Abstract
NEW MATERIAL:Amphoteric ammonium compounds having hydrophobic hydrocarbyl groups and hydrophilic ammonium and sulfite groups in the molecule shown as formulaI(R1 is substituent mainly consisting of 8-30C hydrocarbon; R2 is H, methyl; R3-5 are substituents mainly consisting of unpolymerizable hydrocarbons wherein the total number of carbon atoms is 3-8 and they may be independent from each other or incorporate to form heterocycle).
EXAMPLE: The compound of formula II.
USE: Surface active agents, they are characterized by having both anionic and cationic groups in the sme molecule and no counter ion of low molecular weight.
PREPARATION: The reaction between an oxirane compound of formula III, sulfur dioxide, and a tertiary amine of formula IV gives the objective compound of formula I.
