Vehicle supported by at least one air cushion This invention relates to a vehicle supported by at least one air cushion, comprising an endless strip of flexible material enclosing a space for the air cushion, this strip having upper and lower strands extending in the direction of the front towards the rear of the vehicle, respectively above and below said space, the lower strand of the strip resting on the surface on which the vehicle is traveling and defining the bottom of said space, while the upper section supports the vehicle,
means being arranged to fix the position of the vehicle body relative to the strip in the front-to-rear direction, the upper strand of the strip moving forward relative to the lower strand when moving the vehicle forward.
The vehicle according to the invention is distinguished by the fact that the perimeter of the strip is constant over the major part of the width of said space, in that the upper and lower strands extend horizontally in said front-rear direction, and in that each of the two edges of the strip defines an opening, sealing means being provided in each of these openings to reduce or prevent air leakage of the cushion enclosed by the strip from the lateral sides thereof. this.
In order to make the invention better understood and to show how it can be implemented, reference will be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawings in which FIG. 1 is a schematic side elevational view of an air cushion vehicle, FIG. 2 is a schematic side elevational view of a modified form of the vehicle of FIG. 1, fig. 3 and 4 are schematic side elevational views illustrating alternative drive arrangements of the vehicle of Figs. 1 and 2,
fig. 5 is a perspective view of part of the vehicles of the fia. 1 to 4, figs. 6 and 7 are cross-sectional elevational views of two vehicles resting on an air cushion, FIG. 8 is a perspective view with parts broken away of a part of a vehicle resting on an air cushion, FIG. 9 is a perspective view of part of a band enclosing the air cushion of a vehicle resting on an air cushion, FIG. 10 is an explanatory diagram,
fig. 11 is a schematic perspective view of a sealing device for a strip enclosing the air cushion of a vehicle resting on an air cushion, FIGS. 12-14 are schematic elevational views of various sealing devices for the bands enclosing the airbags of air-cushioned vehicles, FIG. 15 is a schematic side elevational view of a portion of a vehicle resting on air cushion, and FIG. 16 is a sectional view of part of a vehicle resting on an air cushion.
The vehicle of FIG. 1 comprises a box 1 resting on an air cushion 2 by means of rollers 3 carried by consoles 4 on the lower side of the box 1. The cushion 2. is enclosed by a flexible strip 5 of rubber, rubber syn thetic or similar flexible material. The upper and lower strands of the strip 5 extend in a forward direction towards the rear of the vehicle. The rollers 3 rest on the upper strand of the strip 5 in order to support the body 1 of the vehicle while the lower strand of the strip 5 rests on the ground or the water 6 on which the vehicle is moving.
The strip 5 extends substantially the entire length of the vehicle and substantially the entire width of the vehicle. The crate 1 is held in place with respect to the strip 5 in the front rear direction by rollers 7 which rest on the anterior and posterior parts of the strip 5, the rollers 7 being carried by consoles 8 projecting downwardly below. the ends of the body 1. The rollers 3 are arranged to be driven in order to move the upper strand of the strip 5 forward with respect to the lower strand in the direction of the arrow A so that the vehicle is propelled forward in the direction of arrow B.
Air is supplied to the cushion 2 by the lateral sides of the strip 5 by means of a compressor (not shown) carried by the body 1.
Fig. 2 shows a modified form of the vehicle of FIG. 1 in which flexible lips 9 carried by the body 1 bear on the anterior and posterior parts of the strip 5 to seal the space 10 between the upper strand of the strip 5 and the lower side of the body 1. Said compressor is arranged to supply air to the neck sin 2 as well as to the space 10 such that the cushion 2 and the space 10 are maintained at the same or similar pressures. In this case, the rollers 3 do not carry a significant part of the weight of the body 1 of the vehicle, but serve only to ensure the position of the body of the vehicle relative to the strip 5.
Rollers 3A arranged inside the strip 5 cooperate with the rollers 3 and support the upper strand of the strip 5.
Fig. 3 shows an alternative way of driving the strip 5. In this case a belt 11 passes over the rollers 3, the lower strand of the belt 11 being in contact with the upper strand of the strip 5. One (or two) of the end rollers 3 is (or are) driven so that the belt 11 runs around the rollers 3 to drive the upper run of the belt 5 in the direction of the arrow A. The body 1 of the vehicle is held in position in the forward and backward direction with respect to the strip 5 by rollers 7 on consoles 8 as in FIG. 1, the rollers 7 and the consoles 8 being omitted in FIG. 3.
Fig. 4 shows yet another method of dragging the strip 5. In the arrangement of FIG. 4 the rear part of the strip 5 passes between two rollers 12 and 13, one of which is inside the strip 5 and the other is outside the strip. Rollers 12 and 13 are urged towards each other by spring means (not shown) and one of them is arranged to be rotated by drive means (not shown). It will be understood that the setting in rotation of the driven roller will advance the strip 5 to propel the vehicle.
The strip 5 is preferably formed with protrusions or recesses to reduce the sliding between the strip 5 and its driving members and between the strip 5 and the surface with which its lower strand cooperates in order to propel the vehicle.
Arrangements are made to reduce or prevent air leakage from the cushion 2 through the lateral sides of the strip 5 in the directions of the arrows C (Fig. 5). Figs. 6 to 14 show various arrangements for reducing such air leaks. In the position of FIG. 6, hollow side members 14 project downwardly from the side sides of the body 1 and are supplied with air by said compressor through ducts 15. The hollow side members 14 bring the air supplied to them to direct nozzles. downwards 16 which form air curtains 17 which prevent air leaks from the cushion 2.
In the vehicle of FIG. 7, horizontal flanges 18 directed inwards and carried by side elements 19 projecting downwardly from the body 1 protrude into the space surrounded by the strip 5. Each flange 18 carries a flexible suspended skirt 2.0 which can be constructed as described in any one of UK patents NIJ 958996, No 952771 and NI, 952772. One of the side members 19 is hollow and is supplied with air by said compressor, this element serving as a duct bringing air to the cushion 2 and to the space 10 between the upper end of the strip 5 and the underside of the body 1.
The elements 19 prevent leakage from the part of the cushion located above the flanges 18 while the skirts 20 reduce air leakage from the part of the cushion located below the flanges 18.
In the arrangement of FIG. 8 the two edges of the strip 5 are each provided with a flexible skirt 21 directed vertically and inwardly which can be constructed as described in one of said British patents. The inner edge of the skirt 21 is attached to sliders 22. which are engaged in a guide path 23 in the form of a flat closed loop, the section of this guide path being U-shaped, the middle part of which is turned towards the outside while the free edges of the wings of this path are directed inwards. The loop formed by the path 23 is closed by a panel 24 provided with an opening 25 through which air can be introduced into the cushion.
The panels 24 are fixed to the lower side of the body 1 (not shown in Fig. 8) by consoles (not shown).
Fig. 9 shows part of a side edge of the bottom of a strip 5 enclosing the air bag 2 of a vehicle resting on an air bag. A row of gear teeth 26 is disposed on the inside face of the strip 5 near the outside edge 27 of the strip. The gear teeth 26 mesh with toothed wheels (not shown) carried by the body 1 of the vehicle, the wheels serving to drive the band 5. Disks (not shown) are attached coaxially to the wheels on either side of these, the discs being of larger diameter than the toothed wheels.
The discs cooperate with the teeth 26 passing around the wheels to prevent lateral movement of the teeth 26 and therefore of the strip 5 with respect to the vehicle.
A flexible membrane 28 is attached to the strip 5 on each side thereof. The two membranes 28 are arranged between the two rows of teeth 26, and the cushion 2 is included between the two membranes 2.8. Each membrane is made of a sheet of flexible and elastic material, such as rubber or synthetic rubber. The membrane 28 has in principle the shape of a hollow cone, the wall of which has been folded forward and backward along a series of fold lines parallel to its base to form the configuration shown in FIG. 9. The base of the cone which is open is fixed on the inside face of the strip. The top of the cone is located at 29.
If the cone of fig. 9 was unfolded, the membrane 28 would take the form shown schematically in FIG. 10. To prevent such unfolding, straps 30 are attached to the inner fold lines of the two membranes 28, one edge of each strap 30 being attached to a fold line of the membrane 28 on one side of the web 5 and 1. the other edge of the same belt being attached to the corresponding fold line of the membrane 28 on the other side of the strip 5. The straps 30 serve to divide the cushion 2 into a series of compartments, the series comprising a compartment. centrally surrounded by successively larger compartments of flattened annular shape.
These compartments may communicate through holes formed in the straps or may not communicate with each other.
When using the vehicle, the strip 5 of which is provided with sealing devices formed by the membranes 28, the strip is driven to propel the vehicle and the membranes 2, 8 rotate around their tops 29. The folds of the material of the membrane 28 open and close during such rotation, the more closed condition being indicated by the zigzag line 31 and the more open condition being indicated by the zigzag line 32. These movements opening and closing of the folds causes stresses in the sheet material which, however, are insignificant and too low to damage the material.
In practice, obviously, because of the pressure prevailing in the cushion, the folds take an arcuate shape as indicated by the dotted lines 32A. In the case where the compartments formed in the cushion 2 by the belts 30 communicate with each other, the cushion can be supplied with air by a compressor mounted on the body of the vehicle, by means of a flexible pipe (not shown) connected to the top 29 of one of the membranes 28 by a rotating pipe joint.
It will be understood that the belts 30 could, if desired, be replaced by a series of cords or metallic threads connecting the corresponding folds of the two membranes 28.
Fig. It shows a sealing device which can replace the membranes of the arrangement of FIG. 9. The sealing device of FIG. 11 consists of a series of hollow cones 33 having hexagonal open bases, the cones each being formed of resilient sheet material such as rubber or synthetic rubber. Each edge of the base of each cone 33 is fixed to the edge of another cone 33 or to the inner face of the strip 5. The tops 34 of the cones 33 of the sealing device of FIG. 1l are directed towards the inside of the cushion 2 ..
In other words, the tops of the cones of the sealing device on one side of the strip 5 are directed towards the tops of the cones of the sealing device on the opposite side of the strip 5. Parallel wire horns or wires connect them. som mets 34 of a sealing device to the tops 34 of the other sealing device. When using a vehicle having a strip 5 provided with sealing devices as shown in fig. 11, the hexagonal shaped bases deform when the strip 5 is driven and the seals rotate. However, the resulting deformation of the material is not sufficient to damage the material.
The cones 33 of the sealing device of FIG. 11 are not limited to hexagonal open base cones as shown in Figs. 11 and 12. Other cone configurations may be employed, for example some of the cones may have an octagonal base while others have a square base as shown in fig. 13, or some cones may have a hexagonal base while others have a rhomboid-shaped base as shown in fig. 14. In addition, the side faces of the cones do not necessarily have to be initially flat. Each cone may be dome shaped, the dome having a polygonal base.
In each case, of course, the bases of the cones are open. In addition, each cone 33 can be folded in the same way as the membrane 28 of FIG. 9.
The strip 5 having sealing devices like those of FIG. 9 or of FIG. 11 can be mounted on a vehicle body 1 as shown schematically in FIG. 15. In this case, the anterior end of the strip 5 passes around toothed wheels 35 and the rear end of the strip passes around toothed wheels 36, the upper end of the strip 5 cooperating with idle rollers 37. The rollers 37 and the wheels 35 and 36 are carried by the body 1 and the front or rear wheels are driven.
Idler rollers 37 keep the main part of the upper strand of the web 5 below the level of the parts of the web which do not feel on the wheels 35 and 36.
If desired, the strip 5 can be formed of flat flexible blades 5A arranged parallel side by side which are interconnected by thinner intermediate flexible blades 5B having corrugations extending in the direction of the length of the blades. 5A and 5B. Such a construction allows the strip 5 to easily increase its width. This would be advantageous when the strip 5 is rolling over an obstacle the width of which is less than the width of the strip. For the sake of simplification of the representation, the vehicle body 1 of the above-mentioned arrangements is shown as being supported by a single cushion 2.
However, it will be understood that the vehicle body 1 can also be supported by several cushions 2 each enclosed in its own associated flexible strip 5. In fact, it is desirable for steering and guiding the vehicle to employ more than one cushion enclosed in the vehicle. a band.
