Description
Root-resistant or root-repellent bituminous sealant and potting compound. The root tips of certain plants that are near z. JB. underground water pipes are known to strive with astonishing accuracy and perseverance where they smell water, and overcome obstacles of all kinds with astonishing power.
They even gain access to the water through watertight socket connections. This is easier for them to do with pipe connections sealed with the usual potting compounds, although these potting compounds are made from bitumen and fillers. such as kaolin, talc, asbestos, sand, rock and quartz flour and the like.
Man. has therefore tried for a long time to make such seals root-proof. However, this has so far only been possible with limited success.
It has now been found that bituminous seals and casting compounds of the type mentioned provide good protection against the ingrowth of roots. offer, that means that they are root-proof or
are even largely root-repellent if they are compatible with bitumen and asphalt compounds, not noticeably soluble in water, low-volatility herbicides, such as heavy metal salts of polychlorophenols, in particular of pentachlorophenol,
or esterification products of such phenols with higher carboxylic acids or polybasic acids as well as the compounds of polyvalent metals with polychlorophenols on the one hand and higher carboxylic acids on the other hand, also herbicides such as 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid and a-naphthylacetic acid as well their salts, esters and amides,
also contain phenyl-N-isopropylcarbaminate and p-chlorophenyldimethylurea.
Suitable compounds for the purposes of this inven tion are, for. B. zinc or copper pentachlorophenolate, pentachlorophenyl lauric acid ester, bis-pentachlorophenyl carbonate, pentachlorophenyl isooctyl carbonate, pentachlorophenyl zinc naphthenate, 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetate, 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetate, 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetate butylglycol ester, 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetate and trichloro-2,4-phenoxyacetamido-butylglycol ester, 2,4,5-phenoxyacetate 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid amide. The herbicides mentioned have a surprisingly powerful effect,
so that good protection is generally achieved even with small amounts. In some cases, additions between about 0.1 and about 0.30 / a are sufficient, but larger amounts can also be used, e.g. B. up to about 5 0 / a, the herbicides mentioned are added to the casting compounds.
The addition of the substances mentioned to such potting compounds surprisingly has the effect that the roots of the plants, in particular tree and bush roots, usually before they come into closer contact with the compounds containing the active substance, their direction of growth at some distance from the Reversing masses without them and thus the plants becoming sick or dying.
Should individual root tips nevertheless penetrate to the surface of the casting compound or into the same, then they will die in the upper layers of the compound.
The seals and potting compounds according to the invention can be used for a wide variety of purposes, except in the case of the already mentioned underground water pipes and pipes of any kind or in the case of masonry that is in contact with the earth or sunk into the earth, in the case of road surfaces and the same.
Example 1 casting compounds with 2.5 / u zinc pentachlorophenolate are fully effective against the ingrowth of roots and practically do not lose their effectiveness even with repeated heating.
Example 2 An asphalt sealing compound with 0.60 / a addition of butyl 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetate is fully effective against root ingrowth.
Example 3 Bituminous sealing compounds with a content of 0.7 / a of 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid butyl glycol ester are protected against the ingrowth of roots a , even if the compounds were previously heated to 160-180 C several times.
