Process for the preparation of organic compounds useful as ultraviolet absorbers
The invention relates to a process for the production of organic compounds which are suitable for use as ultraviolet absorbers.
Various organic compounds have the ability to absorb electromagnetic rays in the range from 2900 to 3700 A, and if they are incorporated in plastic material, for example in transparent films, such a film acts as a filter for the radiation passing through and only lets out those rays through which are not retained by the film and / or the absorbent. In this way, unwanted radiation can be blocked out and the transparent films obtained in this way can be used as filters for various technical and commercial fields of application, such as for food packaging.
Numerous organic compounds have already been proposed as absorbents for the range of radiation mentioned, which is referred to as the ultraviolet range. Their use includes the incorporation in plastic film material as well as the stabilization of transparent plastic structures in general. The ultraviolet radiation contained in sunlight is by far the most important. Their effect on human skin, which manifests itself as tanning and sunburn, is well known. Other effects which are of great commercial importance reside in the photochemical damage caused by ultraviolet rays.
When exposed to such radiation, many commercial products are either unstable or affected to the extent that they are unusable or unsaleable. Many plastics suffer significant damage in the process, which manifests itself in undesirable discoloration and, as a result, in a loss of transparency. In addition to the discoloration, foodstuffs are often inedible.
Moisture, edible oils, butter and other foods spoil after prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light and become ranzi, g. It is also known that colored objects such as, for example, colored textiles, fade under the action of sunlight and in particular of ultraviolet light. In addition to being discolored and turned back, some plastics become brittle, lose their elasticity, break and can possibly spoil completely if they are exposed to sunlight. Paints, varnishes and varnishes fall victim to the same effects, even if the transparency problem is not in the foreground.
The demands to be made of a satisfying ultraviolet absorbent are that it should not only be compatible with a wide variety of plastic plastics, rubbers, waxes and the like suitable for the production of films, but that it should be compatible within b the generally occurring WV wavelength range from 250 to 400 millimicrons, that is, close to the visible range of the electromagnetic field, has a particularly high radiation absorption.
In addition, these should be essentially colorless compounds which guarantee that they will not lead to discoloration when used in normally colorless compositions of matter and will not affect their color in dyed, for example colored films or colored textiles.
The object on which the present invention is based consists in a process for the production of organic compounds which, as ultraviolet absorbers, meet the requirements mentioned.
The invention relates to a process for the preparation of compounds of the formula

The process is characterized in that a corresponding 2-alkoxy-1-naphthaldehyde is condensed in the presence of a basic condensation catalyst with a cyanoacetic acid ester of the formula (CNCH2COOR2) n, which Ra and n have the meaning given above.

EMI3.1
where bis-compounds of the formula:
EMI3.2
in which Rt and Rs have the abovementioned meaning g, are obtained.
The general method for the preparation of compounds of the formula (I) consists in the condensation of the relevant 2-alkoxy-1-naphthaldehyde with the desired α-cyanoacetic acid ester in the presence of a basic catalyst. Secondary aliphatic or cycloaliphatic amines such as piperidine have proven suitable as catalysts. The general reaction of aldehydes with active methylene-containing compounds, which leads to methine condensation products with elimination of water, is known as such, and this general method is also used in the same way for the preparation of compounds of the formula (II).
The bases that can be used as catalysts in addition to piperidine include, among others:
Diethylamine, di-n-propylamine, cyclohexylamine,
Morpholine, diethanolamine.
The usual procedure consists essentially in bringing a mixture of the reactants in the presence of the basic catalyst to an elevated temperature until the reaction has ended. A solvent can be used to achieve miscibility of the reactants; in this case the reaction temperature is usually the reflux temperature of the solution formed from solvent and reactants. The most suitable solvent for such a reaction is ethyl alcohol. In the absence of a solvent, temperatures in the range from 75 to 150 C can be used.
The reaction time will vary depending on the specific reactants and the reaction temperature used. In certain cases a relatively low temperature leads after a short time to a quantitative yield, so to speak, of the desired ester, and in other cases a higher temperature and a longer time are necessary to achieve optimal yields; it is no problem for those skilled in the art to find the most effective combination of temperature and time for a given combination of reactants.
After the esterification reaction has ended, the desired ester is isolated, normally by evaporating off the volatile components present in the mixture, namely the water released during the condensation reaction, any alcohol used as solvent and the basic catalyst, provided that it is a liquid and can normally be removed without difficulty by distillation or volatilization. In certain cases the desired ester product can also be isolated by diluting the reaction mixture with a solvent in which the ester precipitates. Thus, methanol can be used as a solvent of this type in many cases.
The resulting slurry is then filtered at low temperature (0 to 5 ° C.) to separate the crystalline product.
The compounds of the formula (II) are prepared in the same way, with the exception that instead of a cyanoacetic acid derivative which has only a single active methylene group, a polycyanoacetate of a polyhydric alcohol and 2 moles of aldehyde per mole of polycyanoacetate are used, whereby the best compounds of the formula (II) can be obtained. Prior to this, of course, the polycyanoacetates are prepared, as a rule by the process described in US Pat. No. 2,426,056, starting from the corresponding polyhydric alcohol and from cyanoacetic acid in the presence of an acidic catalyst.
The compounds prepared according to the invention and used as UV absorbing agents are generally soluble in a wide variety of solvents, plastics, resins, waxes and the like and are therefore particularly suitable for stabilizing a wide variety of different types of organic material. The non-oxyalkylated products are insoluble in water. Those connections which are lesser. Shares of oxyalkyl groups, that is to say up to about 4 or 6 per molecule, are generally soluble in more polar organic solvents and are fairly well dispersible in water.
The compounds with higher proportions of alkylene oxide, i.e. more than about 6 moles per mole of the reactive hydrogen-containing compound, vary from soluble to extremely water-soluble, the solubility increasing with increasing oxyalkyl groups.
The quantitative proportion of the stabilizer to be incorporated is not particularly critical, apart from the fact that it must be present in sufficient quantity to ensure the desired degree of stabilization and that no more should be used than is necessary to achieve this result.
In general, between 0.1 and 10%, calculated on the solids content of the organic material, can be used, and preferably between around 0.5 and about 2%. As can be seen from the above examples, the ultraviolet absorbers can be used not only for stabilizing clear films, plastics and the like, but also for opaque, semi-opaque or translucent material, the surface of which is susceptible to damage by ultraviolet light.
Among the various types of such material, most of which are mentioned in the examples, are foamed plastics, opaque films, coatings and papers, translucent and opaque fibers, transparent and opaque colored plastics, fluorescent pigments, polishes, creams, cosmetic preparations and the like whether they are opaque, clear or translucent. The compounds prepared according to the invention give paints, enamel and lacquer layers excellent protection against the fading of the pigments and dyes contained therein.
The outstanding and important achievement of the compounds prepared according to the invention lies in their remarkable suitability for protecting and stabilizing compositions containing nitrocellulose, polyester, polyethylene and polyoxymethylene against ultraviolet damage. The compounds were found to be at least five times more effective for such stabilization than the previously known oxybenzophenones used for this purpose.
The compounds prepared according to the invention also proved to be very particularly suitable for incorporation in the transparent or cutting backing of the self-adhesive tapes generally used today. When these compounds are used in this way, the adhesive character of the pressure-sensitive adhesive covering is remarkably well preserved. The compounds can not only be incorporated directly into the substrate itself, but can also be applied in any transparent or translucent film-forming coating material adhering to the carrier film of the tape. For example, in the case of tapes made from regenerated cellulose, the carrier film can be coated with one of the cellulose lacquers mentioned in Examples 1 and 2.
Any of the compounds described can be used for direct incorporation into the regenerated cellulose film, but in particular those which have been polyoxyalkylated as described in Example 13, for example. In this case, the regenerated cellulose is advantageously impregnated with it in the gel state before the final drying.

Ethylene glycol di- (a-cyanoacetate) is first prepared according to the process described in Example 1 of US Pat. No. 2,426,056 using an excess of cyanoacetic acid.
One mole of the isolated crude product is condensed with 372 g (2 moles) of 2-methoxy-1-naphthaldehyde in the presence of 10 g of piperidine in 1 liter of alcohol as a solvent by boiling for three hours. The alcohol and the piperidine are evaporated and the compound isolated in this way is used in the raw state as a UV absorber in Polylite 8000 according to the following:
A resin which can be stabilized with the compound obtained in this way can be produced by adding 1 g of a 50% solution of benzoyl peroxide in tricresyl phosphate to the Polylite 8000. Then 0.25 g of the UV absorber obtained according to this example is added to 100 g of resin.
A clear cast body is produced by pouring the polyester between two glass plates 6 mm apart. The resin is cured by placing it in an oven at 65 ° C and then slowly increasing the temperature to 90 C, holding it for one hour, then increasing it to 125 C and finally maintaining it again for an hour at this level . The resulting sheet is more resistant to sunlight than a similar sheet without UV absorber.

manufactured. In a 1 liter flask equipped with a condenser and water separator, 170 g (2 mol) of cyanoacetic acid are mixed with 222 g (2.2 mol) of telrabydrofurfuryl alcohol, 300 cm3 of chloroform and 10 g of a mixed alkane-sulfonic acid catalyst. tors. The mixture is refluxed on the water bath until no more water is absorbed.
The product is then treated with 20% (w / v) sodium hydroxide solution and washed neutral (indicator: Delta paper). This product is extracted with chloroform, dried and, after removal of the solvent, distilled at 140-144 ° C./0.5 mm Hg. The yield is 58%.
This intermediate product (0.37 mol) is then condensed with 0.37 mol of 2A-thoxy-1-naphthaldehyde by adding 0.01 mol of piperidine to the mixture and stirring at 95 ° C. for 1 hour. The reaction mixture is then allowed to cool to 60 ° C. and diluted with methanol. The resulting slurry is filtered at 3 ° C. to separate the crystalline product. The filter cake is washed with 100 cm3 of methanol and air-dried at room temperature.
The product obtained in this way can be used to stabilize polyethylene in the following manner: 0.5 g of the UV absorber from Example 3 are melted together with 99.5 g of polyethylene (PT 95 504 Semet Solvay) at 120 ° C. so that solution occurs . The material is then made using a Carver press; z auisgepresst and produced a film about 3 mm thick. Meat stored behind such an absorbent-containing film is less discolored in the light than behind a similar film without absorbent.

1 mol of 2-methoxy-1-naphthaldehyde and 1 mol of cyano ethyl cyanoacetate are condensed with one another in the presence of 0.05 mol of piperidine and using 800 cm3 of ethanol as the solvent by keeping the mixture at reflux temperature for 2 hours . When the reaction is complete, the reaction mass is cooled to 40 ° C. and diluted with 1 liter of methanol. This forms a paste; this is filtered at 0 C and the crystalline product is isolated in this way.
The testing of this product for its ultra violet absorption capacity gives excellent results.

First, the monoglyceryl ester of cyanoacetic acid is prepared as follows:
94 g (1 mole) cyanoacetic acid, 90% pure
184 grams (2 moles) of glycerin
13.9 g of toluenesulfonic acid
200 cm3 of benzene are refluxed together for 24 hours.
The water released during the reaction is removed with the help of a water trap (18 cm3, i.e. 1 mol of water are collected). The catalyst is then neutralized with sodium bicarbonate solution, the material is saturated with sodium chloride and then extracted with ethyl acetate.
The ethyl acetate extract is dried with anhydrous sodium acetate and the solvent is distilled off. The residue is a light brown oil of

This glyceryl cyanoacetic acid ester is condensed with 2-ethoxy-l-naphthaldehyde in the same way as in Example 1 and with the same molar ratio of the reactants, thus producing the UV absorber.
A cellulose acetate film which contains 1% of the UV absorber obtained in accordance with this example was produced by doping with the following mixture: 3.5 g of ethanol, 6.5 g of methylcaello- solve (ethylene glycol monomethyl ether), 9.0 g of ethyl - acetate, 3.75 g cellulose acetate, 210 g acetone. In addition, the same film was produced without UV absorbers. When exposed to daylight for several days, the film containing the absorbent gave noticeably better protection against the dark coloration of meat stored behind it than the other film, which did not contain any absorbent.

First, glyceryl-1,3-bis (a-cyanoacetate) is prepared according to the process described in Example 1 of US Pat. No. 2,426,056, with the exception that glyceral is used as the polyhydroxy compound.
Then 1 mole of the isolated product is condensed with 2 moles of ethoxy-1-naphthaldehyde in the same manner as in Example 1 above.
Example 20
Example 2 is repeated using CNCH2COOCH2CH2OH as the cyanoacetate compound.
The product of Example 20 can be polyoxyalkylated with ethylene oxide using 1% potassium hydroxide (calculated on the product weight) and 6 moles of ethylene oxide per mole of the product at 80 ° C. in an autoclave. The resulting reaction product has 6 oxyethyl groups.
If 35 moles of ethylene oxide are used, a product is obtained which has 35 oxyethylene groups.
If 20 moles of propylene oxide are used, a product is obtained which contains 20 oxypropyl groups.
In general, in compounds obtained according to the invention, reactive hydroxyl groups can be made to react with an alkylene oxide or another compound which behaves as an oxide, for example, with ethylene oxide, propylene oxide, butylene oxide, butylene dioxide, cyclohexane oxide, epichlorohydrin, butadiene dioxide, isobutylene oxide, styrene oxide and Mixtures of such compounds, etc.
