Method and device for measuring the etching depth of printing cylinders The etching of a printing cylinder is carried out by a more or less hardened or hardened one corresponding to the image content.
tanned gelatin layer. The etching liquid diffuses through this layer and etches the transferred image into the corresponding application layer of the printing cylinder, which is known as the Ballard skin. The sensitive gelatin layer does not allow depth measurements with tactile devices.
All known etching processes are therefore based on time, temperature or concentration control of the etching liquid, the quality of the etching being more or less dependent on the experience of the person carrying out the etching. An interrogation of the etching depth during the etching process without interrupting the rotation of the printing cylinder cannot be carried out in any of the etching machines known up to now.
The measuring method according to the invention consists in that the surface of the cylinder, which is provided with an etched layer, is scanned with non-contact sensors against a metallic measurement object in an inductive manner in cooperation with suitable voltage sources and amplifiers.
This scanning can take place in relation to a steel core of the printing cylinder as a metallic measuring object.
If the thickness of the base copper layer results in an inadequate measurement signal, a ferromagnetic layer, e.g. B. nickel, are applied. An adjustable depth point can be measured without taking the gradation into account, with the etching being interrupted once the adjustable depth has been reached.
It is also possible to carry out a measurement of two or more different etching points with a time query and the corresponding temperature or concentration control of the etching liquid.
For visual measurement, the entire etching process can be displayed on a screen, for example, or an optical comparison is possible against a target curve. Thanks to the non-contact system, the etching depth measurements can be carried out without affecting the transmission layers. B. consist of Ge latine and come for etching on the cylinder, so that the reject is very low, and a rationalized influence on the etching process appears possible, please include.
The accompanying drawing shows, for example, embodiments of a device for carrying out the etching depth measurement, namely Fig. 1 partial side view of a printing cylinder, Fig. 2 diagrammatic partial representation of a printing cylinder with the control devices, Fig. 3 device for carrying out a single-bath etching.
The core of a printing cylinder, which consists primarily of steel, is designated by 1. Above this cylinder core, a ferromagnetic layer 3 can optionally be worn on a base copper layer 2. The use of nickel as a ferromagnetic layer is possible.
The etching layer 4, which is also called Ballard skin, is located above this layer 3. The etchings in this Ballard skin 4 are indicated at 4a. A suitable separating layer (not shown) lies under the Ballard skin, which makes it possible to remove the Ballard skin after the printing process, so that the cylinder can be used again.
To measure the etching depth, a transducer 5 is used which is arranged at a small distance above the etching layer 4 and therefore does not touch it.
This is an inductive displacement transducer that measures the changes in distance between the transducer and a metallic measurement object, which is represented by the ferromagnetic layer 3, by means of a change in inductance in the coils. Such an effect causes a strong positive deflection with ferromagnetic steels and a smaller negative deflection with metals such as copper, aluminum etc.
There is also the possibility, without a ferromagnetic layer 3, to carry out a measurement against the steel core 1 of the printing cylinder as a metallic measurement object in the event that the so-called base copper layer 2 still allows unambiguous measurement results due to its small thickness.
In the existing bridge circuit, the etching depth is measured actively against the layer to be etched with only one sensor, while a second sensor is passive and is permanently assigned to a body (not shown).
In the embodiment according to Fig. 2 there are two measurement branches. The pickup 5a is located opposite a measuring etched surface, while the pickup 5b is arranged opposite an unetched surface. Subsequent to the carrier frequency amplifiers 6a and 6b, the signals from the pickups 5a and 5b are subtracted in a suitable device 7 and an evaluation, e.g. B. a display or controller.
Such a measuring system is calibrated on the outer skin of the printing cylinder before the etching process. The progressive etching weakens the balloon skin and thereby detuning the bridge circuit.
The detuning of the bridge is a measure of the etching depth. By acting on an unetched strip of the printing cylinder on the second receiver 5b u. a. The running errors of the printing cylinder are also eliminated, since the subtraction of the signals from the two sensors results in the effective etching depth.
In order to protect the two sensors, which are, for example, about 0.5 mm above the cylinder surface, from damage by the etching liquid, a stripping device can optionally be attached in front of and behind the measuring points.
The single-bath etching device for the pressure cylinder 1, shown schematically on a smaller scale in Fig. 3, consists of a housing 10 which is equipped with two drainage lines 11 and 12 at the bottom. Above these outflow lines there is a switch 14 rotatable at 13 in the housing 10, which alternately works with sealing plates or the like 15, 16 in order to open either the drain 11 or the drain 12 depending on the position of the switch 14.
Overflow wide slot nozzles 17 are located above the printing cylinder 1, which may rotate in both directions, and wiper blades 18 above them. A water spray device is designated 19.
The printing cylinder 1 is stored in a receiving device not dargestell th. In order to achieve continuous etching, the drive can take place alternately in the directions of rotation by suitable switching measures. The etching liquid reaches the cylinder evenly through the nozzles 17, for example. The etching liquid consists essentially of ferric chloride.
After the end of the etching process, an etching liquid or iron chloride / water softener, designated 14 in Fig. 3, ensures that the etching liquid and water are properly separated. The switching of this Wei can be done either manually or automatically.
