<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
nismus antreibt.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Optical sign detector with movable leaflets arranged on the circumference of a drum that is moved step by step. Sign detectors with leaflets mounted on a drum are known which carry numbers, letters or words and which are turned over by rotating the drum like the leaves of a book. The drum is preferably driven by a stepping mechanism or a stepping motor. A large number of leaflets and thus a large number of steps causes a long set-up time for such a character indicator, especially if a common control device is used which is available to different character indicators for the purpose of readjustment.
In this case, since the position of the drum to be readjusted is not known to the control device, the drum must first be reset to a synchronization setting. So that this can be done safely from any position of the drum, a number of pulses corresponding to a full revolution must be given to the drive mechanism. In the worst case, the readjustment again requires a number of pulses corresponding to a full revolution, which results in the aforementioned long duration for each new setting. This duration can neither be significantly reduced by increasing the walking speed, which has certain limits, nor by reducing the number of indicator sheets.
The present invention enables the number of steps required to adjust the drum to be reduced. It relates to an optical sign detector with movable, sign-bearing leaves. These leaflets belong to two different groups and are arranged alternately on the circumference of the drum according to their group membership. The leaves of this indicator are turned over by the rotation of the drum and thereby successively brought into a first and a second display position.
The sign detector is characterized by a drive system in which the number of movement steps allotted to a full drum revolution is half as large as that of the leaflets. Another characteristic of the invention consists in an electromagnetically actuated means with two positions, which influences the folding processes of the leaflets in such a way that the group membership of the leaflet in the first display position at the end of a movement step depends on the position of the said medium.
An embodiment of the invention is described below.
FIG. 1 shows the front view and FIG. 2 shows the floor plan of a switching mechanism for displaying characters by means of reversible leaves. Fig. 3 shows schematically a first example for influencing the process of folding the leaflets, in which all leaflets are the same among themselves. 4-6 show a basic representation of further examples for influencing the folding process of the leaflets, in which the leaflets have certain characteristics in the form of incisions. The switching mechanism shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 is constructed between two circuit boards 20.
It is driven by a stepper motor, which consists of yokes 2 with an excitation coil 1 and an armature 3. The armature itself consists of a non-magnetic insulating material and contains the permanent magnet 4 in its interior. A part of the armature that is not visible in the figures is designed as a gearwheel, which enables the display mechanism explained later.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
nism drives. If alternately polarized voltage pulses are applied to the coil 1, the polarity of the yokes changes, so that the armature 3 only takes one step with each pulse, ie. H. turned counterclockwise by half a turn. The mentioned gearwheel of the armature engages in the gearwheel 5, which is rigidly coupled to the gearwheel 6.
The gear wheel 6 in turn engages in the gear wheel 7 of the same diameter, which is rigidly connected to the axle 21 in the same way as the two disks 8. Between these two disks are arranged indicator sheets 9, which are movably mounted with lateral pins in holes of said disks. These holes are arranged in a regular pitch on a circle concentric to the axis 21. The drum formed from the disks 8 and the leaflets 9 rotates counterclockwise, each of the leaflets rising on the rear side of the drum and then moving forward until it comes to rest against the stop 10. This position of the leaflet is called the first display position in the following.
As the drum continues to rotate, it slides under the stop 10, falls into the second display position according to the dashed semicircle 22 and is then covered again by the leaves that fall later. The leaflets are inscribed on both sides, which is not visible on the figures, on one side with the upper part and on the other side with the lower part of a character, so that the two leaves in the two display positions come together display a character. The displayed character is not visible on the figures.
The gear ratios of the gears are now chosen so that each half turn, i.e. H. one step of the armature corresponds to a movement of the drum by two pitches. As a result, the number of steps the drum moves per revolution is only half as great as the number of leaflets. It also follows from this that, with unchanged conditions of the stop 10, two leaflets are turned over with every half turn of the armature. The leaflets are divided into two groups and are distributed around the circumference of the drum in terms of order in such a way that the group membership of the leaflets changes continuously, so that of the two leaflets folded over with each step of the anchor, one belongs to the first group and one to the second group.
Each leaf that is to be brought into the first display position is thus determined on the one hand by the position of the drum and on the other hand by its group membership. In addition to the drive of the drum, there is therefore an electromagnetically actuated means with two positions, which brings the one of the two leaflets determined by the drum position into the first display position. Figs. 3-6 show some examples of how this group selection can be made. In the simplest example according to FIG. 3, all the leaflets are shaped identically.
The group selection is made by adjusting the stop 10 in height by an amount corresponding to the distance between the edges of the leaflets, i. H. by the amount of the division of the disks 8 made. The two positions of the stop are denoted by S1 and S2 in FIG. 3. The leaves belong to groups u (odd) and g (even). In the position S1 of the stop, a leaf from group u is in the first display position. If the stop were in position S2, the leaf drawn first would fall down, whereupon a leaf of group g would be in the first display position.
These relationships regarding the group membership of the leaflet in the first display position are the same for all positions of the drum. Instead of one stop that can be moved in the vertical direction, two stops can be arranged in the two possible heights, the lower one being primarily effective. If this is swiveled out of its effective area in any way, the higher-lying stop becomes effective. An example of such an arrangement for pivoting is described later together with other exemplary embodiments.
The disadvantage of the arrangement according to FIG. 3 is the relatively high demands on the precision of the mass of the leaflets, their mounting, the movement of the stop and the mounting of the drum. This is especially true in the presence of a large number of leaflets.
FIGS. 4 to 6 schematically indicate other options for selecting the group membership of the leaf which is in the first display position after the drum movement has ended, some of which do not have the disadvantages associated with the arrangement according to FIG. In these examples, leaflets are used everywhere, the bands of which differ in a characteristic shape, namely two forms of edges are used, one of which is assigned to the two groups of leaflets. The distinguishing features between the two types of edges consist in different types of incisions.
Each of the three Figs. 4-6 consists of three sub-figures a, b and c, with a and b representing schematically drawn sections through the leaflets. Sub-figure c shows, as an example of the shape of each of the leaflets belonging to each group, excerpts from the upper edge of the two leaflets 1 and 4. In sub-figures c, the cutting lines for cuts a and b are also drawn. In the sub-figures a and b, six leaflets numbered from 1 to 6 are drawn in a stepped arrangement. This arrangement corresponds to the development of the drum on a tangent, i. H. the arrangement in which the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Move the leaflet past the stop or the stops.
All leaves are drawn in the untrimmed size, with the part that is not in black being cut away. To better illustrate the interaction between the leaflet and the stop, the stop is shown three times, and the distance between each two of these representations corresponds to that distance of the movement of the leaflet under the stop, which is caused by a step of the anchor. From FIG. 4a, for example, the relationships can be seen which result when the stop 10 is located on the cutting line a in FIG. 4c.
In that position of the leaflet which corresponds to the position of this abutment drawn at the bottom with regard to the position of the stop, it is easy to see that the leaflet 1 falls while the rest of the leaflets are held back by the abutment. The leaflet 2 is then in the first and the leaflet 1 in the second display position. During the subsequent rotation of the drum by one step, the position of the leaflets corresponds to the position of the stop 10 drawn in the middle. As a result, the two leaflets 2 and 3 also fall down, so that the leaflet 4 is in the first and the leaflet 3 is in the second display position.
If, however, the stop 10 is located instead of the section line a on the section line b in FIG. 4c, an image according to FIG. 4b results. There, the leaf 1 is held in the lowest position of the stop 10, the leaf 3 in the middle and the leaf 5 in the upper position in the first display position.
If the odd-numbered leaflets are referred to as the first group and the even-numbered leaflets as the second group, one leaflet from the second group is in the position of the stop 10 according to FIG. 4a and one leaflet from the first group according to FIG. 4b is in the first display position. The group to which the leaflet in the first display position should belong is therefore determined by the position of the stop 10 on the cutting line a or b. The group mentioned can therefore be selected by moving this stop parallel to the drum axis.
An embodiment of an electromagnetically actuated means with two positions, which causes a displacement of the stop, is shown in FIGS. 1 and 2. This device has an electromagnet with the yoke 15, the coil 16 and the armature 14. The front part of the armature presses on a lever 12 which is rotatably mounted in the bearing 13. This lever is also guided through the rods 11 and, together with the armature 14, is pulled into the rest position by the helical spring 17. If the coil 16 is excited and the armature 14 is therefore attracted, the lever 12 rotates clockwise about the axis 13, whereby the stop 10 moves against the edge of the drum.
As an advantage of the arrangement according to FIG. 4 compared to the arrangement according to FIG. 3, the larger tolerances with regard to the dimensions of the leaflets and the position of the stop 10 are to be emphasized. As can be seen from FIGS. 4a and 4b, the stop 10 can be pushed up and down in height by almost a whole step without the correct function being compromised. The only disadvantage of this arrangement is the fact that the cutouts on the upper edge of the leaflets according to FIG. 4c are relatively large and therefore cut off the area available for the character to be displayed.
6 shows another example with group selection by moving the stop parallel to the drum axis. There the clipping of the drawing area is reduced to a minimum; on the other hand, the dimensional tolerances - as can be found when studying FIGS. 6a and 6b - must again be as tight as in the arrangement according to FIG. 3. The difference compared to the variant of FIG. 3, not shown, with one fixed and one movable stop lies solely in the fact that no fixed stop is necessary in the arrangement according to FIG. 6.
In the example shown in FIG. 5, a fixed stop is again used. This is the stop on FIG. 5b, which is higher than that on FIG. 5a. The stop in FIG. 5a is then brought into effect either on line a in FIG. 5c or even swiveled out of the area of the leaflets in order to influence the folding process, so that it is ineffective. This example has the advantages of the large permitted tolerances such as the example in FIG. 4.
In addition, however, as FIG. 5c shows, the sections of the leaflets are not as large as those in FIG. 4c, which shows that the example according to FIG. 5 combines the advantages of the other examples.
The devices already described and shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 for moving the stop and thus for selecting the group membership of the leaflets to be brought into the signal positions can also be used to synchronize the drum position with a transmitter device, not shown. For this purpose, the lever 12 carries a cam 19 and the gearwheel 5 a bolt 18. The ratio between the gearwheel 5 and the reed drum is 1: 1, so that the bolt is always in the same position for a certain drum position.
If the coil 16 is now energized and the armature 14 is attracted and the lever 12 assumes the working position (not shown), the cam 19 protrudes into the path of the bolt 18 so that the drum and drive cannot move further when this is in Clockwise rotating gear 5 has reached the position in which the bolt 18
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
abuts on cam 19. The drum can only be rotated again when the excitation of the magnet 16 is switched off and the lever 12 and armature 14 have returned to the rest position shown under the action of the spring 17.
When any character is displayed, starting from any position of the drum, the coil 16 is first excited so that the lever 12 moves into the working position. A first series with a number of alternately polarized pulses corresponding to one full revolution of the drum is then applied to the spool 1, the gears and the drum being rotated until the pin 18 hits the cam 19. The drum is then in a defined position, the synchronization position. The other pulses given to coil 1 have no effect. After this first series of pulses has ended, the current in the coil 16 is switched off, whereupon the bolt 18 is released.
A second series of alternately polarized pulses is then applied to the spool 1, the number of pulses of this second series corresponding to the position which the paper carrying the character to be displayed occupies within the drum in relation to the synchronizing position. Depending on the group to which the leaflet to be brought into the first display position belongs, the magnet 15 is again excited or left in the idle state after the drum has left the synchronizing position again.
In this way it is possible to carry out the selection of the leaflets and the synchronization to a large extent with common means and thus to save effort.
It goes without saying that the application of the invention is not restricted to the exemplary embodiments given. So it is e.g. B. easily possible to use bulges instead of incisions to characterize the leaflets. In addition, there are many other possibilities which are within the range of the person skilled in the art.
