durchsetzt, was bei ihrer Anwendung. z. B. in der Lackindustrie, sehr störend ist;
Process for the production of Polymerisatiönsverbindungen Zur Production
polymeric compounds in granular or spherical form has already been proposed
the polymerization of the monomeric compounds, such as vinyl, acrylic or methacrylic esters
as well as styrene, in aqueous solutions of polymeric natural products such as tragacanth,
Dextrin, or synthetic polymers, such as salts of polyacrylic acid, or
Copolymers, such as those made from maleic acid with vinyl compounds, or else
to be carried out in aqueous solutions of polyvinyl alcohol. The obtained in such a way
However, granular or spherical polymers have the disadvantage that they are after the
Work-up, such as filtering off, washing out and drying, does not work properly in organic
Solvents are soluble. The products often contain parts that only
are still swellable, but not homogeneously soluble. Such solutions are 'with swelling bodies
interspersed what with their application. z. B. in the paint industry, is very annoying;
or the spherical and granular polymers obtained in this way only dissolve
more or less strong cloudiness in the solvent, which probably indicates traces
Parts of the applied protective colloid adhering to the particles and cannot be washed out
is due.
B. in Methanol
It has now been found that spherical or granular polymers are obtained which do not have the disadvantages identified above if the polymerization of the monomeric compounds is carried out in aqueous solutions of reaction products of polyvinyl alcohol with aldehyde sulfonic acids. These derivatives of polyvinyl alcohol can be obtained in various ways. For example, polyvinyl alcohol, as can be obtained by alkaline saponification of a polyvinyl ester, can be reacted in aqueous solution with aldehyde sulfonic acids; It is also possible to carry out the saponification and acetalization in one reaction. This double implementation succeeds z. B. very easily if the polymeric vinyl ester with the addition of a small amount of aldehyde sulfonic acid in alcoholic solution, for. B. in methanol or ethanol, heated to the boil. The acyl groups are split off and the polyvinyl alcohol groups released react with the aldehyde group to form acetals. In order to achieve the above-characterized effect of the polyvinyl alcohol derivatives as protective colloids during the polymerization, even small amounts of aldehyde sulfonic acid are sufficient. groups in the molecule. So the effect is z. B. clear when there is only one aldehyde sulfonic acid group for about 70 molecules of vinyl alcohol groups. Another advantage of using the polymeric aldehyde sulfonic acids in the polymerization is that these compounds give a quantitative yield of polymers in a uniformly fine form even in lower concentrations in water than when using unsubstituted polyvinyl alcohol. For example, when using an 0.1% solution of polyvinyl alcohol, the polymerisation product of vinyl acetate precipitates out as a large, coherent resin lump, while when using a reaction product of polyvinyl alcohol with aldehyde sulfonic acid of the same degree of polymerisation in the same concentration, the polymer compound is obtained in fine-grain form .
The catalysts used in the polymerization are advantageously organic peroxides, such as benzoyl or tolyl peroxide, dissolved in the monomeric vinyl compound. Examples i. 400 parts by weight of polyvinyl acetate with a K value of 50 are dissolved in a vessel equipped with a reflux condenser and stirrer in a mixture of x # »o parts by weight of methanol and 400 parts by weight of methyl acetate. Then 28 g of benzaldehyde disulfonic acid are added and the mixture is heated to the boil while stirring. After 24 hours, the reaction is complete, as indicated by the water solubility of a sample. The solution is then diluted with 100 parts by weight of water, neutralized with ammonia to a pH of 5 and treated with steam until all proportions of organic solvent, methanol and methyl acetate have distilled off.
und aromatischen Kohlenwasserstoffen..The polyvinyl alcohol compound obtained in this way is used as an aid in the polymerization as follows: 600 parts by weight of an 0.1% solution of this compound in water are brought to 80 ° in a vessel equipped with a good stirrer and equipped with a reflux condenser and heating bath warmed up. In the course of 40 minutes, a solution of 2 parts by weight of tolyl peroxide in a table containing 32o parts by weight of vinyl propionate and 80 parts by weight of dimethyl maleate is allowed to run into the aqueous solution through the reflux condenser. After heating for 2 hours, the polymerization is complete. The polymer precipitated as a fine pearly mass. After cooling, it is filtered off, washed and dried in vacuo. The product dissolves homogeneously and clearly in organic solvents such as esters and aromatic hydrocarbons.
In 2ooo parts by weight of a 5o% strength aqueous polyvinyl acetate emulsion, prepared according to patent specification 727955, in which the polyvinyl acetate has a K value of 6o, a mixture of 500 parts by weight of methanol and 18.0 parts by weight of a 3o% strength aqueous solution of Butyraldehyde sulfonic acid run in. The mixture is then refluxed to 80 °. After 4 hours the mass begins to become opaque and very tough; after a further 8 hours a clear solution has formed. The methylacetate formed and the remaining methanol are distilled off from this in the descending condenser. Analysis of a dialyzed sample of the reaction product indicates that one butyraldehyde sulfonic acid group has occurred for every 70 vinyl alcohol groups.
Benzoylperoxyd in 40o Gewichtsteilen Vinylacetat in i Stunde einlaufen.
To use this solution as a protective colloid during polymerization
adjusts 600 parts by weight of an 0.1% aqueous solution with ammonia to pH
5, heats it to 80 ° and leaves 400 parts by weight of a solution of 1 part by weight
Run in benzoyl peroxide in 40o parts by weight of vinyl acetate in one hour. After 2 hours
the polymerization is finished. The polymer precipitated in fine-pearled form.
It is filtered off, washed and dried in vacuo at 40 °. The yield is
95%, based on the vinyl acetate used. The product is homogeneous and clear in
Benzene and soluble in methanol and ethyl acetate.
Is used instead of the conversion product described above
an o, i% aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol, obtained by alkaline saponification
of polyvinyl acetate of the same K value, the product falls during the polymerization
looks like a big lump of resin. If one uses a polyvinyl alcohol, which by
Saponification of polyvinyl acetate with a K value of 9o with sulfuric acid or sodium hydroxide
was obtained in 0.1% aqueous solution, the polymer is probably obtained in
fine-grained form, but the product is only partially soluble in benzene,
it contains many source bodies; in esters a very cloudy and milky solution results.
