Be it known that LrNUs G. READ, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Registers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in registering devices adapted to be operated, from time to time, in a way to register and indicate amounts and totals in figures, so as to maintain a register of sales, purchases and stock on hand, or the like.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a quick, accurate and convenient device by means of which the number of gallons of gasoline or other commodities used in a motor vehicle or vessel, or for other purposes, can be readily and accurately registered; further to design a device in a convenient and practical form best adapted for attachment to the dash or other suitable location in motor vehicle or vessel. Itis a. still further and important object of the invention to provide a device of this class which will be simple in construction, cheap to manufacture, eflicient in use and much better adapted to its intended purpose than any other form of device of the same class with which I am familiar.
This device when employed in the manner intended enables a motorist to keep a register of gasoline, oil, etc, purchased from time to time, in a manner to better enable him to check up with the speedometer and thus determine the number of miles per gallon of gasoline. 3
The device is further designed and constructed to be attractive in appearance, easy of attachment to the dash or any other part of a motor vehicle or vessel. It is constructed so as to be waterproof and sufficiently indestructible for all practical purposes. It will be further obvious that its use may be indefinitely extended and can be employed for domestic purposes for keeping a register of ice, milk or other daily purchases or any other standard merchandise handled in uniform quantities or packages.
With these and other objects in view the invention resides and consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying V vention.

As will be noted, the device is preferably designed to be made from sheet metal, though the frame, which is shown as made of the two sheet metal parts, may be formed of part metal if desired.
Referring in detail to the characters of reference marked upon the drawings, 5 represents the base plate forming the back of the counter frame and which as will. be noted includes a centrally struck in huh portion 6 in which a short rotatable shaft 7 is mounted. A knurled handle 8 is secured on the front end of this shaft by means of which the disk 9, secured thereto by pin 10 is rotated. This disk is more ole-surly shown in Fig. l and will be seen is provided with a circular series of numbers in hundreds, ranging from one hundred to five thousand and decimal fraction thereof; any number can be used.
The frame of the counter further includes a specially shaped sheet metal dish-like member 11 including an annular flange 1.2 secured to the annular edge portion of the before mentioned base plate 5 and an annular shoulder 12, forming a pocket in the frame as between the two said portions 5 and 11. The face of the disk 11 is provided with a hole 13 through which the numbers on the disk 9 are read as the said disk 9 is turned by the rotation of the handle 8.
A fixed member let which is in the form of an annular rim and including an outwardly disposed annular flange 1% is atlached to the above mentioned flange 12 on the disk 11 in any suitable manner. This rim member includes an inwardly disposed annular flange 16 which is spaced apart from the outer face of the member 11 and the shoulder 19f so as to form an annular guide under which the dial carrying ring 17 is mounted.
The before mentioned disk 9, operated by the handle 8, is employed for counting hundreds, while the annular dial is used for counting units, and decimal fractions thereof, from 1 to 100, as is clearly indicated in Fig. 1. This annular graduated dial 18 is preferably formed upon the annular face of the ring 17 and is directly covered by the glass plate 19 which also covers the before mentioned dial face 18 of the disk 11 and the opening 18 in the frame. The glass plate 19 is secured to the ring by means of an annular plate which is clamped against said dial and ring by means of the screws 21. The peripheral surfaces of this ring and plate are preferably knurled as at 22 so as to facilitate its rotation in the an nular pocket formed between the annular shouldered portion 12 of the frame member 11 and the annular flange 1.4. This combined circular member including the glass dial is rotated and the numbers carried thereby, and read in conjunction with the pointer 23 fixed to the top side of the rim 14. as is clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. From this it will be seen that the annular dial 18 including the circular series may be operated from time to time, to bring forward any number on said dial to register with the pointer 23, thus registering a definite amount.
Each complete rotation of the dial 18, accomplished by turning it from time to time, represents 100, thereupon the inner dial is given fraction of a turn so as to register each one hundred. These operations are obviously repeated from time to time in a manner to register any desired amount.
As before suggested, the counter is adapted to be put on the dash of an automobile or may be attached to the side wall of a room or building, said attachment being preferably made by means of screws as shown mounted in the circular riin portion of the counter. It will also of course be obvious that the device can be contained in a suitable box or case and carried in the pocket if desired.
The two dials are operated independently, but are necessarily used in conjunction with each other in order to count the required large amounts which may be carried on th dial.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A register of the character described. comprising a base plate having a centrally struck-in hub, a shaft mounted in said hub and having a handle, a dish-shaped member secured to said base plate and hav ing an opening allowing passage of said shaft, the dish-shaped member having a centrally arranged recess adjacent said base plate and an annular recess at its outer side surrounding said recess, a dial fixed to said shaft and arranged in said recess adjacent said hub, said dial having a series of numerals arranged adjacent the margin thereof and said dish-shaped member having a single opening whereby said numerals are adapted to be exposed opposite said has.- plate, an annular dial rotatably mounted in said annular recess and having a second series of numerals thereon adapted to be posed adjacent said before mentioned numerals, and means comprising an annular rim secured to said base plate and having an annular flange engaging a portion of said annular dial for holding said dial in said annular recess,
