La fig. 1 est une vue en perspective d'une forme d'exécution du dispositif de connexion, qui montre l'extrémité d'un câble plat au moment où l'on s'apprête à l'introduire dans le dispositif ; la fig. 2 est une vue en perspective et en partie explosée d'un dispositif de connexion à deux contacts du genre de celui de la fig. 1, un des contacts étant enlevé pour rendre la figure plus claire ; la fig. 3 est une coupe suivant la droite 3-3 de la fia. 1 ;
la fig. 4 est une vue en coupe d'une forme d'exécution qui convient particulièrement dans le cas où l'on désire établir une connexion en un point intermédiaire entre les deux extrémités d'un câble plat ; la fig. 5 est une vue en coupe d'une forme d'exécution, dans le cas où l'on désire relier entre eux deux câbles plats, un des câbles seulement étant représenté sur la figure ; la fig. 6 est une vue en plan d'une forme d'exécution qui convient particulièrement dans le cas où les câbles plats comportent un certain nombre de conducteurs disposés côte à côte à faible distance les uns des autres ;
Electrical connection device for flexible and flat cable The invention relates to an electrical connection device for flexible and flat cable comprising a number of conductive tapes arranged in parallel at a certain distance from each other in a support made of a material. insulating and flexible.
For the wiring of electronic devices, the flat cables currently used allow light wiring which takes up little space. These cables normally consist of tapes or a group of copper conductors assembled together or molded between flat strips of flexible insulating material such as rubber or silicone or one of the many forms of polyester based plastic. or polyvinyl.
It has been found in use that, owing to the small dimensions and the delicate nature of the conductive tapes used, the making of the connections, with conductors whose insulation must first be removed, constitutes a painful job, difficult and the result of which is quite random. If we take into account the difficulty of removing the insulation, we understand how desirable it is to be able to have a connection device which accepts the cable while leaving its insulation.
The invention aims to avoid these drawbacks.
The connection device according to the invention is characterized in that it comprises a housing comprising a front face and a housing which extends inwardly from this face, so as to be able to receive it in the direction of the length of a flat and flexible cable in a position determined with respect to the box, in that said housing has two support faces for the cable substantially parallel, spaced from each other and intended to receive the flat cable,
in that at least one of the bearing faces comprises a certain number of grooves spaced apart from one another and arranged parallel to the longitudinal axis of the cable, in that each of the grooves is provided with a bearing surface, in that it further comprises a number of contact parts each consisting of a strip of a conductive and elastic material, each arranged in part in contact with the bearing surface of the one of the grooves, and each having an end part forming a certain angle towards the interior of the housing,
in that a means is provided in the housing for rigidly maintaining a portion of each of the contact pieces in the corresponding groove, in that each of the end parts of the contact pieces which extend at a certain angle towards the inside, has a free end which comes to rest against the bearing face of the cable opposite the groove in which the contact piece is located, and is arranged so as to be able to bend inwards in s 'moving away from this face,
in that each of said free ends is provided with a sharp edge shaped so as to be able to penetrate into the insulating layer of the cable introduced into the housing between the sharp edge and the bearing face of the cable as a result of a displacement of the cable in the direction opposite to that corresponding to its introduction into the housing.
The accompanying drawing represents, by way of example, some embodiments of the object of the present invention.
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the connection device, which shows the end of a flat cable when it is about to be inserted into the device; fig. 2 is a perspective view and partly exploded of a connection device with two contacts of the type of that of FIG. 1, one of the contacts being removed to make the figure clearer; fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of the fia. 1;
fig. 4 is a sectional view of an embodiment which is particularly suitable in the case where it is desired to establish a connection at an intermediate point between the two ends of a flat cable; fig. 5 is a sectional view of one embodiment, in the case where it is desired to connect two flat cables together, only one of the cables being shown in the figure; fig. 6 is a plan view of an embodiment which is particularly suitable in the case where the flat cables have a number of conductors arranged side by side at a short distance from each other;
fig. 7 is a cross section on the line 7-7 of FIG. 6.
On the wire-. 1, the end of a flat cable 10, in which there are two conductive tapes 16, is put in the appropriate position, when it is going to be introduced into the rectangular opening 12 of a connection 14. The dimensions of the opening make it possible to slide the cable 10, the cross section of which is substantially rectangular - in the direction of its length.
As shown in fig. 2, the connection device 14 consists of two parts 20 and 22, which fit into each other, and are held together by means of screws such as 21, which pass through the part 20 and come together. engage in threaded holes 24 provided in the part 22. This part 22 is provided with a housing in the form of a groove, tiné to receive the cable, and identified by the code 30, this housing being defined by the side walls opposite Sées 32 and by the surface 36 - preferably flat on which the cable rests.
When parts 20 and 22 are assembled as shown in fig. 1, we see that the shoulder 34 provided on the part 20, comes to be housed in the groove 30, at a certain distance from the surface 36, so as to form an opening 12 of rectangular shape on the front face of the device. connection, through which the cable is introduced. The part 22 is also provided with grooves such as 26, in which contact parts such as 28 are placed, which are aligned along the axis of the housing 30. By tightening the screws 21, the two are rigidly assembled. parts 20 and 22, which grip the contact strips 28 between them so as to obtain an entirely integral assembly.
The contacts 28 are formed by a strip of a conductive and elastic material, such as for example hard-type beryllium copper, with the end 38 of the contact blade bent at an acute angle, the free end extending and coming in. '' press against the surface 36 which is to serve as a support for the cable. This free end of part 38 of the lamella is constituted - in the embodiment shown here - by a pointed bevelled edge 40, which penetrates into the insulation of the flat cable forming a certain angle with respect to the flat surface. of this insulation.
A sharp bevel-shaped edge, the end of which is slightly rounded, has been advantageous in the envisaged application, but other shapes already known can be used - for example a straight knife edge, a bevel edge. or a simple pointed end.
The contact strip 28 can be provided with any suitable device, such as a tab 42 carrying notches - which can be found inside as well as outside the housing of the connection device 14 - so as to facilitate the establishing connections with external electrical conductors.
As shown in fig. 3, the housing 30 in which the cable is placed extends inside the connection device from the opening 12, between the shoulder 34 and the bearing surface 36. The rear wall 44 of the housing 30 forms stopper, which limits the longitudinal introduction of the cable 10 inside the connection device and makes it possible to be certain that the connection is established at a determined distance from the end of the cable.
The various constituents of the embodiment of FIG. 4 correspond in all points with those of FIG. 3, with the exception of the rear wall 44 which, in the present case, has an inclined edge 46 which opens into a complementary groove 31. This groove 31 is arranged along the same axis and its transverse dimensions are the same as those of the opening 12, which allows the cable to pass entirely through the connection device, so that contact can thus be established at any intermediate point between the two ends of the cable.
The inclined ridge 46 serves to guide the cable into the groove 31 after it has passed into the groove 30 below the cutting edge 40.
The connection device of FIG. 5 is in short the equivalent of two connection devices according to FIG. 3, assembled back to back following the line A-A.
The codes which identify the various elements correspond to those of the elements of FIGS. 1-3. The elements whose coordinate system is assigned an index 'and which are situated to the right of line A-A correspond to identical elements and arranged symmetrically to the left of line A-A.
The mode of use of these various embodiments is in principle the same. The cable is introduced through the opening 12 in the groove 30 and it is pushed axially against the front face of the end 38 of the contact strip, until this end is folded back at the point of curvature 39, this which moves the sharp edge 40 towards the interior of the housing by moving it away from the opening 12 and from the bearing surface 36 of the cable; the end of the cable therefore passes below the end 38 of the contact strip and slides inwardly of the groove between the edge 40 and the bearing surface 36.
The side walls 32 guide the longitudinal edges of the cable 10 and thus determine the transverse position of the cable inside the groove 30, so as to bring the conductors 16 of the cable directly below the sharp edges 40 of the various strips of contact. The transverse distance between the different contacts corresponds to the distance between the different conductors inside the cable.
When the cable is introduced into its housing, the end 38 of the contact strip makes a certain angle with the surface of the cable 10 and rests elastically against the surface of the insulation because of the bend 39: if at this when pulling on the cable, removing it towards the outside of the connector, we just force cer at this point against the sharp edge 40 and this edge then penetrates at a certain angle into the insulation which covers the cable. As seen in fig. 5, a longitudinal section through a flat cable shows that it consists of a conductive tape 16 sandwiched between two insulating layers 17.
By penetrating into the upper insulating layer, the sharp edge 40 comes into contact with the conductive tape 16 and thus establishes the required electrical connection.
The force exerted by this edge 40 against the conductor 16 deforms the latter, without significantly piercing it, and thus constitutes a contact surface between the upper face of the conductor and the front of the end 38 of the contact strip. . As the conductor deforms around the ridge 40, a flattened portion is thus obtained which tends to prevent any penetration into the lower insulating layer 17. The relative angular position between the end 38 of the strip and the conductor 16 tends to decrease. the normal piercing force exerted by the edge 40 and thus facilitates this protective effect. To achieve this result, the most favorable angle was found to be between 300 and 700.
In practice, the maximum outward tensile force, which can be exerted by hand on the cable, without making it come out of the connector, is sufficient to obtain, as we have just explained, a suitable contact without pro evoke the driver's hole. In the devices designed to make connections only at the end of the cable, such as the embodiments shown in FIGS. 3, 5 and 6, the side walls 32 are slightly converging inwards, from the opening 12, as shown in fig. 2. In this way, a certain transverse compressive force is exerted on the cable, which increases as the cable 10 enters its housing 30.
This compressive force, during the introduction of the cable, is stored in the insulation 17 - which is slightly compressible and elastic - as is the case for the materials generally used for the insulation of flat cables. When the force which is necessary to ensure the introduction of the cable ceases, the insulation which has been compressed tends to expand between the side walls 32 - slightly diverging towards the outlet of the connection device - and to push the cable back towards the end. 'outside its housing 30, and consequently against the sharp edge 40. The cable being thus pushed outwards, the penetration of the contact 38 into the insulation of the cable is facilitated, which ensures the permanence of the established contact. between the contact and the driver.
The connection device shown in FIGS. 6 and 7, which is particularly suitable for cables which have a certain number of conductors arranged very close to each other, is constituted by a body 61 in which there is a certain number of contact strips 63, the body being preferably formed of two halves of insulating material 60 and 62, which are held against each other, for example by means of elastic clamps 64. Each half has a bearing face 66 for the cable, two side walls 68, and a certain number of grooves 70, in which the contact strips are placed, grooves which are made in the bearing faces of the two halves.
The bearing faces 66 and the side walls 68 form between them a housing, of substantially rectangular section, inside the body 61, the housing in which the flat cable can be slid along its longitudinal axis. Grooves 70 are provided on each of the bearing faces 66, such that when the two halves are assembled, the grooves provided in one of the bearing faces are located substantially opposite the portions 72 of the bearing face located between the grooves of the other bearing face.
The contact pieces 63 are in principle the same as those used in the other models of connectors described above, these pieces have one end 74 bent at a certain angle, they end in sharp edges 76, and at the other end they are provided with tabs 78 with notches for connecting external conductors. These contact pieces may however have different lengths, and be bent at different angles, as shown in Fig. 7, so as to separate them from each other and thus facilitate the connection of the external connections.
The ends 74 of the strips frozen in the grooves 70 come out of the latter and come to rest against the opposite portions 72 of the face on which the cable rests. The penetration of the ends of the contact strips and the establishment of contacts with the conductors of the cable, by means of the sharp edges 76, is carried out in the same manner as that which has been described above in relation to the embodiments shown. felt by fig. 3, 4 and 5.
The electrical connection devices described are simple and safe and can be used with flat-shaped cables from which the insulation is not removed. These devices can be connected to the cable without the need for tools or other external devices, and they can make a connection at any point along the cable length, with any conductor of your choice or with all conductors in the cable. The pressure necessary to achieve contact is established and maintained automatically, following the introduction of the cable into the connection device and when the effort necessary to achieve this introduction ceases.
