Unis d'Amérique No 2872700 décrit un tel appareil.

A method of molding a plastic object,
and apparatus for carrying out this method
The objects of the present invention are, on the one hand, a method, and on the other hand, an apparatus for molding articles of organic plastic material and more particularly for molding these articles by first forming a hollow blank in a mold. injection then by blowing this blank in a blow mold.
Such devices are already known. One of them, in particular, is described in United States Patent No. 3029468, April 17, 1962. In this apparatus a removable blow mold has the final shape of the object to be produced. This mold is crossed by a blowing pipe which forms the internal wall of a roughing die. An injection nozzle is placed outside the blow mold cavity in alignment with the external members of the roughing die. The arrangement is such that during the injection and the formation of the blank, the blow pipe completely passes through the blow mold, which is open and located in the vicinity of the injection members.
The blow pipe carrying the blank is then withdrawn from the injection zone and brought into the cavity of the blow mold after which the latter is closed and the blank is brought to its final shape by expansion under the action of a pressurized fluid.
Still other devices are known which make it possible to produce hollow objects by blow molding from a blank molded around a blow pipe. Thus, for example, the state patent
United States of America No. 2872700 describes such an apparatus.
When the blowing tube is relatively long and thin, it is frequently encountered difficulties in keeping it centered in a precise manner relative to the outer member of the roughing die. The uneven force distribution around the blowing nozzle tends to deflect the latter during the injection of the preform and the latter exhibits unpredictable variations in its wall thickness.
The object of the present invention is to provide a means which makes it possible to effectively and precisely center the elements mentioned above during the injection of the preform.
The method, object of the invention according to which a blank is formed by injection around a hollow core fixed by one of its ends and extending longitudinally inside the cavity of an injection mold, is characterized in that the free end of the core which is engaged in the injection mold is made to support against a centering member which maintains the core in an axial position while the plasticized material is injected into the injection mold, so as to form a blank comprising a bottom provided with an opening formed by said centering member,
in that the core with the blank surrounding it is placed between movable elements of a blow mold and the opening of the blank is closed so as to provide the latter with a solid bottom in compressing between the edges of the elements of the blow mold the end elements of the wall of the blank before sending the blowing pressure inside the hollow core.
The apparatus for carrying out the method is characterized in that it comprises an injection mold comprising an external member and a blowing core, the shape of the latter being such that it at least partly limits a cavity. injection device intended for the formation of a blank and this core having a free end disposed inside the outer member, a fixed support element carried by the outer member being in contact with said end of the core so as to support and fix said end of the core while preventing any lateral displacement thereof, means for injecting the plastic material into the cavity of the injection mold so as to form the side walls and the bottom of a blank ,
the latter being provided with an opening formed by the support element, means for withdrawing the blowing core with the blank from said external member and from said support by bringing it to a blowing position, a blow mold placed so as to surround the blank placed in said blowing position, this mold having a bottom which comprises elements capable of gripping the walls of the blank so as to fenner its opening, said core having a passage making it possible to bring to inside the mold cavity a pressurized fluid capable of inflating the blank.
The appended drawing illustrates, by way of example, an embodiment of the method and an embodiment of the apparatus.
Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section partially in elevation of said embodiment.
Fig. 2 a similar section showing the mold in a position corresponding to another step of the process.
Fig. 3 a partial section similar to FIG. 1 but on a larger scale.
The apparatus shown comprises a cover block 24 which comprises an inlet plate 25 and a cylinder 26, both of these parts being arranged to constitute an injection mold. The cover block 24 could, as a variant, be shared axially or radially and consist of several movable elements relative to each other to facilitate demolding of the blank, the formation of which will be described. The cover block 24 is mounted on a fixed support 27. The plate 25 carries a centering head 28 which has a conical end portion 29. The plate 25 of the block 24 forms in its central part an injection nozzle 30 with a jet. deviated which has an axial central passage 31 ending in a series of oblique passages 32 whose openings are arranged around the centering head 28.
An injection pipe is brought into contact with the inlet of the nozzle 30 and pressed against this nozzle as in devices of this type already known.
A pipe 35 which constitutes a blowing core, comprising a cylindrical wall 36 and an end portion 37, is engaged in and carried by a cylindrical element 38 itself carried by a support, not shown. The blowing tube 35 comprises a passage 40 communicating with orifices 41 passing through the wall 36. It is connected to the element 38 by an enlarged cylindrical portion 42 whose shape is adjusted so as to constitute a neck 44 at one end of the tube. cylindrical side wall 47 of a blank 45 which is closed at the end opposite the neck by a thick bottom 61. The end part 37 of the tube 35 has a conical housing 46 which corresponds in its dimensions with the end of the tube. centering head 28 and which ensures the centering of the tube 35 relative to the block 24.
As a result, the cylindrical wall 47 of the blank 45 has a uniform thickness. The pipe 35 carries a flange 49 which rests against the end face of the block 24 and thus closes the roughing die.
The apparatus described further comprises a blow mold in two halves 50 and 51 capable of being separated or united by means of members not shown. The mold halves 50 and 51 have cavities 52 and 53 together defining an internal space having the shape of a jar. They also have semi-cylindrical side surfaces 54 and 55 intended to bear against the neck 44 of the blank when the mold halves are brought together.
These mold halves further comprise mating bottoms 57 and 58 which are arranged to completely close the mold cavity when said halves are brought together. These bottoms 57 and 58 each have an edge 59, 60 which extends in the region where the bottom 61 of the blank is located. They are arranged so as to counter part of this base and to separate it from the rest of the blank when the mold is closed, as can be seen in FIG. 2. In doing so, they close the opening made in the bottom 61 of the blank by the centering pin 28. The ridges 59 and 60 pass through the thick bottom 61 and cut out a portion 63 shown in FIG. 2.
The apparatus described operates as follows: with the mold halves 50 and 51 separated, the blast core 35 is advanced until contact with the nozzle 30. At this time, the tubing 35 and the block 24 which form t the injection mold limit a closed space having the shape of the blank. The members 24 and 35 are aligned and centered with precision thanks to the engagement of the tenon 28 in the housing 46. Organic plastic material is then injected through the injection orifices so as to form the blank. The latter has a hole in its bottom 61, this hole usually being smaller than the diameter of the blast core.
The latter is then removed from the injection mold 24 with the blank engaged on it and arnené inside the blow mold. It is obvious that the displacement of the blank in the axial direction with respect to the blow mold and the injection matrix can be done in different ways and can be accompanied by lateral displacements.
The mold halves 50 and 51 are then closed on the blank, the latter still being engaged on the blowing core. When the blow mold is closed, its surfaces 54 and 55 pinch the neck 44 and compress it so as to form the neck of the jar. As mentioned above, ridges 59 and 60 intersect portion 63 as the mold closes. The opening of the bottom of the blank is welded as a result of the reflux of material at the time of this operation. The thickness of the cut part depends on the amount of material that must be pushed back to close the opening in the bottom of the blank. In some cases the bottoms 57 and 58 can be adjusted so as to press against the bottom of the blank without cutting it.
When the mold is closed, a pressurized fluid such as air is sent through the tubing 35 so as to inflate the blank inside the mold and bring it to the final shape of a jar determined by the internal cavity of the mold and t shown in phantom in FIG. 2. The jar can be removed from the mold by opening the mold and extracting it from the blow core.
