Device for fixing the end of a tape measure to its drum
Now, the decameter tapes are attached to the winding drum by means of a loop formed at the end of the tape and threaded over a finger arranged near the periphery of the drum or directly on the axis of the drum. This procedure applies equally to steel tapes which, for this purpose, are provided with a flexible terminal end (leather, plastic, etc.) riveted to the tape, as to plasticized fiberglass tapes or tapes. cotton, the material of which itself constitutes a flexible loop or at the end of which is fixed a loop of different material.
In the generally known case of stamped metal drums, the fixing finger is riveted to the drum and, in the case of drums obtained by molding in aluminum or in zamac, it is produced in one piece with the drum, so that its strength is sufficient both with regard to its fixing and with regard to its robustness. In modern manufacturing, however, the aforementioned drums are increasingly replaced by injected drums, made of metal or plastic. A fixing finger injected into a relatively fragile material lacks strength because of its small section.
The invention relates specifically to a device for fixing the end of a tape measure to its drum, obviating these drawbacks.
This device is characterized by the fact that it comprises jaws shaped at the periphery of the drum and means fixed to the end of the tape to come in and be removably fixed between these jaws.
The accompanying drawing represents, by way of example, one embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 1 shows a sectional view.
Fig. 2 shows a detail of FIG. 1 and in perspective.
Fig. 3 shows a variant of a detail of FIG. 2.
Fig. 4a is a section on IV-IV of FIG. 1, where the variant of FIG. 3 is mounted.
Fig. 4b is a view similar to that of FIG. 4a, in which another variant of FIG. 3 is mounted.
Fig. 5 shows a second variant of FIG. 2.
The device for fixing the end of a tape measure I on its drum 2 is shown in FIG. 1. The tape can be metallic or plasticized fiberglass or cotton and the drum is preferably injected in light metal or plastic.
Attaching the tape to the drum must meet two essential conditions. On the one hand, be removable, but guarantee permanent attachment of the tape during operation of the decameter and, on the other hand, resist the tensile forces exerted by the tape on the drum, without winding it. here is embarrassed.
To this end, a recess 3 is shaped tangentially to the surface 4 of the drum in such a way that a slot 5 appears thereon and that the jaws 6 and 7 separate the inside of the recess from the outside of the drum. . A peripheral notch 8 can also be made on the drum to accommodate the extra thickness of the tape fixing means, as will be seen below.
In fig. 2, it can be seen that these means are constituted by an ankle 9 introduced into a loop 10 at the end of the tape. This loop can be formed by the folded material of the tape itself or, when the latter does not have the necessary flexibility, in particular in the case of metal tapes, by a material such as leather or plastic attached to the end of the ribbon.
In fig. 3, the ankle presents as a variant two end heads 11, respectively 12, between which the loop can be introduced. We see in fig. 4a the mounting of this pin in the recess 3 of the drum 2. In this construction, the tensile force is exerted by the pin itself, on the jaws of the drum and is distributed at both ends of this recess.
In another variant shown in FIG. 4b, only one end of the ankle has a head 13, while the other end 14 is conical.
The buckle can thus be more easily placed on the ankle, but also risks coming out of it. The distribution of the tensile forces is less good.
Finally, in another variant of the fixing means, shown in FIG. 5, the peg 15 is flat and of a width corresponding to that of the tape. It has a central slot 16 at one of its ends, into which the tape or a connecting piece attached to it is introduced and fixed by riveting or in another way and, at its other end, a cylindrical bulge 17 of the same width and intended to be introduced into the recess.
In this case, the jaws of the drum are preferably eccentric.
One of the essential characteristics of the device relates to the jaws 6 and 7 against which the tensile force of the tape unrolled on the drum is applied. In fact, the traction of the tape which, until now, was carried out on an axis produced with the drum and working cantilevered, is distributed according to the invention, on the jaws on either side of the length of the slot, which allows it to reach high values without risk of damaging the device.
