Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the general formula <FORM:0978722/C1/1> where R1 is an alkyl group of 1-9 carbon atoms and R2 is a hydroxyalkyl, haloalkyl, cyanoalkyl, alkoxyalkyl, hydroxyalkoxyalkyl, carbalkoxy alkyl, aryl or substituted aryl group or a monovalent heterocyclic radical. A large number of groups which R2 may represent are specified, and the heterocyclic groups specified in this connection include furyl, thienyl, pyrryl, indolyl, oxazolyl, pyridyl and quinolyl. The invention comprises also compounds in which the radical R2 is replaced by a bridging group, e.g. -CH2 CH2- or -CH2C6H4CH2-, many other bridging groups being specified. In this case the products are of the general formula <FORM:0978722/C1/2> R3 being the bridging group. The products may be prepared by condensing an appropriate 2-alkoxy -1- naphthaldehyde with an appropriate a -cyanoacetic acid ester in the presence of a basic catalyst, e.g. piperidine, preferably in a solvent at 75-150 DEG C. Such of the products as contain reactive hydroxyl groups may be treated with oxyalkylating or equivalent reagents, e.g. alkylene oxides, butylene dioxide, cyclohexene oxide, epichlorhydrin, butadiene dioxide or styrene oxide. Examples are given. U.S.A. Specification 2,426,056 is referred to.ALSO:Materials such as polyoxymethylene, polyethylene and unsaturated polyester resins are protected against ultra-violet light by the presence of a compound of general formula <FORM:0978722/C3/1> where R1 is an alkyl group of 1-9 carbon atoms and R2 is a hydroxyalkyl, haloalkyl, cyanoalkyl, alkoxyalkyl, hydroxyalkoxyalkyl, carbalkoxy alkyl, aryl or substituted aryl group or a monovalent heterocyclic radical, or one in which the radical R2 is replaced by a bridging group, e.g. -CH2CH2- or -CH2C6H4CH2-, in which case the compounds are of the general formula <FORM:0978722/C3/2> R3 being the bridging group. Examples are given.ALSO:Materials such as polyethylene terephthalate fibres are protected against ultra-violet light by treatment with a compound of general formula <FORM:0978722/D1-D2/1> where R1 is an alkyl group of 1-9 carbon atoms and R2 is a hydroxyalkyl, haloalkyl, cyanoalkyl, alkoxyalkyl, hydroxyalkoxyalkyl, carbalkoxy alkyl, aryl or substituted aryl group or a monovalent heterocyclic radical, or one in which the radical R2 is replaced by a bridging group, e.g.-CH2CH2- or -CH2C6H4CH2-, in which case the products of the general formula <FORM:0978722/D1-D2/2> R3 being the bridging group. Examples are given.
