Martensific steel The present invention relates to an alloy steel which is particularly useful in the form of plates, such as those used in the manufacture of ship hulls. Steels intended for this use must usually have an elastic limit of at least 98.4 kg / mm2 and up to 140.6 kg / mm, and must also have other properties. In addition to being resistant, they must be tenacious. It is well known that toughness is directionally affected by rolling.
Specimens for the Charpy V-notch (C.E.V.) pendulum impact test taken parallel to the direction of rolling are often more tenacious than specimens taken transversely to the direction of rolling. The difference between the energy absorption of transverse and longitudinal specimens very often reaches 100% and more, compared to the transverse resilience.
This directional phenomenon is particularly evident in plates and rolled sheets, because the degree of homogenization which can be imparted to plates and sheets by transverse rolling is limited by the fact that the plate or sheet is longer than the width of the rolling mill. It follows that the comparison of the resistances of two steels must be made on similar samples, which are normally C.E.V. transver dirty.
Constructions formed by welding steel plates to each other and to a frame are often of such dimensions as to impose a strict limitation on the types of heat treatments that can be applied to the plates before or after welding. For example, it is virtually impossible to standardize, quench, and sauté any appreciable part of the hull of an ocean-going vessel. Consequently, steels which can only be welded satisfactorily with preheating or normalizing, quenching and tempering treatments after welding, are unusable.
In addition to the weldability, strength and toughness of a plate steel, the builder using the plates must also consider the toughness of the area affected by the weld. In many cases, the areas affected by welding of plate constructions and the cracks caused by welding are the starting point for brittleness failures.
The object of the invention is to provide a high strength steel which can be used in the form of plates for constructions capable of being subjected in service to high pressures and to violent shocks at temperatures ranging from above the ordinary temperature. at -730 C and even lower.
The steel according to the invention contains at least 74% iron, 9.5 to 13.5% nickel, 2.5 to 8% chromium,
the sum of nickel and chromium being 13.5 to 19 0/0, 1.9 to 4.2% of molybdenum, 0.05 to 0,
40% aluminum and 0.001 to 0.033% carbon. It can also contain up to 0.3% titanium, up to 0.25,
% manganese, up to 0.50% silicon, up to 0.01% boron, up to 0.1% zirconium and up to 2,
% in total of beryllium, vanadium, niobium, tantalum and tungsten in contents not exceeding 0.2% of beryllium, 1% of vanadium,
0.4% niobium, 0.8% tantalum and 2% tungsten, the rest of the steel, apart from the impurities and incidental elements, preferably being iron.
The steel according to the invention is martensitic when it is cooled at normal speed from a high temperature, the austenite turning into martensite at a temperature below 370c, C. It can be aged in the state. martensitic.
Consider the composition of steel in more detail. The nickel content should be at least 9.5%, as lower nickel contents, especially in combination with chromium contents below 31%, lower strength and lower toughness at low temperatures.
Nickel contents exceeding 13.5 fl / o, in combination with high chromium contents, lower the strength, and are furthermore uneconomical.
The chromium content preferably does not exceed 5.5 D / o, as high chromium contents tend to lower the strength, although chromium may be advantageous up to 8 e / 0 from a corrosion point of view. if we. There appears to be an interaction between nickel and chromium during martensitic aging, after martensitic processing, which hardens and strengthens the steel.
This interaction is most pronounced when the nickel content is 11-12 d / o, the chromium content is 3-5.5% and the total nickel and chromium content is 14-16%.
If less than 2% molybdenum is present, the strength of the steel is much lower, but an increase in the molybdenum content above 4,
% causes a sudden decrease in the toughness of the steel.
It is essential that the carbon content is kept below a maximum of 0.033%. Carbon contents of even slightly more than 0.033% have a detrimental effect on the toughness of the steel. Further, the deleterious action of carbon above 0.033% cannot be overcome by the use of carbide formers such as titanium.
Like carbon, metal carbides such as titanium carbide greatly reduce the toughness of steels which, moreover, are in accordance with the invention. However, titanium in a content of at most 0.3% in combination with less than 0,
03% carbon has the advantage of attenuating the unfavorable effects of the small proportions of sulfur which may accidentally be present. The preferred titanium content is 0.1 to 0.2%.
The strength and toughness of steel also depend to a large extent on its aluminum content. In the graph of the attached drawing, the elastic limit (L.E.) (curve A) and the C.E.V. (curve B) of a steel according to the invention, and containing nominally 12 0/0 of nickel, 5 1% of chromium and 3 d / o of molybdenum, are plotted on the ordinate according to the aluminum content .
We see that when the aluminum content increases from 0.1 to 0.3 0/0, the elastic limit of the steel increases strongly, while the resilience according to Charpy with V notch, at 210 C, decreases only slightly. . Above 0.3 1% aluminum, the resilience decreases more and more quickly and reaches completely unacceptable figures.
It is therefore important to keep the aluminum content below 0.4%, advantageously below 0.3%.
Steels which must have an elastic limit of 119 to 132 kg / mm2 can advantageously contain no more than 0.025% carbon, 11.5 to 12.5% nickel, 4.75% to 5.25% carbon. chromium, from 2.75 to 3.25% molybdenum, from 0,
2 to 0.3% aluminum and 0.1 to 0.2% titanium. Tougher steels, for which an elastic limit of 102 to 109 kg / mm2 is sufficient, can advantageously contain no more than 0.03 1% carbon, 11.5 to 12.5% nickel, 3 to 3,
5 w / o of chromium, from 2.75 to 3.25% of molybdenum, from 0.05 to 0.15 '% of aluminum and from 0J to 0.2'% of titanium .
If the aluminum content exceeds 0.3%, it is preferable that the silicon content does not exceed 0.3%. Manganese contents exceeding about 0.25 fl / o, which are normally considered advantageous in alloy steels, adversely affect the toughness of the alloy according to the invention,
and therefore the maximum manganese content is 0.25%.
It is desirable that low proportions of boron and zirconium be present.
Impurities, including sulfur, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen, must be kept at their lowest possible levels, compatible with economical production. Incidental elements, such as cobalt and copper, may be present in small amounts, but are not particularly advantageous.
For the production of steel plates or sheets according to the invention, ingots of the steel can be hot-rolled at starting temperatures of about 12600 C and final temperatures of. about 815o C, then cool the steel to room temperature, or at least below 650 C, for martensitic transformation to occur. If sheet metal is desired, the cooled alloy can still be cold rolled. The plate or sheet can then be annealed at a temperature of 785 to 1040 C for 1 to 4 hours.
The annealing treatment serves to transform the martensite back to austenite, to place virtually all the alloyed elements in solution in the continuous phase of the steel and to eliminate the residual effects of hot and cold working.
After annealing the steel, it is cooled to transform the austenite back into martensite. The rate of cooling after annealing is not critical, but is preferably at least equal to the rate of air cooling. In the annealed condition, the steel can be cold worked or machined.
When annealed martensitic steel has been formed or machined, it can be aged for 1 to 10 hours at a temperature between 425 and 5400 C, for example loses 3 hours at 480 () C. During aging, the hardness steel increases, for example from a value between 25 and 32 Rc in the annealed state to a value between 33 and 43 Rc in the aged state.
Some examples of the steel according to the invention are given below.

Such heat treatment can be applied to a large welded plate construction, for example by means of strip heaters, electric resistance heating, induction heating or torch heating. Macroscopic and microsco pic examinations of the welding zones of some welded plates revealed only sound metal without any discernible cracks. During welding the heat affected areas soften a little. Subsequent aging to the martensitic state completely restored the hardness of the plate.

Its resistance is significantly lower.
Steel B contains too little molybdenum, but is otherwise comparable to steel 4. The loss of strength and toughness caused by the reduction in molybdenum content is striking.
C and 6 steels can be compared as C steel contains too much molybdenum. Although the strength is not much affected by this excess molybdenum, the toughness drops a lot.
The effect of raising the carbon even a little above about 0.03% is dramatically demonstrated by D, E, F, G, K and L steels. None of these steels exhibit C.E.V. at ordinary temperature reaching 5.5 kgm.
The manganese content of H, I and J steels is too high and results in low toughness. When the steels have a composition within the specified preferred limits and welds are made with suitable and compatible rods, very advantageous joints can be produced.
Tests have shown that weld joints formed in 1.25 cm plate by inert gas welding with a tungsten arc can have the following properties
