Two-position push-button and method of manufacturing this push-button The subject of the present patent is a two-position push-button, comprising a sleeve, a spring-loaded pushbutton sliding axially in this sleeve and a ball trapped between these two organs. nes by two grooves, which are made in adjacent faces of these two members, which intersect in all operating positions of the pusher and which have a depth approximately equal to the radius of the ball,
one of these grooves being constituted by an annular groove and the other having two stop positions offset axially with respect to each other and in which the ball passes alternately with each axial pressure exerted on the pusher , against its return spring, the latter maintaining the ball in said stop positions, when the pusher is left at rest.
Such push buttons are used in particular to control the retractable cartridges of ballpoint pens.
The push-button or the sleeve of some of these push-buttons carries an independent part, which is put in place after the ball has been fitted, to trap the latter between the two components of the push-button and thus ensure a permanent connection between them. , while allowing axial movements of the pusher. In these push-buttons, the groove with two stop positions is delimited by the scalloped edges, located opposite one another, of two rings generally made of synthetic material and both mounted on the push-button. To assemble these push-buttons, we first mount one of the rings on the pusher, which is then inserted into the sleeve, then the ball is placed in the groove of the sleeve and the second ring is driven out. on the pusher.
During this last operation, however, care must be taken that the second ring is oriented with precision in relation to the first, so that its scalloped edge delimits, with that of the first ring, a groove whose shape ensures proper operation. wanted from the push button.
The assembly of these push-buttons is however relatively complicated; it -requires either great attention and a lot of dexterity on the part of the personnel who carry it out or else the use of expensive and bulky machines.
Push-buttons are also known in which the groove with two stop positions is milled entirely in the lateral face of the push-button. In these push-buttons, the groove in question extends to one of the ends of the push-button. To assemble the push-button, you must first place the ball in the groove of the sleeve, holding the latter horizontally, then bring the push-button in place, taking care that the entry of its groove engages exactly. on the ball. Then, a stud having a central tenon is fixed at the end of the pusher, so as to close the entrance to the groove.
For this, the tenon of this stud is driven out in an axial housing provided at the end of the pusher.
These push buttons also have several drawbacks. Their assembly, too delicate to be carried out on a machine, must therefore be done by hand, which hardly allows large productions. Furthermore, the hunting operation does not offer all the desirable security. It happens that the studs come loose in service. In addition, these pushbuttons also include three parts: the sleeve, the pushbutton and the stud, which must be machined and handled separately. Compared to pushers made in one piece, a push button with attached stud finally has the drawback of causing a loss of material, due to the stud of the stud engaged in a hole of the push button.
Finally, push-buttons are known in which both the sleeve and the push-button are each made in a single piece, which can be metal. The assembly of these push-buttons, and in particular the installation of the ball, is provided by an introduction passage, which communicates with the groove with two stop positions. This passage opens out at one of the ends of the member which carries the groove with two stop positions; it also has a constriction shaped so as to only let the ball pass in one direction. For this, this constriction has a gentle ramp on the side of the entrance to the introduction passage and a steep ramp or even a face perpendicular to the step wise on the side of said groove.
These latter pushbuttons have a serious drawback in practice, however. It is not possible to machine the groove, the groove, the passage and especially the throttle to dimensions offering satisfactory operating safety. If the throttle is not strong enough, the ball quickly passes it in the wrong direction. It then leaves the introduction passage, which has the effect of dissociating the pusher from the sleeve and causing the push-button to be discarded. In strengthening the strangulation, we come up against two other difficulties. Either the ball does not manage to pass it at the time of assembly, or else it passes it by widening it or by being damaged.
However, a deformed constriction during assembly seriously endangers the service life of the push-button. As for a damaged ball, it immediately compromises the operation of the push-button.
The object of the present patent is to overcome all the mentioned drawbacks, by creating a push-button of safe and durable operation and of simple and inexpensive manufacture.
The push-button according to the present patent is characterized in that one of the two members (sleeve, push-button) of the push-button has a projection resulting from a deformation of a part of this member, in that the another member has a shoulder, which acts as an axial stop for this projection and thus limits the axial travel of the pusher in one direction, and in that the annular zone of the member carrying the groove has two stop positions, which is located opposite the annular groove of the other member in this extreme axial position of the pusher, extends between the groove with two stop positions and a housing,
which is connected to this groove and which has a depth at least equal to the diameter of the ball.
The present patent also includes a process, characterized in that the ball is placed in the mounting housing and in that the push is engaged in the sleeve, so as to bring the annular groove and the mounting housing. facing each other, in that the ball is dropped from the mounting housing into the annular groove, in that the pusher is moved to bring the groove to two opposite stop positions of the annular groove, and in that the projection is formed by deformation of part of the sleeve or of the pusher.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the push-button according to claim I and illustrates an example of implementation of the method according to claim II.
Fig. 1 is an axial sectional view of the upper part of a ballpoint pen provided with said push-button, the fi. 2 a partial developed view of the pusher, FIG. 3 and fig. 4 are partial sectional views illustrating two successive steps of the exemplary implementation of the method.
The ballpoint pen shown in FIG. 1 com takes a tubular body 1, of plastic material, in which is housed a retractable cartridge 2. The latter is biased by a coil spring (not shown) which surrounds it and which pushes it upwards while leaning, on the one hand, on a shoulder of the cartridge, and, on the other hand, on an internal flange (not shown) presented by the body 1. A sleeve 3 having a thread 4 and an upper glue 5 is screwed into the upper part of the body 1, the collar 5 resting against the end of the body 1. This sleeve has a cylindrical bore 6 which passes through it in its entire length.
An annular groove 7, of trapezoidal profile, is made in the internal face of the wall of the sleeve 3, in the vicinity of its lower end. The sleeve 3 also has a tubular extension 8, the two faces of which are machined cylindrical (FIG. 3). This part 8 has a smaller wall thickness than the rest of the sleeve 3, so that it can be easily deformed. Its inner diameter is a little larger than the diameter of bore 6; it thus gives rise to an internal projection 19 of the sleeve 3.
A cylindrical pusher 9 having a glue 10 at its lower end, is engaged in the sleeve 3 and can slide freely in the bore 6. In the lateral face of this pusher is hollowed out a groove 11, of constant depth, but of width. variable, the outline of which recalls that of the con tour of a heart (fig. 2). The point of the heart is downwards, while the scalloped part is at the top. The point of the core extends downwards, decreasing in width and ends in a mounting housing 12, deeper than the groove 11.
The push-button further comprises a locking member, which is constituted by a ball 13, the dimensions of which correspond to the profile of the groove 7, and to those of the groove 11. This ball is partially engaged in the groove 7 of the sleeve. 3 and partly in the groove 11 of the pusher 9. As can be seen in FIG. 1, the tubular part 8 of the sleeve is slightly folded inwards; it thus occupies its final position of service. The collar 10 forms a shoulder, which abuts axially against the lower edge of the deformed tubular part 8, under the action of the return spring of the pusher 9, when the latter is in its upper position.
In this first stop position, an annular zone 18 of the pusher 9 extending through the lower part of the groove 11, is located opposite the groove 7, so that the ball 13 cannot pass through the zone 18. , when the push-button is in service condition and consequently cannot roll in the housing 12. If the push-button 9 is pressed in the position of FIG. 1, the latter moves the cartridge 2 downwards against the action of its res out. The ball 13 traverses the left branch of the groove 11 (fig. 2) and thus reaches the top of the left lobe of the groove 11, after having slipped against an oblique ramp 14, which forms a portion of the upper edge of the groove 11 .
If we then release the pusher, the latter moves upwards under the action of the spring, which acts on the cartridge 2. The ball 13 slides against a ramp 15 which limits the upper part of the groove 11 downwards. and it reaches a hollow 16 at the bottom of which the force of the spring holds it. The pusher is then locked in a second stop position such that the tip of the cartridge 2 of the ballpoint pen is extracted from the body 1, which allows the use of the instrument. In order to bring the retractable cartridge back into the body 1, that is to say to bring it back to the position shown in FIG. 1, all you have to do is press button 9 again.
The ball 13 then slides from its second stop position against a ramp 17 of the upper edge of the groove 11 and arrives at the top of the right lobe of the upper part of the heart. When the pusher 9 is released, the latter is urged upwards and the ball slides in the right branch of the groove 11, thereby allowing the pusher 9 to move under the action of the spring. The axial movement of the pusher 9 only ends when the collar 10 abuts against the tubular extension 8. At this moment, the pusher is again in its first stop position shown in FIG. 1.
Each time the pusher 9 is pressed again, the ball 13, which is trapped between two grooves which intersect in all the operating positions of the pusher 9, runs immutably through the same portion of the path, always in the same direction.
In order for the device described to function correctly, it is clear that the depth of the groove 7 and that of the groove 11 must both be approximately equal to the radius of the ball 13, these parts being so adjusted to each other. so that the ball moves without play and without jamming.
As can be seen in particular in FIG. 3, the depth of the housing 12 is on the other hand greater than the diameter of the ball 13. This fact has the consequence of allowing extremely easy and rapid assembly of the push-button described. Indeed, the tubular extension 8 of the sleeve 3 has been machined with a cylindrical shape. Its internal diameter is adjusted to the external diameter of the glue rette 10 so that the latter can engage there freely.
To assemble the push-button described, the procedure is as follows: a ball is placed in the housing 12 while holding the push-button 9 horizontally and the housing 12 upwards. This operation can be carried out very quickly, by engaging the pusher under the lower orifice of a distributor, a hopper or a loader containing the balls and arranged so that a ball comes out and falls into the the housing 12, each time a pusher is introduced into said device. The pusher 9 carrying the ball 13 is then introduced into the sleeve 3 until the projection 19 abuts axially against the collar 10 (FIG. 3).
As the ball is fully embedded in the housing 12, the depth of which is greater than the diameter of the ball, the pusher 9 can be introduced freely into the bore 6. When the projection 19 abuts against the collar 10, the housing 12 and therefore the ball 13 are located opposite the groove 7. It is thus sufficient to rotate the pusher 9 by 180 around its axis, so that the ball 13 comes out of the housing 12 and falls into the groove 7. then partially extract the pusher 9 from the sleeve 3, so as to cause the collar 10 to come out of the tubular portion 8, as seen in FIG. 4.
The ball 13 then reaches the part of the groove 11 which forms the tip of the core. From this moment, the push-button can be held vertically, the collar 10 being directed upwards. It can be placed on a bracket to fold the tubular portion 8 with a punch against the body of the pusher 9 and move it from its initial mounting position (fig. 3 and 4) to its final operating position. , shown in fig. 1. At this moment, the device is locked, that is to say that the sleeve 3 and the pusher 9 are permanently linked to each other.
The pusher can only move inside the sleeve between two extreme positions which are determined, on the one hand, by the fact that the ball 13 abuts against the upper edge of the upper lobes of the groove 11, and , on the other hand, by the fact that the flange 10 of the pusher abuts against the lower edge of the tubular part 8 of the sleeve. In other words, as the housing 12 is on the side of the zone 18 opposite to the core, the ball 13 can never return there again.
The push-button described therefore combines the advantages of very great simplicity of manufacture, since it consists of only two machined parts: the sleeve and the push-button, and very rapid assembly. On the other hand, the groove 11, machined entirely in the same part, can be traced with all the desired precision. The push-button described is therefore of an extremely low cost, while operating absolutely safely. It is particularly suitable for use in ballpoint pens, where cost price and operational reliability are of decisive importance.
