Fig. 10 is a sectional view, taken along the line X-X of FIG. 9.
Fig. 11 is an elevational view of one of the branches of the compass shown in FIGS. 9 and 10.
Fig. 12 is a plan view of FIG. 11.
Fig. 13, on a smaller scale, is a schematic plan view of the third embodiment shown in FIG. 7, showing the marking of the center of a circumference comprising an arc of a circle passing through three points.
The embodiments described below take the form of a flat support, made of transparent material, for example synthetic organic material, said support being intended to be moved on a drawing sheet, with a view to connecting three points by an arc of a circle and locate the center of the circumference comprising said arc of a circle.
In -the first embodiment, shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, this support has the form of a disc 1, the center of the disc being pierced with a hole 2 intended for the passage of a locating member, for example a pinhead or a pricker. On the disc 1 are represented, for example by printing or engraving, circumferences 3 and marks 4.
The circumferences 3, concentric with the hole, central 2, are spaced from each other by a mfl, diameter and the marks 4, representing numbers, are arranged along the radii of said circumferences, each of the numbers indicating, for example in centimeters, the length of the corresponding radius.
In an alternative to the first embodiment, shown in section in FIG. 3, the periphery 5 and the central part 6 of the face 7 of the disc 1, in contact with the drawing sheet., Each have a projection intended to avoid the friction of the parts printed on the back of the disc.
The second embodiment shown in FIGS. 4 and 5, comprises a support 8, in the form of a disc, graduated in grades at its periphery 9, said periphery being bevelled to facilitate the measurement of the angles printed on the lower face 10, flat,
in contact with the drawing leaf. Two lines 11, 11 ', perpendicular to each other, are printed on the disc 8, said lines being tines to identify grades 0 and 200, on the one hand, 100 and 300, on the other hand .
The disc 8 further comprises, as said 1, circumferences 12, concentric with a hole 13 drilled in the center of the circle, said circumferences being spaced apart by one millimeter, and marks 14 intended to indicate in centimeters the length. radius of the radius corresponding to the respective circumference. Each of the sectors delimited by lines 11 and 11 'has holes 15, arranged along radii,
said trbus being staggered over said radii at a distance of two millimeters, measured from the center of one hole to the next, each of said holes being intended for the passage of the tip of a pencil. Each sector has two rows of holes drilled along a radius of the disk.
The holes 15 of a radial row are offset, on the same circumference, by a quarter. millimeter from one row to the next starting from row 16 of holes, corresponding to 375 grades, counterclockwise.
Next to each of the rows 16 of holes is printed a number, such as 0 - 0.25 - 0.50 - 0.75 - 1.00 - 1.25 - 1.50 and 1.75 respectively, said numbers indicating the offset of the row of holes with respect to the circumference to pass through this hole.
Thus, for example, on the madial row 16, the center of each of the holes 15 is placed on the circumference corresponding to this hole. In the next row 16 ',
the center of each of the holes is placed a quarter of a millimeter beyond the circumference on which it should lie. This arrangement is intended to make it possible to draw, with the greatest possible approximation, on the drawing sheet, an arc of a circle passing through three points, as described below.
It is obvious that each of the discs 1 and 8 of the first two embodiments could be replaced respectively by a semi-circle.
The third embodiment shown in FIGS. 7 and 8, comprises a support 17 having the shape of an arcuate plate, said plate being delimited by radial edges 18, the angle at the center of said edges being about 900.
The -support 17 is provided, in its central part, with an -appen dice 19, for example a bar, oriented along the radius forming the axis of symmetry of the plate, said bar being pierced at its free end with a hole 20 placed in the center of the radius corresponding to the arc of a circle 17,
said hole being intended for the passage of a pin or a pricker.
As in the previous embodiments, the support 17 is provided with impressions representing lines 21 in arcs of a circle, spaced from each other by one millimeter, and marks marked 20, 21 and 22 indicating the length in centimeters. respective radii of said arcs of. circle.
The plate also has holes 22, drilled in the support 17. For the passage of the tip of a pencil.
The fourth embodiment, shown in FIGS. 9 to 12, is composed of three branches: a central branch 23 and two side branches 24, 24 '.
The three branches, having the general shape of a proportion compass,: are capable of pivoting, at one of their ends, on a fixing member formed by two outer ferrules connected by a central tube, as shown in the fi-. 10. The central tube of the support 25 is intended for the passage of an axis 26 for operating the device.
Each of the three branches comprises, at one of its ends, a bent portion 27 (FIGS. 11 and 12) pierced with a hole 28 intended for the passage of the central tube of the support 25 for fixing the device.
Each of the branches is, moreover, provided with prints representing lines 29, in circular arcs, spaced from one another by one millimeter and having the axis 26 as a center, with marks 30 indicating the length in centimeters of the respective radii, and of the radial lines 31, the extension of which ends at the central hole 28.
Each of the branches is, moreover, provided with holes 32 intended for the passage of the tip of a pencil.
One of the three branches 23, 24 and 24 'could be used as the arm of a compass by providing it with a cursor provided with a line puller intended to trace on the drawing sheet the curve determined by the device.
To illustrate the operation of the devices described, FIG. 13 shows schematically, by way of example, the support 17 of the second embodiment, the line 21 of which in an arc of a circle connects the three points A, B and C, shown on the drawing sheet,
the position of said support making it possible to determine the center O of the arc of a circle by means of the central hole 20 (FIG. 7). In the case of the fourth embodiment (fig. 9) of the device, the same line 29 is made to coincide, in an arc of a circle, of two branches, for example the branches 24 and 24 ', with the points A and C respectively of fig. 13.
The third central branch 23, placed in the direction of point B, shows the direction in which the device must be moved so that points A, B and C lie on the same curved line 29 in all three branches. These three operations result in determining the center O allowing the curve to be drawn passing through points A, B and C.
When each of the points A and C is located on a separate line, the two lines being located in the same plane, and we want to connect these two lines by an arc of a circle passing through point B, we operate in the same way than that described above, taking care to place the radial lines 31 of two branches passing through points A and C,
perpendicular to the two distinct lines mentioned above. It is obvious that the principle of con centric circles is applicable to any rappor tor having the shape of a disc, for example like that represented in FIG. 4, or half a disc.
