In a tape measure, the drum 2 is provided with a recess 5 edged with jaws 6, 7 into which is inserted a peg 9 attached to the end of the tape 1. The peg may be formed as a cylinder having two end flange portions, or alternatively one of the flange portions may be replaced by a conical end piece.
