is intended to be hung on a handle 42 or the like provided at the rear. of the towing vehicle, on the side considered.
The hub of the freewheel mechanism 36 is supported on a stop collar 48 provided transversely on the shaft 31. Thanks to this arrangement, the plate 35 is kept pressed against the lining 15 under the action of the return of the stacking of spring washers 23.
A spiral spring 43 is mounted inside the cage 37, one of the ends 44 of which is anchored on the shaft 31, while its other end 45 is made integral with the rotating cage 37 by a pin of crage 46.
Finally, the freewheel mechanism 36 is mounted such that the drum 38 is made integral with the plate 35 when the cable 39 unwinds as a result of a traction exerted on the hook 41, whereas on the contrary to the winding . the plate 35 remains stationary when the drum 38 returns on itself to rewind the cable 39 under the elastic return effect of the spring 43.
The operation follows from what has just been described, when the device A ,, is mounted between the car B and the trailer C. In particular, braking is observed when the cable 39 unwinds, whereas on the contrary the return is carried out freely on winding under the action of the spring 43. It is understood that the spring 43 can be chosen so as to store a negligible quantity of energy, compared to the live forces brought into play during the relative movements of the trailer C and car B, since it plays no role in the stabilization proper, and has the sole purpose of recalling the drum 38 to wind the cable.
This system (fig. 4 and 5) has the advantage of being able to be accommodated conveniently in any location. For example, the device A can be mounted on the drawbar or jib of the caravan, and return the cable 39 by a pulley housed at the front of the caravan and on the desired side (for example on the right), in order to conserve ver to the wire strand which is connected to car B, the orientation previously described.
There is shown in FIG. 6 a variant embodiment for a device A1 of the kind illustrated in fi-, 2 and 3. The originality of this variant comes from the fact that the sliding braking of the two telescopic bars 2 and 3 is provided by hydraulic means 49 which can be of any known type . This could be, for example, a system where a piston moves in oil or a gear pump delivering in a short circuit through a throttle. In any case, the braking means 49 are interposed between a shaft 13 welded to the bar 2, and the freewheel 20 which carries the pinion 21. Thus, the hydraulic means 49 ensure the braking of the movement in a single direction as above. , due to the operation of the freewheel 20.
The variant illustrated in FIG. 7 corresponds to a positive device A., cable 39, of the kind shown in figures 4 and 5. However, here, hydraulic braking means 49 are inserted between the fixed hollow housing 27 and the free wheel 36 which equips the rotating drum 37. The fixed end of the spring 43 is anchored on the shaft 31 which is imniobli: e in rotation. Here again, the unwinding of the cable 39 is slowed down by the hydraulic means 49 while, on the contrary, its winding when the pulley 38 comes back on itself under the action of the spring 43 takes place freely.
