Educational device The present invention relates to an educational device.
One of the current problems in education is that different people learn at different speeds. In other words, the material is taught generally too slowly or too quickly, too quickly for a slow individual, and never optimally for each individual. Even in the case of one-on-one teaching, the knowledge to be taught may be at too advanced a level or be communicated at too great a speed, which may lead to distorted or erroneous understanding.
This problem can be solved to a large extent if the material to be taught is carefully prepared by specialists and presented step by step, each step representing a small logical extension of the pupil's previous knowledge. For this process to be effective, the student must have continuous control of his understanding as the material is taught, and he must be able to work at his individual maximum speed.
One of the aims of the present invention is therefore to provide an educational device which allows the step-by-step presentation of the material to be taught and the simultaneous control of its comprehension. This device is designed in such a way as to allow rapid teaching and to let each student learn at his own speed for each problem presented.
The device may include a series of cards and a card holder in which each mobile card can slide back and forth, for example, that card bearing multiple issues with a choice of answers. The card holder can be arranged to expose a given problem and to hide other problems which may present with increasing difficulty or require knowledge of the answer to previous problems.
Preferably the device has means for bringing a new problem to sight, these means being actuated by the choice of a correct response to a previous problem.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the device which is the subject of the invention.
Fig. 1 is a plan view.
Fig. 2 is a section on 2-2 of FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section on 3-3 of FIG. 1. FIG. 4 is a partial view from below.
Fig. 5 is a detail view.
Fig. 6 is a view of a member that comprises said embodiment. The device shown comprises a card holder 10, problem cards, one of which is indicated at 11, and a needle 12. In its left column, the card 11 carries several problems, the first of which is the sum 0 -f - 0. Possible answers to each of the problems in the first column are spaced crosswise across the map. For example, the possible answers for the sum 0 -I- 0 are 1, 0.4, and 3.
The card holder comprises a plate 13 having upright longitudinal edges 14 constituting guides for the card 11. It can be seen that the card 11 has a transverse dimension substantially equal to the distance between the two edges 14. Thus, when the card moves in the card holder, it remains parallel to itself.
A transverse part 15 is arranged in the central region of the card holder and mounted on the plate 13 at a distance from the flat central part of the latter, so as to allow the passage of the card 11 between this plate 13 and this part 15. The latter has a longitudinal part 16 which is folded back away from the plate 13 and constitutes a guide facilitating the insertion of a card below the transverse piece.
The transverse part 15 is fixed to the plate 13 by end parts 20 which rest in a cutout 21 cut in the edges 14 and which are folded around the plate 13. The part 15 has several slots 22 disposed obliquely with respect to the direction. movement of the card 11 in the card holder. Exhibit 15 includes a rectilinear top edge 25 which indicates, by underlining, a particular problem on the card which is exposed just above said edge.
The transverse part 15 hides the problems arranged below and which follow the problem indicated.
Each of the slots 22 is disposed in the part 15 near the edge 25 and just below a particular response to the problem exposed. Card 11 has several transversely extending slots 26, some shorter than others. Each of the transverse slots 26 corresponds to one of the specific responses to the problem carried by the card. For example, slit 26A is longer than slits 26B and corresponds to the correct answer to problem 0 + 0, while slits 26B correspond to incorrect answers 1, 4 and 3.
To use the device, the pupil places the needle 12 in the leftmost lower end, looking at fig. 1 of slot 22 placed below what it thinks is the correct solution to the problem shown in the left column of the card. The slots 26 are so arranged in the card that when the problem to which each slot corresponds is presented above the part 15, the left ends of these slots 26 are aligned with the left ends of the slots 22 in the crosspiece. .
Thus, when the pupil introduces the needle into the left end of one of the slots 22, the needle is also inserted into the corresponding end of one of the slots 26.
It should be noted that all of the slots 22 and the aligned slots 26 appear identical and that there is nothing to tell the student which slot is the longest and which answer is correct. The student then moves the needle as far up and to the right as slot 22 into which the needle is inserted allows. If he chose, for example, slot 22 arranged below the correct answer 0.>, The needle will move to the upper right end of slot 22 and the next problem writes below problem 0. + 0 will appear.
This occurs because the lower edge of the slot 22 constitutes a cam surface for the needle and this needle also rests against the upper edge of the slot 26A, so that when the needle has finished its movement from one end of the slot 22 to the other, the slot 26A has its right end aligned with the upper right end of the slot 22. It is seen that each of the slots 26 which corresponds to the correct answer presents a length equal to the lateral projection of each slot 22.
It can also be seen that each of the windows 22 has a length and an angle sufficient for the card to move under the action of the movement of the needle from one end to the other of the correct slot 22, from one end to the other. sufficient distance to expose the following problem to view. Further, when the card is thus moved, the various slots and the various problems are arranged so that the left ends of the slots 26 corresponding to the possible responses for the new problem are aligned with the left ends of the slots 22.
Suppose now that the student chooses a false answer to the problem posed, for example that he indicates 1, 4 or 3 for the sum 0 + 0. He places the needle 12 in the lower left end of the slot 22 corresponding to the incorrect answer chosen and tries to move the needle through the slit to its upper right end. When the needle is introduced into the slot 22, it is also introduced into the aligned slot 26B. Since the slots 26B are much shorter than the slot 26A, as has been said, the card does not move upwards by any appreciable amount and the student then knows that he has chosen an incorrect answer by the so that a new problem is not exposed.
It can be seen that the other slots 26 are arranged in the same way as the slots 26A and 26B. For example, slit 26C is longer than windows 26D because it corresponds to the correct answer 2b to problem 1 = 1, while slits 26D correspond to incorrect answers 1, 3 and 4.
It can also be seen that the length of the slot 26C corresponds to the lateral projection of the slots 22 and that the length of the slots 26D is sufficiently short to prevent the card from moving upward an appreciable amount when it is stressed by the card. needle 12.
Obviously, the device described is not limited to numbers or mathematical problems. The following examples show some possibilities of the device.
A row of a card for a first degree student may look like this

It will also be understood that this device speeds up teaching by allowing each pupil to be educated at his own speed for each problem presented. These objects are fulfilled, at least in part, by the use in the disclosed device of means for bringing a new problem into view if a correct answer has been given to the previous problem.
It is obvious that the device could be circular, for example. The slots 22 could extend laterally to the card holder and the slots 26 form an angle with the direction of travel of the card.
