Glue for bonding synthetic or natural rubber to fabrics
The present invention relates to an adhesive for connecting synthetic or natural vulcanized rubber with fabrics, in particular made of polyamide fibers, polyester fibers or fibers made of regenerated cellulose, as well as its use for the production of vulcanized objects made of natural or synthetic rubber with a fabric made of polyamide -, polyester or regenerated cellulose fibers are reinforced.
The reinforcement of vulcanized rubber articles (especially rubber tires for vehicles) with fibers (made from polyamides, regenerated cellulose and polyesters) has become widespread. The necessity of making the connection between the two materials firm and stable, even at high temperatures and different types of stress, within ever expanding limits, places great demands on the production and properties of latex adhesives for connecting fabric and rubber. In particular, there is a demand for latex adhesives which can be easily and quickly manufactured and which represent a real improvement in adhesiveness with respect to the known or the fabric and the rubber.
As components for adhesives used between fabrics and vulcanized materials, u. a. the vinylpyridine latices are given, which are obtained by emulsion polymerization of butadiene, styrene and vinylpyridine, so that a terpolymer is formed which is suitably treated with crosslinking agents (phenylformaldehyde resins) and which is the bonding agent between the yarn or fabric and the rubber.
The fabric (polyamide fibers, polyester fibers or regenerated cellulose) is dipped in such a latex adhesive, dried and then vulcanized together with the rubber article to be reinforced.
However, the use of such vinylpyridine latices has the disadvantage that the preparation of the terpolymers consisting of butadiene, styrene and vinylpyridine is rather complex, in particular because of the difficulties involved in introducing the vinylpyridine into materials of the SBR-type (mixed polymers of butadiene and styrene) occur, such as B. the necessary modification or adaptation of the polymerization or stripping process.
In addition, the butadiene-containing latices do not have good resistance to aging.
The adhesive according to the invention is now characterized by a mixture of a butadiene / vinyl compound copolymer, a vinylpyridine homopolymer and a phenol-formaldehyde resin and the use of the adhesive according to the invention is characterized in that the fabric is connected to the rubber during vulcanization with the aid of the adhesive.
This adhesive shows significantly improved properties, which show in a better resistance of the object made of fabric bonded to it with rubber, e.g. B. with static load (e.g.
Tensile strength at different temperatures) and under dynamic loads (e.g. fatigue test).
Furthermore, the adhesive according to the invention containing a vinylpyridine homopolymer has the advantage over the commercially available vinylpyridine latices that it can be easily produced and used. As is known, the vinyl pyridine homopolymer can be produced in high yield, and since it does not contain any unreacted monomer, stripping is not necessary. In addition, it is generally very resistant to aging and shows considerable durability. Another advantage lies in the possibility of being able to vary the content of the pyridine-containing component in the adhesive easily within a wide range and thereby to obtain the more suitable combination as required.
Good adhesives are obtained when the butadiene-styrene copolymer and the vinylpyridine homopolymer are mixed in weight ratios of 98: 2 to 50:50, preferably 90:10 to 80:20.
The addition of small amounts (generally less than 1% by weight based on the SBR latex) of an emulsifying agent (a sulfonic, nonionic, resin, etc.) to the SBR latex prior to mixing with the polyvinylpyridine latex results in a mixture (and thus to an adhesive) that remains completely permanent for quite a long time.
In particular, it is preferred to add the stabilizer to the SBR latex (instead of the polyvinylpyridine latex), since mixtures with better durability are obtained in this way. Furthermore, the polyvinylpyridine latex can be added immediately after the stabilizing agent has been added. The optimum resistance is obtained by adding the polyvinylpyridine latex shortly after adding the stabilizing agent.
example 1
A) Production of the polyvinylpyridine latex
A homopolymer vinyl pyridine latex (PVP) is obtained from the following ingredients:
100 parts of 2-methyl-5-vinylpyridine, purified
5.72 parts of sodium oleate
0.57 parts of potassium persulfate
430 parts of water
Polymerization temperature 80 "C
Stirring speed 400 rpm.
Final conversion about 100%
Final Solids Content (TSC) 19.7 for
In this process only a very small amount (0.1%) of a non-emulsified polymer is obtained.
B) Preparation of the latex mixture and its stabilization
A commercially available styrene-butadiene mixed polymer of the type SBR latex 2108 (according to ASTM D 1420) is made up to a solids content of about 33% by adding a 10% above aqueous solution of an emulsifying agent consisting of the sodium salt of polyarylsulfonic acids (known commercially as Darvan 1, Vanderbilt Co., USA) at room temperature. The amount of emulsifying agent added corresponds to approximately 0.45% of the mixture of SBR plus PVP, calculated on the dry material.
The PVP latex obtained in paragraph A is added to the SBR latex diluted in this way, so that an SBR / PVP ratio (calculated on the dry products) of about 85:15 and a solids content of about 30% are obtained will.
C) Production of the phenol-formaldehyde resin
A phenol-formaldehyde resin with a solids content of about 6.5 o / o is prepared as follows:
To 238 parts of water are added successively at room temperature: 0.3 part of sodium hydroxide
11.0 parts resorcinol 16.2 parts formaldehyde (37% / above aqueous solution)
The whole is treated until a complete solution is obtained and reacted at about 25 C for six hours.
D) Preparation of the glue bath
The PVP-SBR mixture (according to paragraph B) is added to the phenol-formaldehyde resin (according to paragraph C) in a ratio of 100: 17.3 (calculated on the dry products). Water is added to the solutions so that a solids content of about 20% is achieved.
E) Resistance test
Both the resistance of the SBR-PVP mixture and of the entire adhesive are assessed by calculating the weight of the filtered liquid in grams per cm2 of the filtering surface, which consists of a felt disc with normal properties, which is placed on a, with suction piston provided metallic Büchner filter funnel lies. The test is carried out under a residual pressure of 360 mm Hg with a 30 cm3 homogeneous latex material (corresponding to the capacity of the Büchner funnel).
It has been found that a satisfactorily stable latex passes completely through the felt, while a not very stable latex very quickly leads to clogging of the felt. After less than 1 drop every 5 seconds, the test is discontinued. Both the SBR-PVP mixture and the corresponding adhesives obtained according to the above description give a positive result in the filter test, even 15 days after their manufacture.
The mechanical resistance of the latex is determined by ASTM test D 1076, which still gives positive results 15 days after the latex was manufactured.
F) bind test
The binding tests are carried out according to ASTM test D 903. The test pieces consist of three layers that are glued together: the first layer (the reinforcement) is a 3 mm thick plywood, the second layer is a 2 mm thick rubber layer (after vulcanization), and the third layer consists of a 0, 25mm nylon fabric folded to form a fourth layer, but not glued to the other layers.
A nylon fabric with large meshes consisting of threads with a diameter of 0.5 mm is used. The rubber mixture that is to be vulcanized consists of a commercially available material that is used to regenerate tires.
The adhesive bath (obtained in accordance with paragraph D) had a service life of 18 hours at the time of the test, calculated from the moment the SBR-PVP mixture was mixed with the phenol-formaldehyde resin. The nylon surface and the plywood layer that were glued to the rubber are immersed in the adhesive bath at 230 ° C. for 5 minutes and then dried at 300 ° C. for 14 minutes. The test pieces are vulcanized for 15 minutes at 1500 C under a pressure of 48 kg / cm 2, then conditioned for 48 minutes at 230 C and a relative humidity of 500 C. The tensile strength of the test pieces is measured with a dynamometer, the clamps of which move at a speed of 300 mm / min. move apart, resulting in a tearing speed of 150 mm / min. corresponds.
The results given in the table are the average values of 10 tests. Values which deviate from the average by 1 10% were not taken into account.
