Process for the production of new thiol carboxylic acid esters
The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of new thiol carboxylic acid esters of the formula
EMI1.1
where Ri is phenyl, mono- or polyhalophenyl, alkylphenyl, alkylhalophenyl, R2 is H odbf alkyl and R3 is alkyl or aralkyl, characterized in that compounds of the formula
EMI1.2
with compounds of the formula Ri-SZ (III), where in the formulas (II) and (III) Ri, R2 and'R3 are as defined above, X is halogen and Z is a cation and the reaction is carried out in the presence of an acid-binding agent By means of
when Z is a hydrogen atom.
The reaction is conveniently carried out in a solvent such as ether, acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, dioxane, methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, or in aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene, xylene or in a mixture of such solvents, at normal or elevated temperature, advantageously at Temperatures between 40 and 120 C made.
Suitable compounds of the formula (II) are, for example, the methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, sec-butyl, tert-butyl, benzyl and chlorobenzyl esters of chlorothiolacetic acid and the Chlorothiolpropionic acid.
Suitable compounds of the formula (III) are, for example, the sodium or potassium salts of the following thiophenols:
Thiophenol,
2-chlorothiophenol,
4-chlorothiophenol,
3,4-dichlorothiophenol,
2, 5-dichlorothiophenol, 2, 4, 5-trichlorothiophenol,
2-methylthiophenol,
4-methylthiophenol and 2-methyl-5-chlorothiophenol.
The new thiol carboxylic acid esters are oily liquids at room temperature that distill without decomposition in a high vacuum. They can be kept in watery EmuMon and are readily soluble in oils and organic solvents. Surprisingly, they are particularly suitable for influencing plant growth, in particular for combating weeds.
The new thiol carboxylic acid esters can be processed in the usual way to form compositions, the composition of which can be very different depending on the intended use. They can be processed into liquid sprays that can be emulsified in water or into powder sprays that can be suspended in water, and also into dusts or granules.
For the purpose of producing liquid sprays, the new esters in suitable solvents such as alcohols, e.g. B. methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, isobutyl or sec-butyl alcohol, in ketones such as acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, methyl isobutyl ketone or cyclohexanone, in aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons or in mixtures thereof Solvent dissolved, resulting in liquid concentrates which contain, for example, up to 60% of the active ingredient and which advantageously still emulsifiers and wetting agents, such as. B. non-ionic liquid polyglycol ethers, which are formed from higher molecular weight alcohols, mercaptans or alkyl phenofsn by the addition of ethyte oxide, are incorporated.
To produce powdery products which can be suspended in water, the new esters are mixed with solid carriers, such as talc, kaolin, diatomaceous earth, kieselguhr, bentonite, calcium carbonate, etc., and suitable wetting agents, adhesives, emulsifiers and dispersants.
The new esters can also be processed into pasty compositions.
The liquid or pasty or powdery products of the type mentioned are emulsified or dispersed in water before use, the resulting dilute emulsions or broths advantageously containing 0.05 to 1% of the active ingredients according to the invention.
The new esters can also be used without the addition of emulsifiers and wetting agents, but optionally with the addition of substances that improve adhesion and rain resistance, with an inert carrier such as talc, kaolin, diatomaceous earth, kieselguhr, bentonite, quartz sand, etc., or with a Mixture of such carrier materials can be processed into a dust or grit.
The agents containing the new esters are used in a manner known per se by emulsifying or suspending them in water and spraying the weeds to be controlled after they have been dug up or by spraying or dousing the soil areas to be cultivated before the weeds emerge Dusting of the weeds to be destroyed, or by direct application of the dust or litter mxttel or by granules.
In the following examples, the temperatures are given in degrees Celsius.

Some examples of the use of compounds obtainable according to the invention are given below. a) Mixing 20 parts by weight of the active ingredient mentioned in Example 1 with 20 parts by weight of tert.
Dodecyl mercaptan undecaglycol ether, 30 parts by weight of isopropyl alcohol and 30 parts by weight of cyclohexanone. A clear solution, which can be readily emulsified in water, is obtained, which is used as a spray concentrate for weed control. b) 50 parts by weight of the thiol carboxylic acid ester described in Example 8 are mixed with 25 parts by weight of nonylphenyl nonaglycol ether and 25 parts by weight of xylene.
The clear solution obtained, mixed with the necessary quantity of water and diluted, gives a fine emulsion that can be used as a spray mixture for weed control. c) By mixing 25 parts by weight of the ester described in Example 2 with 25 parts by weight of isooctylphenylheptaglycol ether and 50 parts by weight of methyl ethyl ketone, a spray which is emulsifiable in water and is extremely suitable for combating weeds is obtained.
d) A powdery, well suspendier in water ble means for destroying unwanted vegetation is obtained if you 15 Ge weight parts of the example! ! 5 named active ingredient with 3 parts by weight of tert. Dodecyl mercaptan undeca- glycol ether, 7 parts by weight of powdered silica gel and 75 parts by weight of kaolin are mixed well.
e) 10 parts by weight of the ester mentioned in Example 4 are vemmscht with 10 parts by weight of kieselguhr with the aid of 20 parts by weight of acetone and the solvent is completely steamed off on the water bath. The dry, powdery residue, together with 80 parts by weight of talc, is ground in a ball mill to a fine powder, which is used as a dust for weed control.
f) Parts by weight of the active ingredient mentioned in Example 6 are mixed with 72 parts of inert solid carrier mixture, consisting of 2 / s diatomaceous earth and 1/3 kaolin, 6 parts by weight of isooctylphenyl octaglycol ether and 2 parts by weight of a protective colloid, e.g. B. sulfite liquor, ground in a pin mill to a fine powder.
The same can be suspended in water and is used to control undesirable vegetation. g) 50 parts by weight of the active ingredient described in Example 2 are mixed with 30 parts by weight of tert. Dodecyl mercaptan undecaglycol ether and 20 parts by weight of a mineral oil with the following properties: boiling point 320-405, 20-25% sulfonatable fractions, spec. Weight (20) 0.990-0.92. A spray concentrate is obtained in the form of a clear solution which is readily emulsifiable in water.
The active ingredients mentioned in the other examples can also be processed into spraying agents and dusts in the same or a similar manner. h) In order to test the pre-emergence effect of the active ingredients according to the invention, cress seeds were sown in seed trays and watered lightly.
The dishes were then sprayed with aqueous emulsions containing 0.5% active ingredient, which resulted in complete prevention of the germination of the plants, while in a control experiment with an active ingredient-free emulsion the seeds germinated normally. i) In order to test the post-emergence effect of the active ingredients according to the invention, 3-4 cm high cress plants grown in seed trays were sprayed with aqueous emulsions containing 0.5% active ingredient. All plants were killed after 2 to 5 days.
