EMI0002.0027

Process for finishing textile fibers It is known to use acrylic resins for the production of coatings and impregnations on fibrous and film-shaped materials. They are particularly important as binders in the production of colorings and prints with pigments. In this field of application, high demands are usually placed on the fastness properties of the dyeings and prints; the dyeings should have good rub, wash and light fastness properties. It was found that in many cases the wash fastness after exposure of the dyeing is significantly reduced compared to the unexposed dyeing.
In the following, this wash fastness of the exposed dyeings is referred to as light wash fastness.
It has now been found that impregnations and coatings with improved light washing fastness are obtained if an aqueous preparation is applied to textile fibers which contains the following components:
a) A dispersion of a copolymer of 28 to 50% vinylidene chloride, 4 to 10% of an acid of the formula
EMI0001.0020
in which R1 is hydrogen or a low molecular weight alkyl radical and at least 35% of an ester of the formula
EMI0001.0024
wherein R1 has the meaning given above and -0R, the residue of an alcohol with 3 to 7 carbon atoms,
and b) at least one aminoplast, and if, after drying, it is cured at a higher temperature.
The aminoplasts mentioned under b) can ent either derivatives of a formaldehyde condensation product which are insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents, an amino compound which can be hardened with formaldehyde, or water-soluble formaldehyde condensation products of an amino compound which can be hardened with formaldehyde, or water-soluble derivatives thereof be.
They can be used in the following combinations with a): a) and water-insoluble aminoplast, a) and water-soluble aminoplast, a) and water-insoluble and water-soluble aminoplast.
In the two formulas given above for component a), R1 is above all hydrogen or an alkyl radical having preferably 1 to 4 carbon atoms, such as the ethyl and especially the methyl radical. -0R2 stands for the remainder of an alcohol of the formula HORz. This alcohol can be aliphatic or cyclic. It can belong to the heterocyclic series or the alicyclic series.
Examples include tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol, cyclohexanol, methoxy- or methyl-substituted cyclohexanols, such as o-methylcyclohexanol and p-methoxyclohexanol. -0R2 but preferably represents the radical of a saturated aliphatic alcohol with 3 to 7 carbon atoms,
whose alkyl group can be straight or branched and optionally interrupted by ether oxygen atom. Propyl, isopropyl, n-butyl, isobutyl, tert. Butyl, amyl, 2-ethylbutyl, n-hexyl or heptyl alcohol, also methoxyethanol, ethoxyethanol,
Butoxyethanol. The esters of these alcohols HOR2 are derived from α-alkyl acrylic acids, such as methacrylic acid, and preferably from acrylic acid. Of course, instead of a single ester of the specified composition, several of them can also be used with various alcohol and / or acid residues.
The esters of the formula thus prove to be particularly advantageous
EMI0002.0027
wherein R1 is hydrogen or a methyl group and R2 is an alkyl radical having 3 to 7 carbon atoms, ie z. B. the acrylic acid n-butyl ester or isobutyl ester.
It is generally of advantage if the copolymer contains largely or exclusively the above-mentioned components. Valuable products can, however, also contain other monomers. with only one ethylene double bond.
Acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, styrene, vinyl chloride, chlorotrifluoroethane, 1,1-difluoroethane, acrylamide or methacrylamide and their nitrogen-substituted derivatives with 1 to 8 carbon atoms, such as N-diethylacrylamide, N-propyl acrylamide, may be mentioned as such ,
N-di-n-butyl acrylamide or N-tert-butyl acrylamide, furthermore vinyl alkyl ethers with about 2 to 10 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, such as vinyl ethyl, vinyl butyl,
Vinyl-2-ethylbutyl or vinyl-2-ethylhexyl ether or finally vinyl esters of aliphatic carboxylic acids with 2 to 4 carbon atoms, such as vinyl acetate. If components are used that result in hard polymers, such as.
B. acrylonitrile, the proportion of vinylidene chloride is expediently kept at the lower limit mentioned above. The copolymers can be prepared according to the method of patent No. 351108.
The derivatives of formaldehyde condensation products of an amino compound yielding resins which can be hardened with formaldehyde, which are insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents and which can be used for the present process, are, like component a), also used in dispersion form.
These derivatives can be derived on the one hand from formaldehyde condensation products of urea, thiourea, guanidine, acetylenediurea, dicyandiamide, urone, and also from aminotriazines, such as melamine, or from guanamines, such as acetoguanamine, benzoguanamine or formoguanamine,
and on the other hand from alcohols with at least 3 carbon atoms, such as propyl, allyl, butyl, amyl, hexyl alcohol, cyclohexanol, benzyl alcohol, lauryl alcohol, oleyl alcohol or abietyl alcohol. In addition to the ether residues, the condensation products can also contain residues of higher molecular weight acids, such as. B. contain stearic acid.
If such higher molecular acid residues are present, the compounds can also be derived from methylol ethers with low molecular weight alcohols having 1 to 2 carbon atoms.
The production of such condensation products is known. The aqueous dispersions can also be prepared in a manner known per se using emulsifiers and protective colloids, such as casein or gelatin. Ethylene oxide condensation products of higher molecular weight alcohols, acids or amines, eg.
B. of oleyl alcohol, stearic alcohol or hydroabietyl alcohol. In the preparation of the dispersions it can be advantageous to remove any solvents still present from the preparation of the condensation products.
The water-soluble formaldehyde condensation products which can be used for the present process are derived from the above-mentioned water-insoluble amino compounds. Instead of the free methylol compounds, their water-soluble ethers with low molecular weight alcohols such as methanol or ethanol can also be used.
In the preparations that can be used according to the invention, the components a) and b) can also have several of the specified types instead of a single compound. The proportions between the individual components can vary within fairly wide limits.
In the production of the preparations which can be used according to the invention from 2 or 3 components and which are to be stored, acid groups present in component a) must be neutralized. If the preparation is used immediately, this is not necessary.
When used, curing catalysts, such as acids or compounds which split off acids when heated, eg. B. ammonium salts of strong acids added to the preparations. The curing can take place under the usual conditions, e.g. B. at 120 to 160 for 2 to 10 minutes. The preparations can be applied to the textile fibers in a manner known per se, e.g. B. by impregnation or printing.
The preparations which can be used according to the invention are suitable for the production of well-adhering, elastic coatings on fabrics of all kinds, such as. B. on cotton, jute, hemp, straw, polyester, rayon, silk, rayon, polyamide, polyacrylonitrile or glass fabrics. In particular, these dispersions can, if desired, be thickened with ammonia and then painted onto such fabrics by means of a knife coater. In this way, with the new prod ucts z.
B. produce waterproof raincoat fabrics, wax and oil cloth imitations, tent fabrics, oil silk fabrics and back finishes on Manchester fabrics or carpets. As a result of their good adhesion, these resin mixtures are also suitable as primers under polyvinyl chloride coatings, e.g. B. for the production of artificial leather.
However, the dispersions can also be used unthickened in the immersion process for the production of filling paper on all types of fabrics. In this way z. B. Inlet articles, fabrics with washable handle finishes, waterproof tent fabrics and interlining fabrics that are resistant to dry washing and do not become brittle. Another possible use for the preparations is as an adhesive for flock printing.
As already mentioned several times, the preparations are particularly suitable as binders for pigment dyeings and prints on all types of textile materials.
Instead of applying pigment-containing preparations to the textile fibers, materials colored with pigments can also be aftertreated with the binder preparations.
In the process according to the invention, fabrics made from native or regenerated cellulose, such as cotton, linen, rayon or rayon, and also cellulose esters such as acetate silk, wool, silk or synthetic fiber materials such as polyamide, polyester or polyacrylonitrile fibers, or glass fibers can be treated will. Textile materials that keep these fibers mixed are just as suitable.
From Belgian patent specification no. 550356 a method for refining fiber material with aqueous preparations and subsequent heat treatment is known. These preparations contain at least three components, namely 1. a latex of a polymerisation plastic, 2. a dispersion of a water-insoluble aminoplast precondensate, 3. a water-soluble aminoplast precondensate. Practically all flexible and elastic polymerisation plastics can be used as latex.
So who also enumerated the polymer components that can lead to the monomer mixtures used in the present process. However, these are neither mentioned nor suggested in their present form. In particular, however, the special properties of the copolymers used here, such as. B. the increased light wash fastness or the stable Ver thickening achievable with ammonia, the Belgian. Patent specification not be taken. .
American patent specification No. 2278415 describes copolymers of 10 to 90% vinylidene chloride,
5 to 50% monomers giving hard homopolymers and 5 to 300/0 monomers giving soft homopolymers. The properties of these copolymers are satisfactory hardness, breaking strength, durability and pourability.
The esters to be used as starting monomers in the present invention yield soft homopolymers, so that the copolymers differ significantly from those in the American patent due to the quantitative difference in the starting materials.
American patent specification No. 2819984 describes copolymers of 40 to 70% vinylidene chloride, 30 to 60% alkyl acrylate and 0.5 to 3%. Acrylic acid,
Methacrylic acid or itaconic acid. Here, too, the copolymers used according to the invention differ significantly from those of the American patent by their acid content. The German patents nos. 906568 and 908009 each describe a copolymer consisting of 50 parts of vinylidene chloride, 45 parts of butyl acrylate and 5 parts of acrylic acid amide or
40 parts of vinyl chloride, 56 parts of butyl acrylate and 4 parts of acrylic acid. Compared to these two copolymers, those used according to the invention differ in their different compositions.
In the following examples, unless otherwise noted, parts are parts by weight, percentages are percentages by weight, and temperatures are given in degrees Celsius.
Example 1 16 parts of Turkish red oil, 3.4 parts of triethanolamine and 9.1 parts of water are mixed with 58.3 parts of hexamethylolmelamine butyl ether (97% strength) in an effective emulsifier to form a syrupy one finely dispersed emulsion, whereupon a thin stream of 141,
5 parts of the acrylic resin emulsion described below are emulsified.
A syrupy emulsion with a high degree of dispersion is obtained, which has a dry content of 58% and a pure resin content of 49.5 / o.

Mercerized bleached cotton poplin is impregnated with one of these dye liquors on a padder at room temperature, squeezed off to a liquid absorption of about 60%,
dried at 70 to 90 and finally cured at 160 for 5 minutes.
The dyeings produced in this way have very good fastness to scrubbing, washing and rubbing. In addition, the dyeings have good wash fastness if, after 100 hours of exposure in the fadeometer, they are then subjected to a boiling wash with soap and soda. The wash fastness is just as good as that of the unexposed comparison dyeing.
The acrylic resin dispersion used in this example can be prepared as follows: A solution of 3.6 parts of sodium a-oxyoctadecane sulfonic acid in 150 parts of water is mixed with 72 parts of isobutyl acrylate, 42 parts of vinylidene chloride and 6 parts of acrylic acid. Another 0.4 part of triethanolamine and 0.2 part of isooctanol are added, the whole is mixed thoroughly and half of this emulsion is poured into a stirred vessel with a volume of 500 parts by volume.
This is provided with an ice-water-cooled reflux condenser and a thermometer. The. The entire apparatus is thoroughly flushed with nitrogen before filling the emulsion.
The initial emulsion is heated to an internal temperature of 60 ° and a solution of 0.06 part of potassium persulfate in 6 parts of water is then added. After about 15 minutes there is a slight increase in temperature, whereupon the remaining amount of the emulsion described above is added dropwise over the course of 1 hour, to which a solution of 0.06 part of potassium persulfate in 6 parts of water is previously added.
15 minutes after the end of the dropwise addition, the temperature has risen to about 66, and a solution of 0.06 part of potassium persulfate in 6 parts of water is again added, whereupon the temperature rises again to about 71. The same amount of catalyst is then added twice at intervals of 2 hours (i.e. 0.06 part of potassium persulfate in 6 parts of water), after the last addition the internal temperature is increased by 10 and after a further 2 hours the mixture is cooled to room temperature.

Mercerized, bleached cotton poplin is impregnated with one of these dye liquors at room temperature on a padder, squeezed to a liquid absorption of about 60%, dried at 70 to 90 and finally cured at 160 for 5 minutes.
The dyeings produced in this way have good wash fastness if they are subjected to a boiling wash with soap and soda after 100 hours of exposure to the thread meter. The wash fastness is just as good as that of the unexposed comparative dyeings.
Example 11 The procedure is as described in Example 1 or 6, but instead of the hexamethylolmelamine butyl ether, an equivalent amount of a) a hexamethylolmelamine allyl ether, b) a hexamethylol melamine allyl ether esterified with soy fatty acid, c) a hexamethylol melamine allyl ether is used n-propyl ether, d) a hexamethylol melamine n-propyl ether esterified with soy fatty acid, e) a hexamethylol melamine isopropyl ether,
fl of a hexamethylolmelamine methyl ether esterified with 2 moles of stearic acid, g) a mixture of equal parts of the products mentioned under b) and c).
Example 12 680 parts of the copolymer emulsion described at the end of Example 1 are neutralized with triethanolamine and, with 340 parts of a 50% strength aqueous emulsion, one with a condensation product of 1 mol of hydroabietin alcohol and approx 200 moles of ethylene oxide emulsified <RTI

Melamine-formaldehyde condensation product, which has only limited solubility in petrol hydrocarbons, is dissolved in a solution of 5.1 parts of an emulsifier free from inside, which is obtained by adding 200 mol of ethylene oxide to 1 mol of hydroabietyl alcohol and then treating with 1% hexamethylene-1
6-diisocyanate was obtained, emulsified in 18.9 parts of water and then finely homogenized. A stable, finely dispersed, oily emulsion containing 600/0 resin solution as the inner phase is obtained.
This emulsion is mixed with a solution of further 105 parts of the above-mentioned internal-free emulsifier in 183 parts of water and 27 parts of triethanolamine and then slowly mixed with stirring in 600 parts of a 50% strength aqueous dispersion of a copolymer of 601 / e butyl acrylate ,
350 / a vinylidene chloride and 5'0 / 0 acrylic acid. Ultimately, 1000 parts of a viscous binder are obtained, which can be processed into a stable printing medium suitable for pigment printing by diluting with water and emulsifying petroleum hydrocarbons.
For example, 200 parts of the above binder are diluted with 160 parts of water and an ointment-like pressure medium is obtained by emulsifying in 440 parts of petroleum (boiling limits 200 to 240).
By adding 150 parts of a paste containing 24% chlorinated copper phthalocyanine, 22.5.1 / o of the above-mentioned melamine-formaldehyde condensation product etherified with m-butanol, 3% xylene,
16% of an inside-free emulsifier from 1 mol - hydroabietyl alcohol and 15 mol ethylene oxide and 34.5% water,
20 parts of a 50% ammonium nitrate solution and 30 parts of water give 1000 parts of a rapid printing paste which, when applied to tissue made of cellulose or synthetic fibers, produces bright green prints using stencils or engraved rollers. After drying at normal or slightly elevated temperature and a subsequent brief heat treatment at 130 to 150, excellent rubbing and washable effects are obtained.
