Process for the production of phenylthio-diamino-dihydroxy-anthraquinone dyes. The invention relates to a process for the production of di-amino-dihydroxy-anthraquinone dyes substituted by phenylthio groups.
It has been found that valuable dispersion dyes of the diamino-dihydroxy-anthraquinone series are obtained by converting one mole of a diamino-dihydroxy-anthraquinone substituted by chlorine or bromine atoms or by sulfonic acid groups with n moles of thiophenols at elevated temperature to give phenylthio-diamino -dihydroxy-anthraquinone dyes of the formula I.
EMI0001.0021
in which one X denotes the NH group, the other X denotes the OH group, Z denotes the unsubstituted or an inertly substituted benzene radical and n denotes a positive integer index of at most 4.
The phenyl radical Z preferably contains halogen, in particular bromine or then chlorine, as inert substituents; it can, for example, also contain alkyl, alkoxy, hydroxy, alkylthio, cyano, nitro, sulfonic acid amide, alkylsulfonyl or acylamino groups.
In particularly valuable and therefore preferred compounds obtainable according to the invention, Z is a halogen-substituted benzene radical. The diamino-dihydroxy-anthraquinone compounds substituted by phenylthio or halophenylthio groups are distinguished by the clear, pure blue tones of the dyeings on polyester material produced with them and by very good fastness properties, such as good fastness to sublimation and light.
In the process according to the invention there is no need for uniform atoms substituted by chlorine or bromine or by sulfonic acid groups. Diamino-dihydroxy-anthraquinones. The drawability of the end products, e.g.
B. on polyester fibers, it is even better if you deliberately start from mixtures of diamino-dihydroxy-anthraquinones substituted by chlorine or bromine atoms or by sulfonic acid groups, as for example arise from direct chlorination or bromination of diamino-dihydroxy-anthraquinones.
In addition to isomeric monochloro or monobromo compounds, such technical mixtures can also contain dichloro or dibromo derivatives and unchanged starting material. The last-mentioned Be component of technical mixtures naturally remains unchanged in the implementation, but increases the drawability of the reaction products z. B. on polyester fibers considerably.
The diamino-dihydroxy-anthraquinones substituted by chlorine or bromine atoms or by sulfonic acid groups can, as can be seen from the formula I, of the 1,5-diamino-4,8-dihydroxy-anthraquinone series (diamino-anthrarufin series) or the 1, 8-di-amino-4,5-dihydroxy-anthraquinone series (chrysazine series) belong to or consist of mixtures of both series.
The brominated products are preferably used. The diamino-dihydroxy-anthraquinones substituted by sulfonic acid groups can be mono- or disulfonic acids. But you can also start from mixtures of mono- and disulfonic acids.
Such mixtures are obtained, for example, from 1,5-dihydroxyanthraquinone by disulphation, nitration, reduction of the nitro to amino groups and partial cleavage of a sulphonic acid group.
The reaction of the diamino-dihydroxy-anthraehinones substituted by chlorine or bromine atoms or by sulfonic acid groups with thiophenols takes place at an elevated temperature, for example at about 100 to 200, preferably at about 150 to 180, and advantageously in excess of the thiophenol used with the addition of Halogen hydrogen binding agents, such as sodium or potassium carbonate or bicarbonate, sodium or potassium hydroxide or phosphate, organic tertiary nitrogen bases,
such as pyridine or triethylamine, etc. It is advantageous to first convert an amount of thiophenol equivalent to the amount of chlorine or bromine compound or sulfonic acid to be reacted or a certain excess into the corresponding sodium or potassium salt, where advantageous in a larger excess of thiophenol is being worked
which also serves as a solvent for the thiophenolate formed and for the anthraquinone compound to be converted and converted. The conversion into the thiophenolate is done, for example, by adding the required amount of sodium or potassium carbonate to a thiophenol melt at a higher temperature, e.g.
B. 150 to 180, while distilling off the resulting neutralization water. In the case of sensitive thiophenols, it can be advantageous to carry out this operation and the subsequent reaction under an inert gas, such as, for example, carbon dioxide or, in particular, nitrogen.
The di-amino-dihydro-anthraquinone to be converted by bromine or chlorine atoms or by sulfonic acid groups is introduced into the thiophenol melt and the mixture is heated to the specified temperature until no bromine or chloro-diamino- dihydroxy-anthraquinone or diamino-di-hydroxy-anthraquinone-sulfonic acid can no longer be detected.
In addition to thiophenol, inertly substituted thiophenols, in particular alkyl- and halothiophenols, such as thiocresols, thioxylenols, mono- or polyhalothiophenols, alkylsulfonyl- and sulfamoyl-thiophenols, are particularly suitable for the reaction Chloro- or bromothiophenols, such as o-, m- or p-chloro-thiophenol, 2,4-, 3,4- or 3,
5 dichlorothiophenol, 2,4,6-trichlorothiophenol and p-bromothiophenol, also o-, m- or p-thiocresol, chloro- or bromothiocresols, such as p-chloro-m-thiocresol, chlorothioxylenols, further 4-ethyl -, 4-isopropyl, 4-n-butyl, 4-cyclohexyl-thiophenol, alkoxy- or alkylthio-thiophenols, such as 2-,
3- or 4-methoxy or ethoxy-thiophenols.
The reaction product or the mixture of reaction products is isolated, for example, by diluting the melt with a solvent in which the thiophenol and thiophenolate used are soluble, but the anthraquinone compounds are insoluble.
For example, alcohols such as ethanol or methanol, but also acetone, benzene, pyridine and similar organic solvents are suitable, because the disulfides formed by oxidative side reactions remain dissolved in these organic solvents and can be easily separated off.
Another method of isolating the end products consists in entering the reaction mixture into dilute alkali lye, excess thiophenol and thiophenolate also going into solution, while the anthraquinone compounds fall out as insoluble precipitates and can be filtered off.
A purification and separation of various conversion products among themselves or a separation of non-chlorinated or brominated diamino-dihydroxy-anthraquinone, if such was present in the starting material or resulted from the reaction by reducing effect of thiophenols, by order crystallization from suitable solvents, eg . B. from nitrobenzene, pyridine or dimethylformamide, in some cases from ethanol or from butanol, is possible.
As disperse dyes for polyester fibers. but mixtures of end products obtainable according to the invention with chlorine-free or bromine-free dihydroxy-diamino-anthraquinones are particularly suitable because of the increased drawability on polyester fibers.
The phenylthio-anthraquinone compounds obtained, including especially those with chlorine- or bromine-free phenylthio groups, can, if desired, be further substituted subsequently by chlorination or bromination.
For example, the dissolved or suspended in nitrobenzene. Phenylthio compounds or mixtures of compounds with bromine or chlorine or sulfnryl chloride or other known chlorinating or brominating agents at room temperature or at a moderately elevated temperature, that is to say at about 40 to 60. Mixtures can arise again in that the chlorine or bromine enters different positions of the phenyl radical or the anthraquinone nucleus.
By distilling off the nitrobenzene, e.g. B. with steam, the chlorination or bromination products are isolated. The chlorination or bromination can also be carried out in a known manner in concentrated sulfuric acid, in sulfuric acid monohydrate or in weak oleum.
The anthraquinone compounds obtainable according to the invention, finely divided from aqueous dispersion, dye synthetic fibers, polyamide or acetyl cellulose fibers, especially polyester fibers such as cellulose triacetate or terephthalic acid polyester in true shades of blue. It can be dyed at the boiling point of the water and in the presence of color carriers (so-called. Carriers), or at temperatures above 100 under pressure.
The following commercial polyester fibers can be dyed in this way with the dyes available according to the invention: Teryl'en (ICI, Manchester, England), Dacron (Du Pont de Nemours, Wilmington, Del., USA), Terital (Rhodiatoce, Milan, Italy), Terlenka (Aku, Arnhem, Holland), Tergal (Rhodiaceta, Lyon,
France), Trevira (Farbwerke Hoechst, Germany) or Kodel (Eastman Kodak Chemical Inc., Kingsport, Tennessee, USA).
However, the dyes can also be used to dye paints and spinning pulps.
In the examples, the temperatures are given in degrees Celsius. Unless otherwise noted, the parts are parts by weight which relate to parts by volume as grams to cm3.
Example 1 200 parts of thiophenal and 10.5 parts of potassium carbonate are combined at 180 and dehydrated in the stick material stream. In the anhydrous melt 21.5 parts of a brominated 1,5-diamino-4,8-dihydroxy-anthraquinone, which is made from 2,4,6,8-tetrabromo-1,5-diaminoanthraquinone by heating in weak oleum and in the presence was obtained from boric acid, entered and held at 180 for 3 hours.
The melt is then poured into 2000 parts of 1N sodium hydroxide solution and the undissolved reaction product is filtered off. The bromine content of the starting material was about 43%, which corresponds to a mixture of dibromo-1,5-diamino-4,8-dihydroxy-anthraquinone with tribromo-1,5-diamino-4-hydroxy-anthraquinone. The reaction product is extracted with dilute sodium hydroxide solution to remove thiophenol; it no longer contains bromine.
It contains your formula dye as an essential component
EMI0003.0050
The dye dyes polyester fibers in neutral blue tones.
Example 2 200 parts of p-thiocresol, 10.5 parts of sodium carbonate and 17.5 parts of brominated 1,5-diamino-4,8-dihydroxy-anthraquinone with a bromine content of about 22% are shown under Passing through stick material heated to 180-185 until brominated starting material is no longer detectable by chromatography, which is the case after 3-4 hours.
The melt is then poured into a mixture of 1000 parts of water and 100 parts of concentrated sodium hydroxide solution and the undissolved dye is filtered off. It contains p-methylphenylthio -1,5-diamino-4,8-dihydroxy-anthraquinone of the formula as an essential component
EMI0003.0068
and dyes nylon, acetate silk, cellulose triacetate and polyester fibers in fairly neutral, clear, true blue tones.
Instead of brominated 1,5-diamino-4,8-dihydroxy-anthraquinone, the isomeric brominated 1,8 diamino-4,5-dihydroxy-anthraquinone or a mixture of isomers of these compounds can also be used in the above example with otherwise the same procedure .
Example 3 10.5 parts of potassium carbonate are added at 160 to 220 parts of thiophenol. The potassium thiophenolate formed partially dissolves with strong evolution of carbon dioxide.
The resulting neutralization water is distilled off while passing in stick. After 15 minutes, 35 parts of brominated 1,5-diamino-4,8-dihdyroxy-anthraquinone with a bromine content of 22.5% are added and held at 160 for 45 minutes, the melt or the suspension merges into pulpy form due to the reaction product crystallizing out. It is then diluted ver with 1000 parts of ethanol, filtered hot and the residue is washed with 100 parts of alcohol.
In addition to the reaction product, the residue also contains a good deal of unbrominated 1,5-di-amino-4,8-dihydroxy-anthraquinone. From the hot alcoholic; On cooling, the filtrate also crystallizes out the reaction product; it consists essentially of phenylthio-1,5-diamino-4,8-dihydroxy-anthraquinone of the formula

A further amount of the reaction product can be obtained by concentrating the alcoholic mother liquor.
The dye dyes nylon, acetate silk, cellulose triacetate or polyester fibers in pure, neutral, sublimation and lightfast blue tones.
If, instead of thiophenol, thiocresol, chlorothiophenol, chloro- or bromothiocresol, thioxylenol, alkylmercapto-thiophenol or 4-cyclohexyl-thiophenol are used, dyes with similar coloring properties are obtained.
The bromo-1,5-diamino-4,8-dihydroxy-anthraquinone used can also be replaced by dibromo-1,5-diamino-4,8-dihydroxy-anthraquinone or by brominated 1,8-diamino-4,5 -dihydroxy-anthraquinone replace.
Example 4 180 parts of 2,4-dichloro-thiophenol, 14 parts of potassium carbonate and 15.7 parts of brominated 1,5-diamino-4,8-dihydroxy-anthraquinone with a bromine content of 14.5 / 'o, which still contains about 25% unbrominated 1,5-diamino-4,8-dihydroxy-anthraquinone, are heated to 180 while passing nitrogen through,
the water of reaction distilling off. After about three hours, no brominated starting material can be detected any more. The batch is poured into 1000 parts of ethanol, most of the product precipitating out, while dichloro-thiophenol and the bis- (2,4-dichlorophenyl) disulfide formed therefrom remain in solution. The precipitate is filtered off and extracted with dilute sodium hydroxide solution to remove adhering dichlorothiophenol.
The getrock Nete dye contains 2 ', 4'-dichlorophenylthio-1,5-diamino-4,8-dihydroxy-anthraquinone of the formula

The dye dyes polyester fibers in beautiful, neutral, very lightfast blue tones.
Example 5 14 parts of potassium carbonate are introduced into 180 parts of 2,4-dichlorothiophenol at 180, and the water of neutralization is distilled off with nitrogen.
In the resulting suspension of potassium 2,4-dichlorothiophenolate in excess 2,4-dichlorothiophenol, 28 parts of a mixture of the sodium salts of 1,5-diamino-4,8-dihydroxy-anthraquinone mono- and Disulfonic acid entered and heated to 220-225 hours for 24 hours.
The he cold melt is extracted with a mixture of 3000 parts of water and 150 parts of concentrated sodium hydroxide solution, the excess 2,4-dichloro-thiophenol and unchanged starting material going into solution. The insoluble residue is washed with hot water until the process is almost colorless.
In addition to the dye mixture, the residue also contains bis (2,4-dichloro-phenyl) disulfide formed from 2,4-dichloro-thiophenol. The residue is now boiled twice with 2500 parts of ethanol and filtered again. The insoluble dye that remains, dyed from a fine aqueous dispersion, produces reddish blue dyeings on acetate silk, cellulose triacetate or terephthalic acid polyglycol ester fibers.
The alcoholic extracts each contain a dye mixture which is similar in color to the 2 ', 4'-dichloro-phenylthio-1,5-diamino-4,8-dihydroxy-anthraquinone obtained in Example 4. To obtain them, the alcohol is distilled off to such an extent that the bis (2,4-dichlorophenyl) disulfide just remains dissolved. The precipitated dye is separated off. It dyes polyester fibers or acetate silk or cellulose triacetate in neutral, pure blue tones.

contains are dissolved in 2500 parts of dry hot nitrobenzene. The solution is freed from a small amount of undissolved components by filtration. The clear filtrate is gradually ver sets at 50 with 16 parts of bromine in 100 parts of dry nitrobenzene. The bromination product begins to fall immediately.
After a few hours, 10 parts of sodium carbonate are added to the nitrobenzene and the mixture is distilled off with steam. The blue-black powdery residue contains 16% bromine and consists essentially of the bromophenylthio-1,5-diamino-4,8-di-hydroxy-anthraquinone of the formula

The dye dyes terephthalic acid polyglycol ester fibers in an aqueous dispersion in the presence of o-phenylphenol as a color carrier in pure, neutral, light and sublimated blue tones.
Post-halogenation can also be used instead of bromine. Use chlorine or agents with a chlorinating effect, such as sulfuryl chloride. The halogenation can also be carried out in concentrated sulfuric acid instead of in nitrobenzene.
Dyeing instructions: a) For the purpose of producing a dye preparation suitable for dyeing synthetic textile fibers, equal parts of sodium dodecylsulfonate and the dye prepared according to Example 3, which essentially consists of phenylthio-1,5-diamino-4, 8-dihydroxy-anthraquinone, finely ground in a vibratory mill.
This dye preparation is used to dye fabrics made from terephthalic acid polyglycol ester fibers by dispersing 2 parts thereof in 4000 parts of water, adding 12 parts of the sodium salt of o-phenylphdnol and 12 parts of diammonium phosphate to the dispersion and 100 parts of the fabric for 11/2 hours at 95-98 colors. The dye is rinsed and washed thoroughly with dilute sodium hydroxide solution and a dispersant. This gives a clear, sublimation and lightfast, neutral blue coloration.
Dye preparations obtained in a similar manner to those obtained with the dyes. The other examples are also suitable as disperse dyes for dyeing synthetic textile fibers and fabrics made therefrom by the method described.
b) 2 parts of the finely divided dye obtained according to Example 4, consisting of 2 ', 4'-dichlorophenylthio -1,5 - diamino-4, 8-dihydroxy-anthraquinone are in 4000 parts of water, which is 2 parts of a synthetic contains anion-active dispersant, suspended. The pH of the dyebath is adjusted to 6.5 with acetic acid.
100 parts of a fabric made of terephthalic acid polyester fibers are then added, heated to 130 in a closed vessel over 15 minutes with good circulation of the liquor and held at this temperature for 45 minutes. The dye is rinsed with water and soaped ge. A reddish-tinged blue, very good wet-fast, lightfast coloration is obtained.
