<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

Improvements to vehicles.
The present invention relates to boats having means for producing a cushion of gas formed and in part contained below the boat by skirts which can be brought into an active position when it is desired to support the boat on a cushion. air or gas.
The object of the present invention is to provide a boat which holds the sea well and which has means by which it can move from one place to another like an air-cushion vehicle at a speed greater than that which it is capable of. can reach like boat.
According to the invention, a boat comprising means for producing an air cushion comprises

a hull comprising a median keel and a fin or beach which extends all around the keel as well as a retracted skirt. ble placed around the outer periphery of the beach.
According to another feature of the invention, a boat comprising means serving to produce an air cushion, comprises a hull comprising a central keel 'and a range which extends all around the keel, a retractable flexible outer skirt. placed around the outer periphery of the beach and a retractable flexible inner skirt placed around the inner periphery of the beach.
The outer skirt is preferably inflatable and can be moved from its retracted position to its extended position by introducing pressurized fluid therein and the lower edge of the inner skirt is spaced from the lower edge of the outer skirt by nozzles which are to be attached. the edges relative to each other and which form peripheral nozzles which help to produce and maintain the air cushion on which the boat is supported when operating as an air cushion vehicle .
The inner skirt is supported between its ends, for example by retaining cables, and comprises retracting members such as cables capable of causing the inner and outer skirts to pass from their extended position to their position retracted against the beach.
But, if a non-flexible skirt is used, this skirt can have the form of several overlapping plates, for example of steel plate or of light alloy, hinged at the outer periphery of the pad and arranged in a like manner. fluid-tight substance when extended. The length of the plates measured in the direction of the periphery of the boat varies according to their position on this periphery, the longest plates being on the sides where the curvature of the periphery is minimum and the shortest being at the bow. from the boat or. the curvature is maximum. The skirt in its flexible form

can also be inflatable and constitutes a preferred embodiment which will be described below.
The skirt is retained in its extended position and is retracted by members such as cables arranged so that when the skirt is extended they resist the force exerted outwardly on the skirt produced by the air cushion. under pressure, these cables also serve to return the skirt from its extended position to its retracted position against the beach.

In one embodiment of the invention, a boat is used comprising a hull 1 comprising a

middle keel 2 of appreciable width compared to the actual width of the boat and of the desired height, and a platform above the keel 2 forcing a beach 3 which extends all around the keel 2. Beach 3 and keel 2 together form a rigid construction with the beach being any width desired and extending sideways and slightly upward to the extent desired.
An inflatable outer skirt 4 of flexible material extends around the periphery of the pad 3 and has two walls 5 and 6 connected to each other by flexible diaphragms 7 (Fig. 7) to drill several tubes. connected to each other and extending downward 10, closed at their lower ends or free ends and arranged side by side. The upper or open ends 8 (Fig. 5) of the tubes 10 communicate with a high pressure air supply line 9 which runs horizontally around the periphery of the pad 3 just above the periphery. of the outer skirt 4.
The height of the outer skirt 4 is slightly less than the width; beach 3 so that the skirt 4 can be retracted inward and upward against the underside of the beach 3 which extends inward towards the outer vertical wall of the keel 2. The skirt outer 4 can be divided into as many independently movable separate sections as necessary, each section comprising several tubes 10 fixed longitudinally to their neighbors. The height of the outer skirt 4, in its extended position, is preferably such that it does not extend below the rigid keel 2.
Above the upper surface of the structure comprising the keel 2 and the deck 3 are the cabins 11, the deck 12 and the duct 13 intended to supply pressurized air discharged by one or more lift fans 14 towards outside over the top surface of deck 3 and
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
around its periphery in a passage 15 formed on one side by the periphery of the pad 3 and on the other side by the high pressure air duct 9.
The pressurized air coming from the lift fans 14 is introduced into a flexible double skirt provided below the pad 3 and formed by the outer skirt 4 described above and by an inner skirt 16 described below, and is then expelled through nozzles 17 provided at the lower inner edge of the outer skirt to produce and maintain a cushion of air below the boat. The path followed by the pressurized air is indicated by arrows in Figs. 2, 3 and 5 and in a variant of the invention in FIG. 8.
The inner skirt 16 comprises a ply of suitable flexible material) substantially fluid-tight, for example terylene fabric coated with neoprene rubber, which starts from the lower surface of the pad 3 to which it is attached near its junction at the keel 2 in a substantially fluid-tight manner, and which extends outward to the free or lower edge of the outer skirt from which it is spaced at certain intervals by appropriate tie rods to form nozzles 17 through which the pressurized air coming from the flexible double skirt is expelled in a peripheral jet.
Appropriate profiled elements 18 and 19 of fluid-tight sponge material are provided near the nozzles 17 on the inner and outer skirts.
16 and 4 respectively to form a non-turbulent outlet for the pressurized air delivered by the nozzles.
The inner skirt 16 is supported in its middle by a series of tubes 20 which extend longitudinally approximately parallel to the outer skirt 4 and by a series of retaining cables 21 spaced around the periphery of the pad.
3 and fixed at their lower ends to the tubes 20 and at their upper ends below the outer edge of the range 3.
The flexible inner skirt 16 is therefore able to expand.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
dre downwards and inwards in the zone 22 of the air cushion only to the extent permitted by the retaining clamps 21 and the tubes 20 and, when pressurized air enters the flexible double skirt, the inner skirt 16 swells downward and inward on either side of the tubes 20 away from the outer skirt 4 but preferably does not extend below the keel.
The flexible double skirt is provided with retractor cables 23 which are attached at spaced points along the periphery of the peripheral nozzles 17. The retractor cables 23 extend inwardly to housings 24 provided in the range 3 which. contain winches 25 on which the retracting cables 23 are sent. Appropriate means are provided for driving the winch drums 25, for example electric motors, from the upper face of the deck 3, these motors being controlled by the crew of the boat.
The housings 24 in which the winches 25 are mounted below the deck are placed in the area covered by the double skirt; flexible between the outer skirt 4 and the inner skirt 16 and are protected from water.
The flexible inner skirt is provided at certain intervals with suitably disposed drainage holes 26 which allow water trapped in the bulging portions of the inner skirt to drain.
The zone 22 of the air cushion bounded by the flexible double skirt comprising the outer skirt 4, the inner skirt 16 and the pressurized air expelled by the peripheral nozzles 17 is divided into compartments for stability purposes. The keel 2 advantageously serves as a longitudinal barrier for this purpose and its efficiency is increased by providing a stabilizing nozzle 27 along its lower central axis. Pressurized air is supplied to the stabilizer nozzle 27 through the main duct 13 by
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
Through the secondary conduits 28 which extend into the keel 2, inflatable obturator elements 29 are provided at the lower end of the stabilizing nozzle 27 so that the nozzle can be closed, when desired.
The side partitions of the air cushion area which are not shown may be in the form of simple flexible walls, bulbous pressurized members or flexible ducts having nozzles at their lower ends.
Flexible and / or inflatable stabilizer pin elements may extend the stabilizer nozzle 27 of the rigid keel, if required.
In order to bring the flexible double skirt into its active position, high pressure air is introduced, which can be drawn from the compressor, one of the main gas turbine engines or any other suitable source, in the high pressure air duct 9 which communicates with the outer skirt 4,
The skirt is thus pushed downwards and outwards from its retracted position in which it is located below the pad 3 and in contact with the latter, FIG. 4., to a substantially vertical position. At the same time, the winch drums 25 unwind the retracting cables 23 and the element 29 sealing the stabilizer fitting is deflated.
The inner skirt
16 is pulled from its stowed position (Fig. 4) to its active position in which it forms the inner side of the flexible double skirt. During this outward movement which is assisted by the lift fans 14 which deliver pressurized air into the flexible double skirt, the retaining cables
21 remain taut and the inner skirt swells down and inwards.
Pressurized lift air exits from nozzles 17 and stabilization nozzles 27 to form and maintain an air cushion which lifts the boat so that the position of the water line 30 relative to the boat changes from that of a boat in FIG. 4 to that of a vehicle
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
air cushion in Figs. 2 and 3.
To retract the flexible double skirt, the lift fans 14 are stopped, the high pressure air supply from the supply duct 9 which serves the outer skirt 4 is cut off, and the winches 25 of the retracting cables are actuated for Feed the cables 23. The retaining cables 21 remain. stretched and pivot inwards around their point of attachment below the pad 3 with the tubes 20. The outer skirt is pulled inwards by the retracting cables 23 with the inner skirt 16 which folds inwards. two under the action 'of the retaining cables 21, the loggueur of which is less than the height of the flexible double skirt and the tubes 20.
The flexible inner skirt 16 is therefore pulled upwards and inwards so as to come to be placed in two halves folded against each other against the inner part of the underside of the pad 3 and the outer skirt 4 is pulled against the track 3, as indicated by chain lines at 40 in Fig. 5 which shows the retracted double skirt. The flexible double skirt can be locked in its retracted position and the vehicle can then move like a boat.
Another embodiment of the invention is shown in FIG. 8 in which the inner skirt and its retaining means are omitted.
This embodiment comprises an outer skirt 4 which functions in the same way as that described above and which serves as a peripheral wall for the air cushion. Pressurized air is supplied through the duct 13 into the area of the air cushion 22 inside the periphery of the skirt 4, forming an air cushion vehicle of the collecting chamber type.
It should be noted that numerous modifications can be made to the boat without departing from the scope of the invention. For example, the nozzle shutter n e
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
should not be limited to stabilizing nozzles but can also be applied to peripheral nozzles.
In addition, this shutter does not have to be of the inflatable type but may, for example, have the form of a spring valve prestressed towards the closed position and opened by the pressure prevailing in the duct. it will also be understood that the space inside the keel and the beach can be occupied by engines, tanks, for example for fuel and water, as well as by additional cabins *
