Man geht dazu z.

Process for producing modified polyvinyl alcohols The main patent relates to a process for producing water-soluble modified polyvinyl alcohols, characterized in that graft polymers of one or more vinyl esters and optionally other compounds capable of copolymerization with vinyl esters on unsubstituted or substituted polyalkylene oxide chains are produced in a homogeneous phase Compounds by acidic or alkaline saponification or transesterification converts the vinyl ester units at least partially into vinyl alcohol units.
Modified polyvinyl alcohols are understood to mean, in particular, water-soluble polymeric compounds which are at least 50 percent by weight from the units
EMI0001.0006
consist. The products obtained in this way, in which the graft structure of the graft polymer used as starting material is completely retained, have a whole range of new, technically very valuable properties.
The present invention now relates to a process for the production of water-soluble modified polyvinyl alcohols, which is characterized in that a graft polymer of one or more vinyl esters and optionally other compounds capable of being polymerized with vinyl esters is saponified or alcoholysed on a compound with polyalkylene oxide chains that the resulting modified polyvinyl alcohol is already cold water-soluble, but contains less than 50 percent by weight of vinyl alcohol units.
These products are preferably obtained in the partial saponification or alcoholysis of those graft polymers which have been prepared by polymerizing vinyl esters in the presence of polyethylene glycols, but also of those which are produced in the presence of oxyethylated polypropylene glycols and higher homologues of polypropylene glycol.
The saponification or alcoholysis can medium according to eden known methods in the presence of solvents or solvent mixtures, eg. B. methanol or methanol / water, batchwise or continuously, optionally in an inert atmosphere, eg. B. in the presence of nitrogen.
In the case of the alkaline saponification or alcoholysis, z. B. Sodium or potassium hydroxide dissolved in methanol: as a catalyst. It is generally sufficient to add an alkali in catalytic amounts. The saponification can be carried out at room temperature or at higher temperatures.
The determination of a desired degree of saponification can usually be done on the one hand by varying the catalytic alkali amounts, on the other hand by interrupting the saponification reaction, in the desired stage by adding small amounts of acids for the purpose of neutralizing this alkali catalyst.
It is also possible to obtain partially saponified products by using the different saponification rates of different copolymerized vinyl esters. One goes to z. B. from: a graft copolymer vinyl formate vinyl stearate laus, which was produced in the presence of polyalkylene glycol.
Furthermore, the known methods of saponification or alcoholysis in an acidic medium, eg. B. in the presence of sulfuric acid, apply to the production of modified polyvinyl alcohols claimed here, optionally in combination with a simultaneous or subsequent partial acetalization of the saponification product.
The present invention preferably relates to the production of those modified polyvinyl alcohols which 1. contain bound due to their graft structure units of polyalkylene glycol, and 2. also hydrophobic organic radicals, eg. B. Polyvinyl acetate residues, incorporated; both components in such weight ratios that the proportion of the polyvinyl alcohol units formed by saponification in the macromolecule is less than 50 percent by weight!
The lower limit of this content of polyvinyl alcohol units is characterized by the fact that the modified polyvinyl alcohols obtained are at least in cold water, e.g. B. water of 10, should be soluble.
This condition is largely dependent on: the type and: the amount of the polyalkylene glycol contained in the starting graft polymer and the content of hydrophobic residues in the saponification product.
The presence of chemically bound polyalkylene glycol in the starting graft polymer allows the modified polyvinyl alcohol produced therefrom by saponification or transesterification to leave or incorporate unusually large amounts of hydrophobic organic residues without losing water solubility.
Surprisingly: the water solubility of the products obtained according to the invention is not impaired by: the hydrophobic residues, but actually promoted considerably; If, however, the proportion by weight of the hydrophobic organic residues in the macromolecule exceeds certain values, cloudiness occurs when the aqueous solutions are heated.
In the process according to the invention, graft polymers which can be used as starting material are obtainable by polymerization in a homogeneous phase of vinyl esters, such as vinyl acetate, propionate, butyrate, stearate, alone or in mixtures with one another, with or without further copolymerizable compounds, preferably vinyl acetate, ; in the presence of polyethylene glycols and its derivatives, if necessary: with the use of solvents. The preferred polyethylene glycols are water-soluble types with a molecular weight of 10,000 to several million.
Furthermore, water-soluble derivatives of these polyethylene glycols, for. B. polyethylene glycols etherified or esterified on both sides or simply at the terminal hydroxyl groups, including particularly oxyethylated polypropylene glycols and corresponding homologues. Derivatives in which one or both hydroxyl groups are substituted by mono- or polyfunctional amines or amides, and water-soluble reaction products with mono- or polyisocyanates, are also suitable.
The amounts of polyethylene glycol or polyethylene glycol derivative which were bound in the starting graft polymer are completely retained in the saponification product.
The new modified polyvinyl alcohols have technically very valuable properties: They are particularly suitable as surface and interface-active substances, e.g. B. as a protective colloid for the Dispersionspoly polymerization; as a starting material for the production of foams such as sponges etc.
The new modified polyvinyl alcohols can be used to great advantage as: Material for the production of soft, easily water-soluble, clear, transparent films that can be processed both: from solution and thermoplastically. Further areas of application also arise in the textile auxiliary sector as sizing and finishing agents, and also in the cosmetics sector, etc.
<I> Example 1 </I> Preparation of the starting graft polymer: In a glass bottle with a reflux cooler and dropping funnel, 5.10 parts by weight of a solution of 160 parts by weight of vinyl acetate, 40 parts by weight of polyethylene glycol with a molecular weight of 25,000 and 4 parts by weight of dibenzoyl peroxide are added by heating polymerized in the water bath at 80.
After the start of the polymerization, the remaining solution is added dropwise over the course of about 2 hours. To complete the polymerization, the bath temperature is increased to 90 for 1-2 hours after the addition of the polymerization mixture has ended, the reflux ceasing. Subsequently, unreacted monomer is removed at this temperature by applying a pulsing vacuum.
198 parts by weight of a clear, colorless graft polymer with a K value of 45 (1% strength measured in ethyl acetate) are obtained.
1 According to Fikentscher, Cellulosechemie Vol. 13, p. 58 (1932). Partial saponification or transesterification: 350 parts by weight [of the graft polymer obtained above are dissolved in 641 parts by weight of methanol and 9 parts by weight of water.
37 parts by weight of a 5 percent strength by weight methanolic sodium hydroxide solution are added to this solution with stirring at 25.
The mixture: is stirred at 30 for about 1 hour until the start of thickening. The stirrer is then stopped and the gel that has formed is held at 30 for 4 hours. Subsequently, pure steam is blown into the gel, the stirrer is started again and distilled with steam until all the organic solvent has been removed from the reaction vessel and a aqueous solution of the saponification product of about 25 percent by weight has arisen.
Composition of the saponification product: polyvinyl acetate units in the macromolecule 25 wt.%, Polyvinyl alcohol units in the macromolecule 43 wt.% And polyethylene glycol units in the macromolecule 3.2 wt.%. <I> Example 2 </I> According to the procedure described in example 1, a graft polymer is produced from 50 parts by weight. Vinyl acetate, 49 parts by weight of oxyethylated poly propylene oxide with the following key figures: Molecular weight about 5000 OH number 23 Oxäthylhalt about 70% molecular weight of the polypropylene oxide used: 2000, 1 part by weight of dibenzoyl peroxide.
This graft polymer is purified by heating a 10% aqueous solution of it to about 70, separating the product, washing it with hot water and drying it at room temperature in a vacuum.
Saponification or transesterification: 100 parts by weight of the above product are dissolved in 180 parts by weight of methanol, 2.6 parts by weight of water and then 12 parts by weight of 5% strength methanolic sodium hydroxide solution are added. At 30, the reaction mixture is stirred for 5 hours. This creates a viscous phase after 1 hour, but it is not so viscous that the stirring is switched off. soot.
An oil is obtained on cooling to room temperature, pure steam is blown into Idas, a clear aqueous solution being formed with the methanol / methyl acetate being distilled off. The product is isolated from the aqueous solution by evaporation and dried in vacuo at 40 to constant weight.
Content of the product of vinyl alcohol groups in the macromolecule = 27.3% by weight.
<I> Example 3 </I> Preparation of the starting graft polymer: 300 parts by weight of polyethylene glycol with a molecular weight of about 25,000 are melted at 90 water bath temperature in a kettle with a stirrer and reflux condenser. 50-100 parts by weight of a solution of 1700 parts by weight of vinyl acetate and 16 parts by weight of dibenzoyl peroxide were added.
After a short time, the polymerization begins and the rice from the above solution is added dropwise over the course of 1 hour, with constant, slow stirring. 5 minutes after the end of the monomer feed, 600 parts by weight of methanol are slowly added dropwise to the reaction mixture. The vent of the reaction vessel is then closed and a pressure of 0.51.5,
generated atü. At this pressure and a water bath temperature of 80-90 ° C., the polymerization is completed for 6 hours with slow stirring. After cooling and venting, the resulting polymer solution is diluted with 2000 parts by weight of methanol. After determining the solids content, this solution is adjusted to exactly 40% by weight solids content using methanol.
Partial saponification or transesterification: 478 parts by weight of the above 40% strength polymer solution are mixed with 5.92 parts by weight of a 14.45% strength solution of sodium hydroxide in a stirred tank with a reflux condenser, which can be switched to distillation, while stirring at 20 Methanol, after about 40 minutes, the thick phase sets in, i.e. H. , the resulting saponification product has become insoluble in methanol and temporarily forms a tough gel.
This point in time can be determined precisely to a quarter of a minute. 23 minutes after entry of this thick phase, a solution of 1.5 parts by weight of acetic acid in 35 parts by weight of methanol is stirred into the reaction product, which has now become crumbly.
After 15 minutes the condenser is switched to distillation and all the solvent is removed in a vacuum of 40 torr at a water bath temperature with stirring.
120 parts by weight of a colorless, finely powdered modified polyvinyl alcohol remain, the macromolecules of which have the following average composition:

<tb> 47 <SEP>% <SEP> vinyl alcohol units
<tb> 26 <SEP>% <SEP> ethylene glycol units.
<I> Example 4 </I> The production not claimed here: of the starting graft polymer is carried out as follows: 150 Ge are in a boiler which can be heated by a water bath and is equipped with a stirrer, reflux condenser, thermometer and nitrogen connection: Parts by weight of polyethylene glycol: the one at the terminal hydroxyl groups with a diisocyanate; reacted and which has a molecular weight of about 50,000, melted under a nitrogen atmosphere.
A solution of 850 parts by weight of vinyl acetate, 8 parts by weight of dibenzoyl peroxide and 250 parts by weight of methanol is then slowly added to this melt at a bath temperature of 90 parts by weight and with stirring. The reaction mixture is then polymerized to completion for 6 hours at a bath temperature of 95 and under a nitrogen atmosphere of 1.5 atmospheres. The batch is then diluted to a solids content of 40% with methanol.
Saponification or redistribution: 1000 parts by weight of the 40% by weight methanolic graft polymer solution prepared as described above are placed in a kettle equipped with a thermometer and a stirrer and 10 parts by weight of water and 13.4 parts by weight are placed at 20 ° C. with stirring : added to a 15 percent by weight solution of sodium hydroxide in methanol.
After about 30 minutes, the viscosity begins to increase sharply and the stirrer is switched off. The reaction is carried out at 20 ° C. for 4 hours. At this point, the saponification is stopped by adding 3.5 parts by weight of glacial acetic acid dissolved in 110 parts by weight of methanol.
The batch is then dried in vacuo at 80, the modified polyvinyl alcohol according to the invention being obtained as a powder. The analytical examination of the reaction product shows that it is composed as follows
