Method for constructing a light craft and craft obtained by this method The present invention relates to a method for constructing a light craft, such as, in particular, a nautical beach craft, in polyester resin reinforced with fiberglass.
On the majority of well-equipped beaches, such machines are usually rented. They are subjected to very harsh conditions of use, which generally limits their duration of use to only a few seasons.
The object of the present invention is to produce such a light boat having the best qualities of strength, tightness and lightness, endowed with lines pleasing to the eye and excellent nautical qualities, while being of simple construction.
The purpose of the use of such a material for the construction of these boats is to make it possible to obtain hulls whose tightness is total and durable, despite their very lightness.
In general, the assemblies of boats produced by molding in two or more parts are made by flat gluing joined together of the various parts coming from the molding. This fairly simple process makes it necessary to keep an unsightly projection which is often camouflaged with a plastic section or with a wooden strip.
The method according to the present invention is characterized in that one carries out by a first molding, on the one hand the deck of the boat, on the other hand its hull, in that one provides, by a second molding, the two parts of the boat coming from the first molding, from grooves, and in that they are assembled by splicing and welding.
The appended drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of the process according to the invention, and an embodiment of a boat obtained by this process.
Fig. 1 shows the mold of the hull of the hull seen from above in perspective; fig. 2 shows the mold of the deck of the boat seen from above in perspective; fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view, through a vertical plane, of the two molds with their respective moldings made; fig. 4 shows the shell coming out of mold and ready to receive the second molding;
fig. 5 shows the device which, placed in the upper part of the boat (bridge) will be used to produce longitudinal grooves cooperating with the assembly by splicing; fig. 6 is a cross-sectional view, by a vertical plane, of the hull, the second molding having been made;
fig. 7, is a cross-sectional view through a vertical plane, of the bridge during the production of the second molding; fig. 8 is a vertical sectional view, perpendicular to the axis of the boat, showing how the assembly of the two parts of the boat is made;
fig. 9 is a perspective view showing the molds of the seat, and the seat obtained with the aid of these molds; fig. 10 is a view of the craft obtained using the method; figs. 11 and 12 are views in vertical section, perpendicular to their axis, of boats of known types illustrating the assembly methods carried out until now.
There is shown in FIG. 1, the mold intended to produce the hull of the boat. This mold 1 is constructed in three parts, in order to facilitate the unmoulding of the head of the boat which has a particular shape intended to serve as a handle for handling and transporting the boat. The two removable parts allowing the demolding of the head are parts 2 and 3. For the molding operations, these two parts are assembled using bolts, for example.
The bottom 4 of the mold 1 is provided with undulations which are intended to reinforce the bottom of the hull and to facilitate the paddling of the boat by playing the role of a roll keel.
The mold 5 shown in FIG. 2 'is intended for molding the deck of the boat. This mold is built with transverse corrugations 6, flattened, which are intended to form on the bridge transverse corrugations which reinforce the bridge and which ensure better adhesion of the user on it.
Construction molds can be made of plaster, wood, metal or poly ester laminate. Polyester laminate molds will preferably be employed.
The molding of the two parts of the shell is carried out according to the known method called contact. The surface of the mold is coated beforehand with a mold release agent, then the polyester is applied to the mold in successive layers with impregnation of the reinforcements (glass fiber mat) as and when.
After polymerization, the part is taken out of the mold by hand (release from the deck of the boat) or by dismantling the mold (release from the hull by removing the removable parts 2 and 3 of the handle-shaped head, fig. 1 ).
It is also possible to mold the two parts of the boat by any other known method. For example, one can use the method known as vacuum mooring, by using, to manufacture each of the two parts of the boat, two molds, one hollow and the other in hump, leaving between them a space representing the thickness of the part to be made. The fabrics are placed on the bump mold; the hollow mold is placed on top and the resin is poured into a gutter around the mold at its lower part.
The vacuum is then created between the two molds (from above) and the resin occupies the space between the two molds under the action of atmospheric pressure.
It is also possible, using the same slack as those used for the contact molding, to proceed according to the known method which consists in simultaneously projecting onto the mold, using special guns, the polyester and the fiberglass. cut, mixing occurring during projection. This process thus avoids the possible deterioration of the glass fiber mats which may occur during their impregnation with the resin, on the parts of tormented shapes.
In fig. 3, we can clearly see the two parts of the boat deck 7 and hull 8, obtained from two respective molds 5 and 1. We can also notice the undulations with which the bottom of the hull of the boat is provided.
The two parts of the craft thus obtained, the partitions intended for the assembly by bouvillage, of these two parts: hull and deck.
We begin by making the longitudinal partition 12 which will separate the shell 8 (FIG. 6) into two capacities. For this, a profiled steel strip 9 is used which, in FIG. 4, has been shown placed in the bottom of the shell 8 coming from the demolding. This steel blade 9 is placed along the longitudinal axis of the shell and rests thereon. With the aid of metal riders 10 regularly spaced over its entire length.
The two sides of the steel blade, previously provided with a mold release agent, are coated with resin which, after polymerization and release from the mold, gives a longitudinal groove defined between the two partitions 11 and 11a (fig. 6) obtained by this second molding.
After having filled it with resin, a longitudinal partition 12 (FIG. 6) which can be, for example, made of wood, and which delimits the two capacities 13 and 14 which will be watertight after the assembly of the two parts of the boat.
Grooves are then produced under the boat deck intended for assembly by splicing the deck onto the hull.
For this, the device shown in perspective in FIG. 5. This device is composed of two elements, one 15 which follows the shape of the circumference of the bridge, the other 16 which is arranged along the longitudinal axis of the bridge. Cross members 17 ensure the transverse rigidity of the device.
The device shown in FIG. 5 is placed in the bridge 5 coming from the molding and held against the lips of the bridge using presses. It has been shown in section in FIG. 7. We can clearly see in this section the element 15 which goes around the bridge, .and the element 16 which coincides with the vertical plane of symmetry of the bridge.
The thickness of the element 15 must be the same as that of the vertical walls of the shell 8. Likewise, the thickness of the element 16 must be the same as that of the added bulkhead 12 (FIG. 6).
The device shown in FIG. 5 can be made of steel, preferably.
After having provided them with a mold release agent, the opposite faces of the device of FIG. 5 which, after polymerization and demoulding, gives, on the one hand, the partition 24 which runs vertically all along the deck parallel to the vertical wall of this deck and inside this deck and, on the other hand , the two longitudinal partitions 18 and 18a which delimit a groove whose width is that of the element 16, therefore of the added partition 12 of FIG. 6.
During this operation of producing the grooves delimited by the lips of the deck and the partition 24, on the one hand, and by the partitions 18 and 18a, on the other hand, the deck is returned to its mold 5, so as to prevent 'it does not distort.
All these partitions produced, it remains. To assemble by splicing and welding the two parts of the boat. This welding is carried out with resin reinforced with cut fiberglass which ensures the perfect seal of the whole.
There is shown in FIG. 8, the assembly of the two parts of the boat. It is clearly seen in this figure how this assembly is carried out, by bouvetage, of the two parts of the hull. The bridge 7 is returned to its own mold 5, in order to prevent it from deforming, then the grooves 24 and 18 are completely filled with resin reinforced with fiberglass. The sides 8 and the central bulkhead 12 of the hull are then fully retracted into the grooves of the deck; they are kept there by means of presses until the polymerization is complete.
This way of proceeding makes it possible to obtain a weld by making, thanks to the overflow of the resin overflow. The assembly is then removed and the boat is finished by cleaning the resin drips caused by the overflow. After this operation, two completely sealed capacities 13 and 14 are obtained.
The seat with which the boat is fitted is produced using the same molding processes mentioned above. For this molding, the two identical molds 19 and 20 (FIG. 9) are used, giving, after molding, the part 21 of the seat in the form of a torus. The part 22 which serves as a backrest and a seat is mounted, from the mold 23, according to the known method called contact. As can be seen in FIG. 9, this seat has the appearance of a ring buoy which, being able to float, can serve as a lifebuoy.
There is shown in FIGS. 11 and 12 of the known assembly methods not giving full satisfaction.
The assembly shown in FIG. 11 is produced by bonding the two flanges 25 and 26 respectively of the deck 27 and of the hull 28; this unsightly protrusion is then concealed with the aid of a plastic section or with the aid of a wooden strake 29. This protrusion imposes an additional width on both sides of the boat, hindering the ascent, on the deck of the boat, of the user, it also harms the user when the latter paddles standing on the boat.
Another known way of assembling the two parts of the boat is illustrated in FIG. 12. The bridge 30 is executed with a part projecting widely. The void which exists during the assembly between the edge of the deck 30 and the vertical edge of the hull 31 is filled with the aid of puttying. This one is difficult to achieve perfectly.
In addition, during the sealant work, the shell may be deformed under the pressure resulting from the sealant operation due to its small thickness (deformation shown in the dotted drawing), so that the seal is not no perfect. The assembly, by bouvetage, according to the process described above, overcomes all these drawbacks and makes it possible to obtain completely sealed shells, even if they are made very light.
In fig. 10 shows the general appearance of the boat obtained using the method described. The top of the deck has flattened undulations which serve as reinforcement and which can withstand the efforts of users who climb without precautions on the boat. In addition, these undulations increase the user's grip on the deck by preventing slips on a part which is very often made slippery due to the constant wetting by the water.
The undulations with which the bottom of the hull is provided improve paddling by allowing the boat to avoid oscillations on either side of the direction in which it is moving.
By its construction, the hull has two capacities 13 and 14 which are waterproof and form a safety box. In the event of accidental flooding, by perforation of the hull, for example, of one of these capacities, the boat continues to float. One can possibly place within these capacities of the light materials, such as soft its expanded plastics, polyurethane foams, or even cork. This provides significant emergency buoyancy, even in the event of a serious accident.
The particular profile of the bow of the boat, in the form of a handle, is intended to facilitate handling and transport of the boat. In addition, at the rear and below the hull, there is a deep shell intended to facilitate grip, facilitating the handling and transport of the container.
The particular shape of the submerged part of the boat, with its grooves, facilitates paddling, the paddler being placed upright at the rear, a passenger occupying the seat.
